KeNHA invites bids to expand key Coast roads

Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has invited bids for the design of Port Reitz Road and Moi International Airport Road aimed at decongesting the two link roads.

The estimated cost of improvements on the two roads including the construction of grade separated junctions is Sh30 billion. This comes after the Government early this month received financing of Sh1.8 billion from TradeMark East Africa to be used to underwrite part of the design and construction of the Port Reitz and Moi International Airport access roads in Mombasa County.

Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich, said the Government, through KeNHA — the agency implementing the project will inject a further Sh900 million to cater for additional costs. “TradeMark East Africa has further agreed to provide Sh2.7 billion to support the Mombasa port infrastructure facilities improvement, aimed at reducing transit time for cargo at the port by two days,” said Rotich said recently.

KeNHA wants eligible consultancy engineering firms to bid for the design works. The reconstruction of the road will ease movement of traffic to the Moi International Airport, which is currently a nightmare for motorists. “The works to be undertaken are located along the existing Port Reitz and Moi International Airport road within Mombasa County over a distance of 6.4km,” said the notice issued by the road agency Friday.

The roads are to be upgraded from a single carriage way to dual carriageway with grade separated junctions at the Magongo and Port Reitz Road junction.

The Moi International Airport Road is the only access to the airport - critical in transportation of passengers and goods to airport hub while the Port Reitz Road links the yet to be completed Port of Mombasa to the Northern Corridor that connects East and Central Africa existing roads.
