How is TypePad different from existing weblog services?

In addition to not requiring any setup or installation other than a simple online signup, TypePad is distinct from existing weblog services because it was designed to include all of the elements that make up a weblog today. We've had the advantage of starting from a thorough knowledge of publishing weblogs, and we have worked from that point to create a weblog publishing system that works the way bloggers do.

Is TypePad just hosted Movable Type?

TypePad was built upon the reliable, tested Movable Type platform, but it includes new functionality that is not in Movable Type. Most importantly, we rebuilt the entire interface from scratch to be simpler, faster, cleaner and more powerful. Then we added in huge new features like photo albums and statistics tracking right in the application itself, and integrated it with built-in hosting with plenty of space for your weblog entries, photos, and the flexible archives Movable Type users have grown accustomed to.

Will there be a free version of TypePad?

Not right away. The number one request we had from users was to make it easy to start up a full-featured weblog with all of the power of Movable Type. The second most popular request was to make a hosted service that's reliable, with servers and features that you could count on for your website. To do this right, we wanted to make sure that we built a system that was designed around users who cared about having a quality weblog, and that means that we have to charge a little bit for it. We know you're interested in specific prices, and we'll let you know them as soon as we have firm numbers. But don't worry, we don't expect the basic level of the service to cost more than a monthly trip or two to the coffee shop. And it means your TypePad site won't be cluttered up with ads.

What is TypePad's audience? Will it be right for me?

TypePad will be released in three tiers, appropriate for a broad range of skill levels. The basic tier will be simple enough for someone who's brand-new to the Internet and weblogs to begin publishing in a few minutes. But TypePad's features range all the way to the highest tier, which will be appropriate for advanced users who want things like multiple weblogs, multiple photo albums, and the ability to control every single character on their web pages.

If you're interested in a system where you can modify the code to suit your needs, Movable Type is still the right choice for you, but most users without some programming or scripting experience will be very happy with TypePad.

A good indicator of TypePad's appeal is that we're all hooked on the service and its simplicity just from having used it in our internal testing.

Why should I sign up for the TypePad notification list?

In addition to being the first to find out information on the upcoming TypePad service, members of the Announcements list will have access to exclusive information like the beta registration form where you can qualify to participate in the limited beta testing of TypePad. Beta testers will get a discount on the final service once it's available, so if you sign up for the Announcements list and are chosen for the beta, you might even save a couple of bucks.
