Gilgil, Kenya: One person died and scores of others were injured along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway in two different accidents.

This came as traffic police heightened their crackdown on defective vehicles along the major highway following an increase in number of accidents.

Incidentally, both accidents occurred in Gilgil town and involved a total of six vehicles that included three personal vehicles.

In the first incident, a driver of a personal car died on the spot after he rammed into the rear of a lorry.

The driver was heading to Naivasha from Nakuru when he hit the lorry near Site estate at around 5am.

Gilgil OCPD Serah Koki confirmed the incident adding that no one was injured in the trailer.

She blamed high speed for the accident and called on motorists to be careful while using the highway.

“We are calling on drivers to exercise caution on the roads as this is one of leading causes of accidents,” she said.

And in the second accident, scores of people were injured and rushed to various hospitals in Gilgil following an accident involving four vehicles.

According to a witness, three of the vehicles were heading in the same direction while the fourth one was traveling in the opposite direction when the accident occurred.

“The three vehicles were heading towards Naivasha when the on the lead braked leading to a pile up,” said the witness.

The area police boss said those injured were treated in various hospitals and discharged.

“The mangled wrecks have been towed to Gilgil police station and we have heightened our crackdowns,” she said.
