IT Economic Trends in Portland....A quick update from my desk.... The Metro area job market continues to see growth and transformation within IT. Here are some key hiring trends amongst empoyers for 2024: ✔ Increased Demand for Cybersecurity Professionals: As companies prioritize data security and cloud migration, the demand for cybersecurity roles like Cybersecurity Managers, Cloud Security Engineers, and Network Security Engineers has surged. ✔ Cloud and AI-Driven Roles: With many businesses in Portland moving operations to the cloud, cloud security and data protection are becoming top priorities. Roles related to cloud technology and AI are also expected to expand, especially in cybersecurity. ✔ Talent Retention Challenges: Portland’s tech companies, particularly larger enterprises, struggle with retaining talent. A survey found that 58% of IT professionals were open to new opportunities. ✔ Upskilling and Competitive Compensation: To stay competitive, Portland companies are increasingly investing in upskilling opportunities for their employees, especially in small and medium-sized firms. If you've distilled all the challenges with this job market, down to "recruiters are cold and lack empathy" it's time for a head check. There are so many moving parts lending to the challenges right now. 🥨 Recruiters have been disproportionately impacted by layoffs. 🥨 Internal recruiter bandwidth is at an all time low. 🥨 Applicant volume is at an all time high. 🥨 New technologies (many very bad) are being introduced to the process (both sides.) Many of these are barely in Beta. 🥨 There is a plethora of mis and disinformation on this and other platforms. 🥨 There are people and industries benefiting from the state of the market exactly as it is right now. 🥨 Companies are leveraging layoffs to pad profits and stock value. 🥨 The economy is uncertain. 🥨 Supply / Demand in the job market is extremely out of balance If you consider all of that...and still chalk it all up to "recruiters are cold and lack empathy" I don't really know what to say. "We don't use staffing firms. Our internal TA team does all of our recruiting." Hiring Managers: 👉 How is that working for you? 👉 Has that proven to be a predictable model? For a sales hire, it costs a company +/- $2,739.72 every calendar day, or if you prefer, +/- $3,831.41 every business day to have an unworked 1M$ patch ...In unrealized revenues alone 💰 This does not account for the loss of commitment from reseller channels who shake hands with competitors during the lapse in coverage. Unsatisfied clients who do not have support and are now at risk of switching to another vendor. This also doesn't factor in potential loss of revenues elsewhere when other sellers need to divert attention to key or targeted accounts in the vacant patch. Timing is everything. Do the math. Using just the daily, direct loss number, if a headhunter charges 20% of a 100K base and shortens your search by just 7.5 calendar days, you have ROI. Thoughts?

A strong jobs report with lower unemployment is great news! Hello, this is Liz Anderson with the latest from Recruitonomics, an insights hub powered by Appcast.   This Week on Recruitonomics:   Is This September Report the October Surprise? This October surprise may be pulling from September, but we’ll allow it. The September jobs report was shockingly strong, with the labor market adding 254,000 net new jobs last month. That is far higher than the 150,000 net jobs expected from forecasters. Additionally, there were upward revisions to the July and August numbers, a reverse from what we’ve seen over the last several months. Along with the strong job growth, the unemployment rate ticked down to 4.1% for all the right reasons: Labor force participation increased and the number of unemployed people ticked down. This contributes to the near-perfect balance of supply and demand in the labor market. This report is a reversal of the slowing labor market that we saw over the summer, and it is possible that the slowing has now slowed: The labor market may have found its footing last month. This report could be a sort of October surprise, an event that changes the outlook of the November election. A strong report could be a boon for Harris, but we will have to wait to see how it shakes out in the polls.

“Transcribing the notes afterward is time-consuming. “Plenty of our recruiters say they block a specific day each week.” It’s true. And during busier seasons it’s easier to get behind on drafting the write-ups. The conversation surrounding AI and recruiting seems initially to have focused on automation of the workflow of the process itself; this article presents an opportunity to leverage AI in recruiter efficiency, a top factor to consider as a recruiter. ✨ My 5 months of Funemployment is over ✨ The truth is it wasn't all that fun. 2024 is a tough market to be unemployed. Sometimes you go through long periods of SILENCE waiting for responses and any kind of communication. I tracked my application submittals & referral opportunities on a spreadsheet. I'm at line 651. I networked and applied to jobs on a daily basis. Oftentimes with no response. For every open position there are a lot of applicants. That's assuming the job is real and they are actively hiring for it. The interview process is very competitive with everyone on the market (often through no choice of their own). There are typically many rounds of interviews where you have to be patient throughout the process waiting for any feedback and/or next steps. Don't even get me started on applying for jobs using Workday, ADP, Paylocity or Taleo. *shudders* Shout out to Lever, Greenhouse Software and Ashby for providing simple, quick and straightforward application processes. With that said I interviewed with some fantastic companies.
