15,000 Points

Update 01/26/18: IHG have released a preview list of 30 properties (we have put their regular prices in brackets). It seems like the maximum discount is 15,000 points. Hat tip to Points With A Crew.

Original post (01/25/18): IHG will release a preview of the PointsBreak list tomorrow (26th), the full list will be available on Monday January 29th. IHG have also announced that not all hotels will be 5,000 points each. Instead they will have some hotels listed at 5,000, some at 10,000 and others at 15,000. You’ll also be able to do points and cash bookings for PointsBreaks.

I’m really not sure how to feel about this. My gut instinct is that this is nothing but bad news. That being said I think the quality of PointsBreak hotels has been rapidly decreasing and if this means we get access to more top tier/useful properties at a heavy discount I can see it being a positive change. They have provided this short preview list:

It’s nice to see three InterContinental properties in there but I’ll withhold my judgement until I see the full list.

Hat tip to Miles to Memories

Used to get a lot of value on weekend gateways with IHG 5K points per night.
But this time around In the entire Tri State area (NY NJ CT and even PA) the only hotel that offers free breakfast, free parking an indoor pool and hot tub is the IHE in Wilkes Barre East PA for 10K per night and the hotel is 150 Miles away from NYC.
But then there is a Hyatt in Fishkill NY for only 5K a night and has Free breakfast free parking a pool and a hot tub.

Question is: what is pricier 5K Hyatt points or 10K IHG points?

That’s what I see as well. When I switch dates to May 2018 the points price goes up.

How do you find out point break nights? I tried dozen different dates on one of your listed 5k point properties but all are showing 20k per night.

p.s. – Just checked on the IPG website. Their point break list is very different than OP’s. Not sure why.

Remember you can regularly buy points for 0.5 cents each through various promotions and cancelling reservations. With the 500 welcome points and the 10% refund on redemptions for IHG credit card holders, we’re talking about $20 rooms in obscure places. A 15,000 PB redemption is a $65 redemption which is a good deal if the hotel would normally charge $200 a night.

Point breaks were the redeeming characteristic of the IHG program. Not sure why would damage the one perk that made them competitive.

Are they really damaging it? Only time will tell. As long as they keep some of the crazy 5000 point hotels (which you can usually only use in obscure locations — maybe I average 2 nights a year), we’re all pretty much better off. The reality is that few of their properties seem worth their full redemption rate — there’s always a better deal on points at another hotel, or on some stacked promo at an independent hotel. I’d note that few of us have unlimited IHG points, because they’re difficult to “gin up” cheaply. So right now I average maybe 2 Pointbreak nights a year, 2 regular redemptions and my family’s free Chase anniversary nights. I’m betting I’ll easily do a couple more nights at the 10 and 15,000 point levels, as long as the properties are at least half off regular rates.

The HI downtown Helsinki was very often on the PB list for 5K. Now it’s on the PB list for 15,000K.

It’s safe to assume this is typical of the PB devaluation. Of course it would be nice if new properties started PB because of this.

They won’t. IHG still reimburses PB hotels the same amount. It’s additional IHG profit on 10K and 15K.

I will say this is a fail since a couple properties are notorious PB repeat offenders, but now all of a sudden 10 or 15k points. I don’t feel there’s any real reason to do seasonal promotions anymore, I guess I’ll stick to IHG card every 2 yrs now. Could’ve used Rochester circa 20 yrs ago when I was auditioning for Eastman….the CP Antalya actually is a great deal, but totally wrong season (glad I got it a couple summers ago)

Why IHG isn’t worried about the massive theft of points from having a 4-digit password; petty theft.

I’ve had great vacations on 5K’s at the Crowne Plaza Bogota, the downtown HIE Hamburg, and the HI San Clemente. That was a couple years ago. Lately the pickings were much worse.

Hopefully the higher-priced hotels will show up for 15K sometimes and it won’t just devolve into 20K hotels listing for 15K.

Yeah, LastPass security check screams at me for having a totally insecure password at ihg.com.. I’d use a better one if I could.

This can be a good thing. If a property that normally goes for 30,000 or 35,000 points per night goes on sale for 15,000 points a night, that would not have been offered at the 5,000 level, then that’s a win. I’m guessing properties that are normally at the 10k and 15k levels will be 5k point breaks still. Don’t everybody panic and call this a terrible devaluation.

That sounds good until you remember that the 30K and 35K properties were probably 20k and 25K properties within the last two years.
