Reuben Heaven: Brent’s Deli - Northridge, CA

As home of the famous Black Pastrami Reuben, Brent’s Deli will not let you (or your stomach) down!

This traditional Jewish delicatessen has lots of regulars. Be aware that you might feel a little out of the loop at first, but after a few visits, you’ll be part of the family. The servers are sweet and attentive to everyone. Just make sure to avoid peak hours as they have a lengthy wait at times.

The Pastrami Reuben is their #1 item, ordered by a guest every couple minutes. It’s served on grilled rye bread with melted Swiss cheese, hot sauerkraut and Russian dressing. The price tag is $14, and this is something you definitely NEED to split with a friend. You pick the fries you want on the side (sweet, curly, thin, or steak) and you should get an extra side of Russian dressing for added flavor, if you can handle it.

Breakfast is served all day at Brent’s Deli, “as it should be"—duh. So, of course, I ordered a Belgian Waffle for lunch. Add-ons: Fruits and caramelized nuts.

Also try out the signature Jewish sides, Blintzes and Latkes, which were mini pieces of heaven served with sour cream and jam. Blintzes, similar to crepes, are thin pancakes wrapped around some yummy cheese. Latkes, similar to hash browns, are seasoned potato pancakes.

Their soups are fantastic additions. Between of the Matzo Ball, the Mushroom Beef Barley, and the Cabbage, the last one stole my heart. Although it includes cabbage and beef, it’s very sweet, so if you’re not into that then you should go with the barley.

Restaurants get brownie points in my mind when they offer cream soda, so yay for Brent’s Deli! They also offer “Chocolate Egg Cream” which is pretty much half soda water and half chocolate milk—not bad! I had some of it alongside my strawberry cheesecake. The desserts were good, but they’re made in the morning, not per order.

FYI, I didn’t get to try some of their hits, like the Fresh Cod and Reuben Fries. Tell us what you think next time you go there!

In my opinion, Brent’s Deli is the place to go for both breakfast foods and for whenever you feel like SPLITTING a hefty Reuben. So… am I Jewish yet?
