Hizzoner’s ferry dust

Mayor Bloomberg yesterday rhapsodized over the city’s blossoming ferry system, saying that the boats are so successful they might one day use MetroCards and offer free subway transfers.

“Why shouldn’t you be able to use it [your MetroCard] on the ferry as well as the subway?” he said on his weekly live radio show with John Gambling.

Hizzoner added, “It would be great to do those kinds of things, free transfers, who knows?”

Not entirely sharing his enthusiasm was Joseph Lhota, head of the cash-strapped subway system.

Lhota — speaking at a transportation forum in Midtown — said he supported the idea of adding MetroCards to city ferries.

But then he threw cold water on the idea of free transfers.

“I’m not sure how that would come about. The MTA is in no position to share its revenue with the ferries,” he said.
