How to pick the right marathon running shoes

We’re ready to kick-off our weekly Monday KDF Marathon Minute. This week, we’re talking about your feet and the shoes you put on them.

If you’re a beginner runner, you are going to need to buy your first pair of running shoes. This information goes for walkers, too.

Running shoes aren’t cheap - plan to spend anywhere from $80-$160. Remember this, if you are tempted to skimp, what you save on the shoes you may end up paying for in medical bills.

Go to a store which specializes in running - not a big-box or department store. You can Google stores near your home or check the phone book to find a specialty store.

Sports specific stores employ actual runners who will fit you with the right shoe for your body weight, the type of running you’re planning on doing and any bi-mechanical problems you may have.

The salesperson will ask you take a quick run (often outside on the sidewalk, so be sure you wear the correct clothing.) This allows them to take a look at how you run in the shoe. This also gives you a chance to ensure the fit is correct before you take the shoes home.

Running shoes wear out and when they do, they stop providing the support your body needs to perform safely. Shoes should be replaced every 300 to 500 miles. Keep track of the date that you bought them in your training log. We’ll discuss the importance of training logs in a future article.

Remember, the KDF Norton Sports Health Free Training program will meet for their group run at 8 a.m. at Seneca Park on Saturday, Jan. 23. Even if you didn’t make it to the kick off meeting, you can show up and take part.
