Earlier this week, I brought my fully remote, distributed team together in Napa for a two-day offsite, where I intentionally stepped away from the typical planning and strategy sessions. Instead, I created space for us to simply connect.🙌 The days were mostly unstructured—a welcome break from the daily grind. We shared great meals, stories, and laughter—lots of it.🤣 Here’s what I walked away with: ✅ Immense gratitude for each person I work with. ✅ Confidence that those two days were time well spent. I truly believe that the supportive, psychologically safe environment we’ve built as a team is a direct result of the time we’ve dedicated to getting to know each other, understanding one another better, and prioritizing playfulness and fun. Too often, leaders underestimate the value of this type of connection, dismissing it as "fluff" or making minimal efforts, treating it as an afterthought. Yesterday was another Adobe Well- Being Day Off and I took the time to set in my garden and read one of my favorite publications Harvard Business Review’s article “Reimagine Work as a Product”. It was very interesting to reframe and challenge the Employee Experience. I am reposting Allison Vendt ‘s post because of her work at Dropbox in People Operations operationalizing the articles principles. Where by the way one of my favorite leaders of all time Eric Cox works now. So I am curious Dear LinkedIn Community about your answers to the following: - What do you do or where do you go or how do you step back and get a new approach - a reframe to your work? - if you did create your employee experiences like a product - what do you imagine would be different? - what are ways that you are innovating in the space of employee innovation, growth or success? Now that Amazon has effectively ended hybrid work, it’s only a matter of time before other companies follow suit. Yet, no one seems willing to address why so many people prefer a hybrid schedule. For starters, the office setup itself isn’t ideal. There aren't enough conference rooms, and when there are, they're often too small to fit everyone. This leads to awkward meetings where half the attendees are in the room and the other half are on video, sometimes from the same building. Open floor plans? They’re loud and distracting, not exactly fostering collaboration when teams aren’t even seated together. And with no assigned seating, I could end up next to random people each day, lugging around my keyboard, mouse, and whatever else I need to work efficiently. Then there’s commuting. Anyone who has commuted into NYC from NJ knows it’s a slog—whether you’re driving or taking NJ Transit. Ever tried catching a train during summer? Good luck. And let’s not even talk about the nightmare that is the Port Authority Bus Terminal. As Joe puts it, quoting Atlassian’s Annie Dean: “For whatever reason, we keep making where we work the lightning rod, when how we work is the thing that is in crisis.” Joe sums it up nicley with this "As Annie Dean at Atlassian puts it, "For whatever reason, we keep making where we work the lightning rod, when how we work is the thing that is in crisis".
