In the Wake of Wanting

Rate this book
Even before the second semester of his sophomore year at Columbia began, Trey Holland knew his life would be completely different by the end of it. He had yet to meet the pretty–yet flustered–freshman who he’d be mentoring on the school paper. He had yet to discover the despicable secrets his new best friend was hiding.

All Trey knew at the time was that the relationship with his high school sweetheart was nearing its end.

In those days before the spring semester began, life for Trey was simple. School was a place to learn. His fraternity was a community of like-minded brothers. Life was full of well-intentioned people. Complications were tiny bumps in the road, easily smoothed over, leaving no trace behind.

In a matter of weeks, Trey is thrust into a jaded reality brought on by choices he makes and by the vile actions of those around him. It won’t take long for him to look back and see the wreckage left in the wake of wanting.

AUTHOR'S NOTE: Portions of this book deal with the sensitive subject of rape and sexual abuse. While the incidents are not 'experienced' first hand, they are retold in hindsight by characters. The descriptions of the events are brief, and while they are not graphic, they may be considered disturbing to some.

This is my first book read by this author and I truly did like her writing style. This story is told in the all-male pov of Trey Holland. The Hollands are somewhat considered NYC royalty. Not reading any of the prior books by this author didn’t hinder my reading enjoyment as this seems to be the standalone story of a son of a former hero and heroine.

Trey Holland is a bit of a local celebrity in town as he attends Columbia University, swims for their team, and writes for his school’s newspaper. He’s been in a committed four year relationship with Zaina Mishra. Zaina and Trey have been struggling with their relationship as it has turned into a long distance one and sadly becoming boring on his end.

When a freshman writer on the college’s paper gets assigned to Trey for guidance, Trey tries to resist the instant attraction and connection with Coley.

”She makes every other woman look indistinct and lifeless.”

Slowly Trey and Coley get to know one another as he is her mentor on the paper and they connect over their love of writing, swimming, and physical attraction. Trey doesn’t cross any lines and does end things with Zaina (which was brutal).

”There’s no easy way out of this. There shouldn’t be an easy way out of a four-year relationship.”

description

The author warns that the subject of rape is addressed in this story though it’s not a first-hand account. The rapist causes all sorts of trouble for Trey, Coley, and other female students. Though this is an aspect of the story it’s not the main driving force. Trey and Coley’s fall into love from the first encounter to the last page is where the author did nail every last butterfly.

”Let’s get lost in this.”

Overall, this story was a solid well written read that tended to be on the long side for this reader. There isn’t any cheating involved in this story as the hero ends things well before they go on their first date even though the feelings are well past that step. The author did a solid job writing in Trey’s pov and I’ll be interested to see what her priors stories are like in my future.

”Because love.”

New cover... yeah, it's a woman's prerogative to change her mind. That's what they say, right? This is one of the great perks of being an Indie author. I can change the cover however many times I want before publication. LOL.

This book hooked me from pretty early on. I just love this author's story telling and the beautiful characters she creates. Love the man Trey Holland has become, his vision of life and the way he loves. I felt connected to the heroine, Coley very quickly. She is such an interesting character and I love how passionate she is about the things she loves and the people she loves. Their love story is simply beautiful. In the Wake of Wanting besides being a beautiful love story full of romance with all the feels it's also a book that carries a very important message not only to our youth but to parents. I was very touched of the way the author carried this message through to her readers and it is something I won't ever forget.
Everything about this book is a winner in my eyes; strong characters that connect and develop with so much chemistry, a plot that captured me from beginning to end, and sublime writing to pull it all through.
This has become of one of favorite books by Lori Otto and definitely is going straight to my list of Top Reads of 2016.

For years now, I’ve been reading fiction from a variety of genres, and Lori Otto has become one of my very favorite authors. She writes about family and friendship. Loyalty and love. Sometimes she writes about topics which are relevant to current events. Her newest novel, In the Wake of Wanting, embodies all of these characteristics and so much more.

Before I begin my review In the Wake of Wanting, it would be remiss of me to not share Otto’s author note:

“Portions of this book deal with the sensitive subject of rape and sexual abuse. While the incidents are not 'experienced' first hand, they are retold in hindsight by characters. The descriptions of the events are brief, and while they are not graphic, they may be considered disturbing to some.”

If you are sensitive to these subjects, please take Otto’s author note into consideration before you decide to read In the Wake of Wanting. Now onto the good stuff!

Raised as the son of New York City royalty, Trey Holland is a product of his upbringing. He’s polite. Giving. Kind. Loyal. Someone who puts others before him. Now a sophomore at Columbia University, Trey has recently noticed that his feelings for Zaina Mishra are changing. Trey feels suffocated – feels like his future has already been mapped out. He’s beginning to think his 4-year relationship with his high school sweetheart has run its course.

When Coley Fitzsimmons walks into Trey’s journalism class at Columbia University, he’s filled with awe and wonder. Not only is she beautiful, but Coley has been assigned as Trey’s journalism partner for the school newspaper, and she knows EXACTLY who he is. But Coley also catches the eye of Trey’s best friend, Asher Knoxland, the President of The Columbia Daily Witness. It’s a sticky situation for Trey to be in.....and one that will test his values.

In the Wake of Wanting has everything that I love to see in this genre! Although classified as a new adult novel, In the Wake of Wanting shows elements of romantic suspense. This is such a sweet love story – probably THE best Otto has ever written. Emotions that the characters are feeling just bleed off of the page. Otto gave me bouts of anxiety. I felt anger. Hurt. Fear. Complete shock. I was disturbed at times – so much so that I had a sick feeling. I felt sadness. Joy. And I even had butterflies in my stomach.

Trey and Coley are outstanding characters. Both primary characters are just so easy to love – and I fell in love with them! Their romance? Sweet and sexy. Otto had me from the moment Trey first set his eyes on beautiful Coley. In my opinion, Lori Otto writes best from a male point of view, and In the Wake of Wanting is narrated from Trey’s first-person perspective. Character dialogue is probably the greatest strength of this story because it beautifully conveys the emotions that I spoke of earlier.

Those who follow Lori Otto will already be familiar with Trey’s background, but I feel Otto did a pretty good job of sharing pertinent information about Trey and the Holland family with readers who might be interested in reading this as a standalone novel. To sum things up, In the Wake of Wanting is timely, educational and powerful. It’s a story of survival and fighting back. And it’s one of the sweetest love stories that I’ve read in a long time. You definitely won’t want to miss reading this 5-star novel – In the Wake of Wanting is one my 2016 favorites!

This book is not part of a series and can be read as a standalone, but know that it involves characters from books previously written by Lori. If you're familiar with her books, you already know Trey, so there's a huge chance that you already love him.

By now, you've probably realized I have this soft spot for Lori's books. I've read most of them and I have to say, I've loved them all. She knows how to write a book. Anyone who's read anything by her must realize that, because her books are so incredibly everything, I mean, I know that's not an adjective, but they're just so good and they just make you feel like you're part of the story and she just doesn't leave anything out. Everything is detailed perfectly and you just can't get enough. You're never lost and you'r always captivated by the story.

In this book we get to see (or meet, for those who haven't) Trey Holland, son of Jack Holland and Emi Hennigan. I have to say, I first went into this book thinking I could not see Trey as anything other that this sweet little kid. I first met him in Lori's previous books, when he was barely a kid, playing all day and being sweet and cute as hell. He's always been good. It's as if goodness flowed in his veins rather than blood, so reading this book allowed me to see a completely new side of him, one I never thought I'd get to see. Which was good. Really, really good. He's not that little kid anymore, nope, he is not.

"With passion and heat... and a little mystery. Utterly unbridled. Not rough, but definitely rash. And out of control."

Some of the characters involved in this story I've already met and fallen in love with, so seeing them again is like seeing an old but great friend, after so long. It's comforting, knowing how their lives turned out to be <3 It fills my heart with happiness. Now, the new characters that appeared here... well, some are now part of this huge family that Lori has created, one that will always stay with me, and some... Well, it's better if I don't ever think about them.

First things first. Coley. What a great girl. Oh my god. I don't think there's a better match for Trey, even though their timing SUCKS SNOW CONES. She's the very opposite of Zaina, Trey's long over-due sweetheart. When one is clingy and annoying, the other one is understanding and just plain cool. So, meeting Coley gave us the opportunity to see Trey in this whole new form. She transformed, or better yet, allowed the real Trey to come out, and be happy with himself. Coley is completely genuine and true to herself. She's comprehensive and loyal and caring but most importantly, she challenges him. She lets him be himself and encourages him to explore new things. She's everything Trey needs.

You want to know what I liked the most about this book? The struggle Trey had to endure. He had this inner war between his heart and his mind. He had to fight urges to do what felt right for him, but knew wasn't right for others. That's Trey though. He's always put everyones feelings into account. It doesn't mean he does nothing for his feelings, but he knows how to be patient and wait for his time. Being good is all his ever known. We're always reading about the bad boy redeeming himself, but never, or almost never, the good guy doing something not so good, we never see the good guy having this inner war with his feelings. Should he stay with one girl and be unhappy? Or should he walk away, be happy and break one girl's heart? This book shows us a rebellious, more adventurer side of Trey. And let me tell you, it's far more interesting this way.

Zaina can suck it.

Now, the story... Well, I wasn't expecting it to turn out this way. I mean, I think I went into this book partially blind, because I actually didn't see somethings coming and the way it is told... It brings up subjects that are completely real and, I can't say for sure that that's how it usually is, because thank god I haven't been in that position, but it felt completely real. The heartache, the sadness of the entire situation and even the helplessness at some points. We live in a world where people do bad things to other people. Innocent people. Just for the fun of it, like, it doesn't matter, the hurt it can cause. So, this might pop people's bubble about how things are usually handled, and how they should be. It's not like it's extremely graphic or anything, but the way it was told, the details a, it felt realistic enough and kept loyal to the situation nd talked about the importance of it, the gravity of it, while being respectful.

Guys. Please read this book. Read all of Lori's books, I promise, you're in for a journey of yes, I'm not going to lie, some heartache and sadness, but there's also so much happiness and the deepest of loves.

The stories you hear on the news or online, especially in today's society where things go viral and spread fast, is cruel. From campus rape to rumors and slut shaming and name calling behind computers, it's everywhere.
In the Wake of Wanting tackles such subject matters. Even though it's a work of fiction, it is so relevant and real in today's society. The author takes on this subject matter with such honesty, heart, compassion and really gets you to put yourself in other people's shoes, be less judgmental, and have faith that while there is evil and bad out there, there is also good even though the focus tends to be on all the hate. It also serves as a reminder to victims that they are truly victims and never ask or deserve things upon them and they are not alone.
Amongst the heaviness of this, is a love story of Trey and Coley. Trey is a shining example of what a real man is and that there is good people in this world. Coley is also an example of strength and overcoming, as we can see something that happens to her and the emotional turmoil this causes as well as events that happen to other people and its effects on both of them. This book is another beautiful masterpiece by the author that always leaves me thinking, relating and applying them to my own life experiences. I truly feel educated and captivated at the same time and urge you to pick this one up.

In The Wake of Wanting is yet another powerful read by Lori Otto. The story unfolds during Trey Holland's second year at Columbia University. He is attempting a long distance relationship with his high school love. And realizing while he loves her, he no longer is in love with her. Enter...Coley Fitzsimmons, a fellow class mate in a journalism class with Trey. The attraction is instant. Their chemistry is off the charts!! This is a wonderful love story filled with passion, romance and tenderness. You will experience several other emotions as the story does include very relevant and sensitive subject matter. Otto's description of these events is very real and could be a trigger for some in which their lives have been touched by rape. While the telling of the events was perfectly incorporated into the storyline, it will stir every emotion you possess. I felt a strong connection with the story that I believe is attributed to the immense loyalty, love, caring and respect we see exhibited amongst the characters. I loved reading snippets from other members of the Holland clan as well as the humor mixed in here and there. The poetry was an excellent and touching part to this story. You will enjoy this 5-star read immensely.

I'm so happy every time I hear Lori L. Otto has a new book coming out. Her characters make you care about them. She is great at acchieving that feeling and I always feel like they are one of my friends.

I loved Trey! He is such a good man. Respectful, caring and thoughtful. I always appreciate people thinking before acting especially in those times you need to be rational. It's refreshing to see him being impulsive and discover a new side of him.

His love story is passionate and sweet. It is interesting to see someone young realizing love is not something black and white, there are so many shades and no one can tell you the answer.

There are a few other topics in this story about current events in today's world, I believe they were handled respectfully and they showed different aspects of those situations. The author touched such a difficult subject and made the reader involved in everything that went down.

The main characters developtment is amazing and beautifully done. I definitely recommend this book and you really need to read it!

Where do I even start? I sooo loved this book. Lori Otto's writing is like no other. Her words through her characters mesmerize me. I am there, in the moment through the whole story. You will love Trey Holland, and Coley Fitzsimmons will steal your heart.

If you haven't read anything by Lori Otto, you have no idea what you're missing. If you have read her books, this one is at the top of one of her best, yet.

This is one of the most timely, powerful book i have ever read so far. It is not for the weak of heart or for people who are too sensitive about this taboo topic. Nevertheless, Lori Otto delivered his message very well. I think i might have stopped a few pages at a time in between my reads and took me a while before i finally have the courage to finish this book - none the less I was pretty much in awe of the characters, of the plot and of the message the author is trying to tell his readers about this book. Must read!

When I started this book I wanted to punch Trey Holland in the face. Then I wanted to punch Zaina in the face for being a whiny baby. As it turns out I am incredibly proud of Trey and the decisions he made and why he made them. And Coley... what an amazingly strong woman character! Because Love

Once again, Lori Otto has broached a difficult, and important subject, that is gaining more and more attention in today's society: college rape. And while that isn't the whole story, it's a big part of the story.

Many of these characters we know, and a good few we meet for the first time in this book. As always, Lori makes it easy to slip inside the minds of her characters and feel what they're feeling. This is sometimes an emotionally difficult path to follow, but it's always worth it.

If you're a faithful reader of Lori's books, you will have watched Trey Holland (the good guy. Obviously.) grow up from a sometimes demanding but always cute toddler (if you are a VERY faithful reader, you've followed Trey's journey from before he was born), to a mostly straight-laced teen, and into a swoon worthy man, with a good heart and a good head, and a desire to tell important stories, honestly. He is just what you would expect from the son of Jacks Holland, and possibly a little more.

Trey's opposite, the bad guy, is perhaps the most odious character Lori has ever written. In a contest between Kiersten from Lost and Found and this guy? This guy would win. And if you know me at all, you know how I feel about Kiersten!

There are new characters you will love, and new characters you will loathe. There are situations you will relish, and situations which will make you cringe. You will laugh, and you will get angry. As always with Lori's books, this story will take you on an emotional ride, and you will come out of it feeling a little wrung out, and a lot joyful.

With Love Will, Lori gave us some spine-tingling lyrics. With In the Wake of Wanting we get some thought-provoking poetry. And, as with Love Like We Do, In the Wake of Wanting is an important social commentary on what is good and what is bad with the society we live in.

Lori approaches painful subjects without hesitation, without glossing over the horrible parts, but always manages to make us feel better and hopeful by the end of the book.

This is a poignant story about love, hate, hurt and healing. I would expect nothing less of Lori L. Otto. IT is truly WOW.

This was a really good read. I like that the author was going to write it a certain way then when she heard about the college rapist going free that she decided to write it a whole new story. It totally worked. If you don't know...this book is a story about college rape. So it's kind of graphic if you're sensitive to that stuff. Happy ending too. Also loved how the author put hotline numbers in case someone out there needs help. This was very well written. I'm glad I got to meet Lori at HWTB last year and got this book.

Wow. Just. Wow.

I bought this book originally because to be honest, I loved the cover. It was truly refreshing and just looked interesting to me. I read a little bit of the synopsis and it looked intriguing.

What this book was was so much more than intriguing. I think from the very first few words of the beginning paragraph I was so hooked and couldn't seem to put it down. There's a lot of pages in this book, more than I'm used to reading at least and I read it in a little over a day being home sick I could truly concentrate on this beautiful love story unfolding between Trey Holland and Coley Fitzsimmons.

**

With this there is an underlying story of rape intermingled into this story. Not directly with these two characters, but it plays an enormous part of the entire story as how love truly conquers evil.

Wow. That's the first word that comes to mind after finishing this book! I am always amazed at Lori's stories, the eloquentness of them, the simple beauty written within the pages, the way she can tell such an epic love story that will stay with you long after the last page. While this story is a love story, there is also a darker side to this.

A situation one of our beloved character has to face, not only the violent crimes committed against some of his friends, but also the war within his heart. If you have read Lori's other stories (which, btw, I think you should *wink*), you have already met and loved Trey. If you haven't read her other works, (don't worry this can be read as a standalone if you wish), you will met Trey as a sophomore in college. And in a long distance relationship with his girlfriend of four years, Zaina. They met when Trey was 15 and were high school sweethearts. But things have seemed to be falling apart, even before Trey meets Coley, a quirky, sweet freshmen that he is assigned to work with on the school paper.

***“Everything okay at your pad?”
“It’ll be fine. Hopefully the smoke smell will be gone by the time I get home tonight.”
“And with your girl?”
I shrug my shoulders. “About as suffocating.”
“You’ve got to get out of that.”
“No,” I say. “I just need some time away.”
He looks at me funny. “Did you hear what you just said? You need some time away from the girl you’ve spent most of the last year and a half apart from. You had three weeks with her over the break?”

When you feel that way about your girl, it's time to seriously rethink your relationship. And that is what Trey does. He decides that it is time to end things with her. And she doesn't really take it all that well. That's to be expected. But the truth is, Trey was meant to be with Coley. His family and friends really love Zai, and he thinks they will be disappointed in him, but he knows he must follow his heart, and his heart is pulling him toward Coley.

It was great to watch their friendship grow into something beautiful, something that was meant to be.

**“Because love.”

*** “What I feel for you is visceral, Coley. It’s so deep-rooted in me that I feel like I was born to love you."

Coley is a poet, and seeing her talent unfold is something I really enjoyed! Lori really has a way with words, and her poems through Coley are amazing!

These two characters are so well written that you can't help but fall in love right along with them and root for them when the odds seem stacked against them. Through all that they have to go through and all that they struggle to come out of, this is definitely a story I won't soon forget.

The subject of rape is in this book, but like the authors warning, it is not told first hand, but through the voice of the victims in the story. It's hurtful, and can be hard for some readers. I think that Lori did an excellent job of the retelling of their stories and for getting justice for the victims.

5 "Because Love" Stars!!!!
In the Wake of Wanting is one of my most favorite reads of 2017 and another special favorite by Author Lori L. Otto that is now added right next to every book that I've read by her, with each and every one being a special favorite that I will always love and never forget!!!
This book can most definitely be read as a standalone and for anyone wanting to try a book by this amazing author this one would be ideal to start with. But as I've read from the beginning of the Hollands family I would sooooo recommend starting with the Emi Lost and Found series to allow yourself the most special connection to Trey Holland and all the characters.

I've loved watching (reading) the growth of Trey from arriving as the miracle that Jack and Emi Holland so deserved to the little brother of Livvy and best friend to Max, through teenage love and relationships and becoming the wonderful young man that I knew he was destined to be.
The feelings and emotions that came over Trey with meeting and getting to know Coley Fitzsimmons were so instant and strong and oh-so-undeniably-electric, and while it was beautiful to see him discovering real true love that just took him over completely it was also heartbreaking to see him struggle with breaking the heart of his long time girlfriend to fulfill his own hearts needs. But Trey learns through his hearts constant pull towards Coley that to be truly happy, for him to grow and move forward he must let go of a relationship that has been dying for a while. And Coley's energy and light could be felt so deeply, I just loved her and how she was star struck by Trey but at the same time saw him for who he really is and wanted to know him beyond the good looks and social status, she wanted to know his heart. The young beautiful love blossoming between Trey and Coley had me smiling and my heart floating with them!!

There's a lot MORE (please read authors note) within this book besides the love story of Trey and Coley, and that MORE is very tragic and heartbreaking, affecting Trey and Coley and their family, friends, and classmates very deeply and is very important to the complete story and I feel that "MORE" is sadly very much happening somewhere to someone every day.

Another 5 Star Favorite and I CAN NOT WAIT for the next book by Lori L. Otto!!!!

In true Lori L. Otto fashion, I am left in love and in awe. I have fallen in love with Trey and Coley and felt every shred of emotion known to man while reading the masterpiece that is In the Wake of Wanting

This book explores many facets of humanity. It is not unrealistic in the sense that these things that occur within the pages of the story do occur in real life. Every emotion was tangible as I turned page after page. We once again see characters we love, but this doesn't deter from the story at all. Everyone has a purpose in this story.

The writing flows effortlessly in a poetic and fluid way. One of my favorite quotes summarizes just how this book makes you feel

"If I inhale, I'm afraid these charged particles will escape my lungs and seep out into my bloodstream and begin to affect my heart. Already my pulse feels like it's being controlled by a drummer on a cocaine binge."

And can we talk about how HOT some of the love scenes were?! Holy cow!

"The respiring starts off as deep breaths coming from two separate bodies functioning from autonomously, but soon merges into one united being, gasping at the same time, fighting for the same air as the kiss takes on a life of its own."

There is a very important message within the pages of this book. It's something that everyone should read. It's something everyone should strive to do. There are not enough words to express how I feel about this book. Just read it. I urge you to.

I love Lori L. Otto's books. She's seriously one of my favorite authors. She writes about family and friends. She writes about love, loyalty, and passion. Her books are realistic and relevant. These are the kinds of stories of love and life that I adore reading.

In the Wake of Wanting is all that I love from Lori and more. As per the author's note, it contains material pertaining to the sensitive subjects of rape and sexual abuse. Inspired by real life events, Lori handles the story line with delicacy and finesse. I don't think anyone else could have done a better job at telling a story such as this.

To those that have read other books by Lori will see plenty of familiar faces as all of her books are spin offs of the Emi Lost and Found series. To those that haven't read anything else by her, I certainly recommend her work. Whether it's starting with In the Wake of Wanting or going back to the Emi Lost and Found series, you won't be disappointed.

In the Wake of Wanting is a story of love and loyalty. It's a timely story of surviving and standing up for yourself. It's one of my favorites of 2016. You don't want to miss it.

I'm not going to lie - parts of this book were really hard to read. It took me a long time to get through it. But it was worth it. It was real. It was heartbreaking. It was sweet. In The Wake Of Wanting deals with difficult subject matter, in a way that is both eye-opening and refreshing.

I adored Trey and Coley. I loved their relationship and that although the "insta-love" thing was there, they didn't immediately act on it. I loved that although Trey was rich and famous, he didn't act like a spoiled rich kid. I liked the secondary characters (with the exception of one, whose name I don't even want to mention!).

This was my first Lori Otto book (I'm not sure how that happened!), but won't be my last! In 2017, I'll be going through the backlog of books on my kindle to find everything she's written!

I'm in such a book coma! Once again Ms Otto has crafted a brilliant book, showcasing her gifted ever-increasing Holland family. I love this family and am so happy to see an adult Trey. Interestingly, I was never totally team Zaid...so I was happy to see Trey with a new interest. They totally completed one another. As a forensic nurse, specializing in sexual assault, this book is a must read. It dealt with this and other sensitive issues brilliantly! Thanks for such a good read!!!

Each time I read a new book by Lori it makes an entry in my favorite books shelf.. This one was no exception. This book was not a quick read, just like Love Will, this book took me almost a week to read - it can't be rushed through, it has to be devoured, loved, lived in. Both Coley and Trey are such beautiful characters, so rich in their souls.. I loved each word of this unbelievably deep and wonderful story! Thank You, Lori, for giving the world Your amazing books!!

It took me a long time to finally get back into the Holland bubble and In the Wake of Wanting brought me back into the fold as if I never left. This extended story about Trey Holland is as angsty as ever with Lori Otto writing a detailed account of his life and loves as he continues his studies at Columbia University. I always had a bit of mixed feelings when it came to Trey but he has definitely become a truly good young man, much like his father Jack. He's bright and caring and always gives his all. In this book, he is torn between his high school girlfriend, Zaina, and the outgoing and sweet Coley, who he is currently mentoring on the school newspaper. The sparks that are immediate between Trey and Coley were never quite there when it came to Zaina. Truth be told, I never cared much for her and I was happy to see Trey find someone that could truly complete him, much like his mother Emi did for his Dad all those years ago.

Beyond the burgeoning romance and the aftermath of his inevitable breakup with Zaina, there is an underlying story about the sexual violence against women which is carefully crafted and presented quite well. As a news story that involves friends of both Trey and Coley, it's a delicate process to be able to gather the facts and tell it right. Otto delves deep into their process and the unfortunate carnage that lies in the perpetrator's wake as events unfold and their love story becomes part of it as well.

The entire Holland crew appears when needed and provides that ongoing support to Trey and even for Coley as their affair becomes known and prominent characters are affected. I liked Trey and the way he conducts himself. The immense loyalty he feels is tested often in this book and it is handled well.

It was great to be back with a family of characters I have grown to truly love and I look forward to more as Otto is writing once more.

4 solid stars.

First I need to share the author's note: “Portions of this book deal with the sensitive subject of rape and sexual abuse. While the incidents are not 'experienced' first hand, they are retold in hindsight by characters. The descriptions of the events are brief, and while they are not graphic, they may be considered disturbing to some.” This novel is a spin-off of previous series by Lori, but it's a standalone. There´s no need to read the previous series but if you do it’ll be so much more rewarding and enjoyable. I’ve known Trey since he was born and through this book I’ve watch him become a man. And OH WHAT A MAN! Trey Holland: kind, caring, thoughtful, loyal and smart. Young, but always mature for his age, he's very reasonable and always with a good on his shoulder. Trey is THE-MAN-TO-BE. You’ll see him struggle to keep his long distance relationship of 4 years with his high school sweetheart, somehow he’s trying to much and forcing things too much, when it is supposed to feel natural but he realizes that when you have to “try too much” things are not right.
Then he meets Coley Fitzsimmons and his whole life changes, she shakes his world and he finds himself having an inner battle trying to do the “right thing” when his mind tell him something and his heart and emotions pulls at him in the opposite direction. He feels such a strong connection with Coley that he no choice but to surrender to it.
Coley is such an amazing character; a strong, independent, courageous woman. She’s been through so much, but at the same time she has overcome a lot. She’s very passionate about everything she does, and the best way to express herself, is through words and more specifically through poetry.
This book touch some sensitive topics that apply in our day to day lives in our society, and the approach that the author gives to it in the book offers you some perception of what the people that’s been through those unfortunate situations, really feel. And of course the subject is developed so well by the author that it leaves you feeling everything the characters are going through as well.
This story has everything you are looking for: love, loss, joy, anger, sadness, lust, even humor and a little bit of suspense. Also I consider it to be very educational given the subject matter.
Once again, I’m in awe of Lori an her amazing gift of delivering such stories, for me, this is her best work so far, and yes I know I always say this, but is not my fault that she always exceeds herself. Materpiece!!!
What more is there left to say other than; you seriously won’t regret reading this 5+stars book. Totally going to the top of my best reads in 2016. I really, really loved this story.
Because love...

It's no secret that Lori L. Otto is one of my favorite authors to read. The world that she has created for her readers makes you want to stay there forever. One if my favorite things about her stories is that yes they can be read as standalones (unless part of a series) but they all are interwoven and the reading experience is enhanced when you have read them all.
If you are caught up on her novels, you already know and probably love Trey. In the Wake of Wanting, there were times I felt like I could probably slap him with how he was acting. Go figure Trey acting like a normal teenager but his kindness and ability to stand up for what he believes in makes you fall in love a little more. I wasn't sure about Coley at first because I didn't know her. But Lori developed her into a strong goddess that you couldn't help not loving her.
There are some pretty deep trigger subjects that are focused on but Lori writes about them sensitive gentleness but seriousness of the matter and I love that Lori isn't afraid to go there. Another wonderful read from Lori.

Well written, new adult romance with themes of celebrity, sexual assault/crimes, and family. It started out a bit slow, yet the story held my interest. When the main characters, Trey and Coley, eventually get together the story moved super fast with all the drama and developments surrounding Trey and his friends. I started to get bored with the romance because of the crazy fast instalove that happened, with the overdoing of sharing feelings and saying some really cheesy stuff I’m sure the author wanted to sound deep. At times I felt like I was reading about adults and not an 18 and 19 year old. The poetry aspect was pretty cool until it started to become repetitive and overdone by the end of the story. By about 70% in I felt like the story was over, but it continued on at a glacial pace with way too many details that left me feeling bored. I ended up skimming the last 15% because I just wanted to see if anything else happened. Overall it was a good story, just a bit too long and repetitive for my tastes.

From the moment I first read Lori Otto's books, I have been a huge fan and am always eagerly waiting for a new book to come out. After reading the Emi Lost and Found series, I quickly fell in love with all of these characters, and this is one book I was so excited to see Lori write.

Before I begin, I want to say that this book involves a sensitive subject, and I feel I need to share Lori's warning before I go any further:

"AUTHOR'S NOTE: Portions of this book deal with the sensitive subject of rape and sexual abuse. While the incidents are not 'experienced' first hand, they are retold in hindsight by characters. The descriptions of the events are brief, and while they are not graphic, they may be considered disturbing to some."

I would hate for someone to get interested in this book and then be traumatized because they weren't expecting the subject in this book.

This book will attract your attention from beginning to end and, once you meet Trey Holland, you will immediately fall for him. I may have been swooning many times during this book because, even though no one is perfect, Trey is pretty darn close. This young man has a heart of gold, who will do anything he feels necessary to help someone, and he loves with everything he has.

Trey may be from royalty because everyone knows who the Holland family is, but he is so humble. He believes in excelling in anything he does and only wants to help people while making his own place in the world.

When Coley walks into his journalism class, she immediately captivates him. She’s different from everyone he has ever known. I loved her immediately. She is down-to-earth and so easy to fall in love with, too. Of course, she knows who Trey is and seems to keep embarrassing herself in front of him, and that made her character so easy to love.

When Trey finds out his friend Asher isn’t who he thought he was and causes danger on campus, Trey and Coley work together to get to the bottom of it. They want answers and are determined to get them. I must say that, several times in this book, I cringed and that’s something I never do with a book. But, Asher is such a monster, who as they say is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. He certainly had me fooled from the beginning. Looks can always be deceiving.

The more time Trey and Coley spend together, the more you feel their connection. They work so well together, and not just professionally. They are perfect together in every way. This couple is so easy to love. Trey is one of the most romantic men I have ever read, and Coley’s poems to him will leave you breathless. I really enjoyed getting all of the Hollands because these characters feel like family to me. I fell in love with Jack and then Jon, but Trey sure makes it harder to choose which one I love the most.

Lori’s writing is in-depth and so captivating. There wasn’t a moment in this book that I was bored. I was pulled in from the beginning and even had quite a book hangover after reading this book. I am enjoying Lori’s books more and more, and I cannot wait to see what Lori writes next because I know it will be another book I will devour by her.
