    This thesis delves into the prevalence of traumatic fractures found in the skeletal population of the New York African Burial Ground. It draws upon the history of the time period (circa 18th century, Revolutionary War) in order to explain the scientific findings, based on a hypothesis that a prevalence of certain characteristics of fractures - ulnar (representing defensive wounds), cranial, perimortem, and multiple fractures - is indicative of interpersonal and social violence, perhaps because…

It draws upon the history of the time period (circa 18th century, Revolutionary War) in order to explain the scientific findings, based on a hypothesis that a prevalence of certain characteristics of fractures - ulnar (representing defensive wounds), cranial, perimortem, and multiple fractures - is indicative of interpersonal and social violence, perhaps because these individuals were soldiers for the British, as has been posited by the archaeologists.
