May 3, 2012 - PRLog -- Dealing with your snoring problem can be difficult, but take note of a number of snoring solutions, from proper breathing to medical treatment.

More than 30% of the population experience snoring a few times or every night. Many of these people need help because they are either disturbing other people’s sleep or are having underlying health problems. Matt James talks about snoring and solutions on a website.

Snoring means there is something in your throat or tongue. It could be a fatty tissue or abnormal tissue growth or abnormally relaxed muscles that get in the way of good breathing during sleep. The flaps of tissue touching each other during sleep vibrate and cause that ugly snoring sound. The snorer usually does not realize they are snoring until someone tells them so. If someone tells you they are bothered by your snore, do not feel bad. Instead, get professional medical help. An otolaryngologist can help you to the path of treatment.

Snoring may be associated with sleep apnea, a condition in which interruptions in breathing occur during sleep. Breathing interruptions may cause reduction of oxygen levels in the blood, irregular heart rhythm, and elevated blood pressure. Sleep apnea is a health concern that many loud snorers suffer from—oftentimes without knowing it.  Matt James warns people who are chronic snorers to have themselves screened for sleep apnea.

“There are certain simple ways to reduce chances of snoring,” says James. “One solution is to keep away from sleeping pills, cigarettes, and alcohol.” He explains that sleeping pills may put you to sleep, but they relax the nervous system and muscles, including those in the throat. On the other hand, nicotine in smoke and alcohol irritates the throat passages and stimulate secretion of mucus, which lead to congestion. Dairy products are to be avoided as well, for they increase mucus secretions too.

He also talks about devices, like snoring mouthpiece and chin strap, which can help prevent snoring at night. “These devices improve the position of your lower jaw and tongue during sleep to facilitate in better air passage.”
