On view now at the Lehmann Maupin Gallery, are new works by the multimedia artist Tony Oursler. The exhibition is composed of a collection of large-scale sculptural works that depict human faces on aluminum panels. Their skin is marked by the recognizable indicators used in surveillance and facial recognition technology. Through holes in the surface, digital screens project looping images of eyes and mouths that continuously shift their expression.
Using all of the visual queues given by Oursler, the gallery visitor can piece together an idea of the who these characters might be. This raises questions about our loss of privacy in the face of new technology and the way that we formulate our identity when under such scrutiny.
The exhibition is running from April 29 – June 14, 2015 at 201 Chrystie Street.
