Kinangop, Kenya: The 19-year-old boy shot dead during last week’s demonstration against the 61mw Kinangop Wind Park, was among thousands of candidates waiting for their KCSE results.

However, for Peter Kamau Maina’s family, yesterday’s release of the 2014 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education results by Education Cabinet Secretary Prof Jacob Kaimenyi meant nothing for it was the day his remains were interred.

It was an emotional send off for the young man at his parents’ home in Magunu, Kinangop in a service attended by Deputy Governor Waithaka Mwangi, Naivasha East MCA Samuel Waithuki and tens of area residents.

HUGE LOSS

The leaders called for justice and arrest of police behind the killing with Mr Waithuki saying Kamau’s death is a loss not only to the family but also to the community.

“It is painful and sad that the day Kamau was supposed to receive his KCSE results is the same day he is being buried,” he said.

Waithuki called for sobriety and understanding over the wind park issue saying forcing the Sh13 billion project on locals is not the solution.

Meanwhile, the Government has now formed a committee to address grievances raised by farmers who are opposed to the wind power project.

The committee will also address compensation of a family whose house was burnt during recent demonstration and look at the arrest of eight youths from the constituency.

Legal Executive George Kimani, who is a member of this committee, said the team was elected following last week’s meeting in Olkalau over the project.

Speaking at Engineer law courts, Kimani said they have applied to have the Sh100,000 bond imposed on the eight suspects in custody reduced.

OUR MANDATE

“One of the mandates given to us was to address the issue of bond for the eight suspects and I have just made that application in the court,” he said.

He said the Government, through the Ministry of Energy, donated Sh100,000 towards Kamau’s burial.
