Welcome
Office of the Independent Monitor
This is the website of the Office of the
Independent Monitor of the Los Angeles Unified School District
Special Education Department.
The Office of the Independent Monitor (OIM) is
the oversight agency of the Los Angeles Unified School District’s
special education program. LAUSD
has been under federal court oversight since 1996 for systemic
non-compliance of special education law. The Independent Monitor
was appointed in May, 2003 after a modification of the original
consent decree, Chanda Smith v. LAUSD.
The Independent Monitor is responsible for
determining whether LAUSD meets compliance with the Modified
Consent Decree and special education law, by June 30, 2006.
The Independent Monitoring Team hopes this
website will be useful for the LAUSD community in engaging with
the Modified Consent Decree process. Please use the navigation
link located on the left to find the Independent Monitor's
reports, and other information.
