What is OutdoorFest?

What if we lived in a city where outdoor adventure was a daily part of our lives?

At OutdoorFest we believe that people can both live in New York City and maintain an active, adventurous lifestyle.

OutdoorFest is a ten day from citywide festival celebrating outdoor enthusiasts in all five NYC boroughs through community led events. We're building a robust schedule of outdoor events from kayaking, surfing, mountain biking, trail running, climbing and more in every borough from May 30th to June 8th 2014.

We want you to know where to go and have an amazing network of people to surf, trail run, climb, and kayak with. And more than that, we want NYC to be a place that inspires active, outdoor adventure. OutdoorFest is about reshaping the way we view our city lives by educating on the accessibility of the outdoors

Together we can shape the future of the outdoor community in New York City.

Join us and live in the city, love the outdoors.

What will we use the funds for?

More events.

Plain and simple: the more capital we can raise, the more events we can organize. Your pledge means OutdoorFest can grow and include even more people in our community.

Scheduling.

We know you're busy New Yorkers so we want to make sure you can connect with the events easily and fit OutdoorFest into your daily schedule. That’s why we’re planning on investing in a robust scheduling platform. You’ll be able to save the events you’re planning on going to on a personal calendar, easily see updates, and quickly find the location. That means maximum adventuring daily within the five boroughs.

America.

It’s not exciting but it’s reality: an insurance policy & legal fees are expensive. As we work to make sure we always keep you safe, we have to make sure that we’re safe as well. In the litigious world we live – a good insurance policy with sound legal advice is a must.

Parks.

And since we’re on the topic of fun legal things: Permits! Yes, we do have to get permits for some of the events (especially the ones in the parks). We think it’s a worthwhile investment because it means we get to be outside, playing in our beautiful public spaces. Think about it this way – the money is going to NYC Parks, not a bad thing to support. The more money we raise the more permits we can get - helping to physically spread the festival farther and wider!

What can you get? (these are not the "sale" prices - check those out to the right)

Who is Behind OutdoorFest?

Check out our full team (with profiles) here. Below is a recent article written by Founder, Sarah L. Knapp, and originally posted here

The Why

I moved out to Utah for the snow – and good lord there was a lot of it. But after a few months of adrenaline, I realized I was missing something. That out there in the mountains I was connecting with a part of myself but not my whole self. So I returned to New York City, and found the energy, diversity, the artists and the ambitions that I so sorely missed. There’s nowhere like New York City and for every time we complain about the subways and garbage smells, there’s another time we had to stop, stand, and just listen to someone amazing sing or we felt inspired on a Wednesday at 3:00PM to change the world.

New York City has a terrible reputation in skibum-dom – it’s like we’re a land of demons, a place souls go to die, a mecca for the “man.” But it’s not. In New York, there are thousands of outdoor enthusiasts who use our city both as a base camp for great exploration and as a playground for local adventure. Here, we have one of the highest concentrations of outdoor enthusiasts in the world and vibrant communities of surfers, climbers, ultra runners, kayakers, slackliners and more.

Yet, it is undeniably difficult to connect with these communities. Many of our friends are not interested in the outdoors and the mainstream culture isn’t focused on our sports. What if there was a way to advocate for and strengthen the outdoor community at the same time?

I started OutdoorFest because I believe there is. I believe that the resources, the people, and the passion are already here. We don’t have to create anything new, but rather build a way to bring everything that exists together. My hope is that OutdoorFest can serve the community with information, inspiration and actual experiences that connect people to the outdoors.

Maybe we can’t get outside everyday but we can surely skip brunch on a Saturday and head to the woods. OutdoorFest is about reshaping the way we view our city lives through educating on the accessibility of the outdoors. We are here in New York City for so many reasons and we love it. We are also outdoor enthusiasts. We know that we can live in a city and still make the outdoors part of our lives.

Live in the city, love the outdoors.
