THAT’LL teach those people who roll up late. What an unexpected pleasure: a solo slot from Clive Gregson, US-based Mancunian, writer of great songs, superb guitarist and genial wit.

Gregson sang songs old and new, starting with My Kind Of Girl, from his latest album, and including such old favourites (to some of us, at least) as I Love This Town.

If Gregson was a surprise, nothing about Jools and co was a surprise, but only in a good sense.

Those who attend these affairs know the ropes: great big-band tunes, a dash of serious jazz, lots of boogie-woogie, with sprightly banter from our host at the keyboards (soon divested of jacket and with braces left dangling, but he did ask our permission).

Sometimes these concerts take a while to ignite and only hit the heady sweet spot after Ruby Turner roars in for her soulful turn. The pace was up from the start this time. After some lovely and lively playing and soloing from members of the band, it was time for the traditional guest, a Jools trick which always adds chemistry.

And Marc Almond certainly brought his chemistry set along, starting with Say Hello Wave Goodbye (and pretending he couldn’t remember the words) and including an unavoidable but very engaging Tainted Love.

After that, the ever-fantastic Ruby brought everyone back to their feet, and in a blink or a wink, it was time for Enjoy Yourself (It’s Later Than You Think).
