Digital Media M&A Trends -- Matt Gielen (Co-Founder & CEO, Electric Monster)

Matt Gielen is the Co-Founder & CEO of Electric Monster, a portfolio company of digital content properties in the general entertainment and kids and family space. Matt started his career in production and audience development at Driver Digital, then served as VP of Programming & Audience Development at Frederator. In 2016, he founded Little Monster Media Co., an agency that helps brands and publishers build out their YouTube audience, which was later acquired by his latest venture Electric Monster.

In this episode, Matt and I talk about the growth of creator-driven business and the recent flurry of digital media acquisitions. From consolidation among digital publishers (Vox and Group Nine, Vice and Refinery29) to creator-first media companies (Mythical Entertainment and Smosh, Moonbug and Cocomelon), M&A activity has reached record heights over the last 12 months. Matt offers some insight into Electric Monster’s acquisition of React Media (formerly Fine Bros. Entertainment) and their future ambitions. Finally, we talk about the growth of YouTube Shorts, increasing the level of transparency from social platforms, and why creator funds don’t pay very well.

Democratizing Audio Content Creation -- Austin Petersmith (Founder & CEO, Racket)

Austin Petersmith is the Founder & CEO of Racket, an app for creating and sharing 99-second audio clips. Austin started his career in journalism before becoming a developer evangelist for early SaaS products. In 2014, he started an email newsletter called ReadThisThing that was acquired by Inside.com, where he ultimately served as President & GM. Austin is also a General Partner at Coughdrop Capital, investing in early-stage startups with his brother Stu.

In this episode, Austin and I explore the evolution of digital audio. We discuss a few of podcasting’s inherent problems, the competition among social networks to roll out audio formats, and how much the Clubhouse-inspired hype cycle mirrors reality. We also touch on the “building in public” trend and other transparency movements among early-stage SaaS companies. Finally, Austin shares his approach to startup investing and offers advice to those looking to write their first angel checks.

Culture-Fitting Content for Global Audiences -- Teresa Phillips (Co-Founder & CEO, Spherex)

Culture-Fitting Content for Global Audiences -- Teresa Phillips (Co-Founder & CEO, Spherex)

Teresa Phillips is the Co-Founder & CEO of Spherex, a technology company that uses machine learning to adapt entertainment content for international audiences. Teresa started her career in the U.S. Army, serving tours of duty at the Pentagon and NATO’s Allied Command Operations. She later worked as a Group VP of Business Operations at Time Warner Cable and VP of Business Intelligence at Yahoo before launching her first company, an educational video marketplace called Graspr in 2006. She then served as SVP for V2 Solutions before co-founding Spherex in early 2018.

In this episode, Teresa and I discuss the challenge of localizing and cultural fitting content for international audiences. Entertainment companies must navigate complex regulatory, economic, and cultural environments in each new market, so it’s no surprise that cultural missteps are fairly common – from Netflix running afoul of the Singaporean government for hosting drug-related content to the infamous Cuties movie poster debacle here in the U.S. In response, Teresa shares how Spherex uses technology and human expertise to help media companies successfully localize and extend their content to foreign markets. Finally, we comment on Netflix’s recent foray into gaming, ARPU differences between AVOD and SVOD platforms, and future M&A targets as media consolidation continues.

Larissa has spent over a decade working for non-profits, including Children’s Home Network, St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Autism Speaks, and the Alzheimer’s Association. Prior to Tiltify, Larissa served as the Vice President of Strategic and Brand Partnerships for the United Way.

In this episode, Larissa and I discuss the evolution of online giving, particularly in the context of creator-driven fundraising campaigns. Larissa highlights how the pandemic accelerated non-profits’ digital transformations while broader cultural changes and ongoing social justice movements have led more brands to lean into cause marketing. Larissa’s advice to modern CMOs is “Your brand needs to stand for something,” so she encourages all companies to put together a social impact strategy.

Investing in the Future of the Creator Economy -- Rex Woodbury (Principal, Index Ventures)

Investing in the Future of the Creator Economy -- Rex Woodbury (Principal, Index Ventures)

Rex Woodbury is a Principal at Index Ventures, focusing primarily on the creator economy. Rex started his career in investment banking at Goldman Sachs, during which he time he also co-founded Worthy, an LGBTQ+ mentorship organization. Prior to Index, he worked in impact investing at the Rise Fund, growth investing at TPG, and growth strategy at Airtable. He publishes a weekly newsletter called Digital Native to share his thoughts about the intersection of people and technology.

In this episode, Rex and I explore the forces shaping the future of the creator economy. We discuss the generational shift from Millennials, who grew up believing content should be free (that is, ad supported), to Gen Z, which is embracing subscriptions and online commerce. This coincides with the move from a centralized Web 2.0 era to a more decentralized Web 3.0 future.

We’ve also witnessed the loss of public trust in institutions, from government to corporations. This has led to a surge of populism in everything from politics (see Trump, Bernie, AOC) to finance (GameStop, Dogecoin, AMC). As Rex quips during our conversation, “What is Tesla [stock] other than a social token for Elon Musk?”

As the Elon example illustrates, power is shifting to individuals. It’s easier than ever to be an independent creator, freelancer, or entrepreneur. Artists like Dave Chapelle and Taylor Swift are challenging powerful institutions like cable networks and record labels (and winning!).

All of this is playing out on social media in real time. If the 2010s were the decade of online status, the 2020s are about belonging. Today’s fans relate more to the authenticity of Charlie D’Amelio than the idealized perfection of Chloe Kardashian. Upstarts like Poparazzi, Dispo, and BeReal are challenging the Instagram status quo as we rethink social norms about what we share online and with whom.

So what does the future hold? Rex and I debate how Facebook should respond to its innovator’s dilemma, and we predict continued business model innovation as the Internet shifts from an advertising to commerce-driven model. Finally, we analyze three of the most hotly contested battlegrounds in social media: (1) live audio, (2) short-form video, and (3) AR/VR.

Steve was also a founding member of the American Association of Independent Music and has been an active angel investor and advisor to several companies over the years.

In this episode, Steve and I discuss the future of online events, from industry conferences to music festivals. We explore the rise of participatory entertainment, such as Twitch live streams and HG Trivia, and Steve shares Shindig’s mission to reinvent virtual events to give the audience more of a voice. Finally, we examine how the pandemic accelerated digital trends around content creation and consumption, and Steve predicts this will lead to even greater interactivity for both virtual and hybrid events going forward.

Celebrities vs. Influencers: The Changing Nature of Fame -- Evan Britton (Founder, Famous Birthdays)

Evan Britton is the Founder of Famous Birthdays, a website that profiles celebrities and social media stars in what Evan describes as "Wikipedia for Generation Z." Prior to Famous Birthdays, Evan founded Site Launcher to offer services to web domain registrants and later founded ResourceWebs, which operated a network of educational web properties.

In this episode, Evan and I examine the collision of traditional celebrities and Internet personalities. Actors, musicians, and pro athletes are now building large social audiences and collaborating with online influencers, like Will Smith bungee jumping with Yes Theory or J. Lo’s music video with Charlie D’Amelio. Evan’s team has followed these changes closely; Famous Birthdays originally featured high-profile celebrities but quickly responded to user demand to add YouTube, Vine, and Instagram creators. Finally, Evan and I discuss the rise of new social networks and debate whether creators and brands should seek to build relationships and monetize their fans on or off social platforms.

NFTs, Live Audio, and the Return to IRL Events -- Jim Louderback (GM & SVP VidCon, Viacom)

Jim Louderback is the GM & SVP VidCon at Viacom, overseeing the world’s largest event series for online video creators, fans, and industry executives. Jim began his career in consulting and publishing, helping companies navigate the transformation to online media. In 2007, he became the CEO of Revision3, one of the first online video networks, which Discovery acquired in 2012. Since then, he’s spent his time investing in and advising early stage companies before joining VidCon full time in 2017.

This is a special round 2 episode with Jim, who originally joined me back in January 2019! In this latest conversation, we talk about how the pandemic has sparked yet another digital transformation in Jim’s career. He started off working in magazines at the dawn of the Internet, then spent time in radio and TV when content started going online, and now he’s helped VidCon evolve from a live event business to a company that builds online and offline communities.

Jim and I also explore the rise of audio social platforms, from Clubhouse to Fireside and Twitter Spaces. Some are championing the spontaneity and exclusivity of live ephemeral experiences while others are taking an asynchronous approach to promote scaled and shareable online conversations.

Finally, we examine the recent hype around non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and their place in both the physical and virtual worlds. Jim predicts that as we increasingly colonize the metaverse, our NFTs will live there, primarily as a means of self-expression.

Jason explains how TikTok has figured out algorithmic content recommendations better than anyone else, and I predict that a similar approach will soon be applied to other forms of entertainment like music and news. Finally, we debate the future of online privacy, and Jason warns brands not to neglect their websites and blogs in favor of social media entirely, as social platforms can rewrite the rules overnight.

Redefining Online Speech & Identity: Is Social Media Your Living Room or the Town Square? -- Phil Ranta (COO, Wormhole Labs)

Redefining Online Speech & Identity: Is Social Media Your Living Room or the Town Square? -- Phil Ranta (COO, Wormhole Labs)

Phil Ranta is the COO of Wormhole Labs, a technology engine that enables users to immerse themselves in live virtual experiences. Phil has spent more than a decade in the digital media industry, first as an Executive Producer for Viva! Vision and later as VP of Networks at Fullscreen. He went on to serve as COO of Studio71, Head of Creators at Mobcrush, and most recently as Head of Gaming Creators, North America at Facebook.

This is a special round 2 episode with Phil, who originally joined me back in November 2015 as one of my first guests! In this latest conversation, we debate whether social media is a public forum (the Town Square) or a private community (one’s Living Room) and the impact that has on online speech and identity.

We also talk about the “Great Platform Unbundling,” as more exclusive social platforms and niche groups emerge online. What are the economic imperatives that social platforms face as they race for scale? Is this why organic reach often declines and platforms become “pay to play” as they mature? Or are there alternatives to advertising that can create sustainable monetization options for creators, such as user pay and commerce?

Finally, we examine how Gen Z and Gen Alpha are growing up on social media and the importance of teaching media literacy at a young age. Digital Media’s Impact on Global Culture -- Bastian Manintveld (Co-Founder & Executive Chairman, 2btube)

Bastian Manintveld is the Co-Founder & Executive Chairman of 2btube, a digital media group specializing in Spanish language content. Bastian started his career in television, working at On Demand Group in the UK and Spain before launching his first venture BeBanjo in 2008. BeBanjo was acquired by TDF Group in 2011.

In this episode, Bastian and I discuss how digital media defies traditional boundaries and shapes a global culture. Bastian first witnessed this generational shift at home when his kids lost interest in broadcast TV, turning instead to social platforms like YouTube. Bastian argues that online creators pioneered a new approach to building global audiences – one in which traditional borders, nationalities, and accents no longer matter. And finally, Bastian shares the key to successful partnerships and acquisitions, anticipates increased consolidation as media players battle for scale, and predicts that movie theaters will survive the pandemic.

How Video Chat Is Revolutionizing Online Dating -- Lizz Warner (Founder & CEO, Gleam)

Lizz Warner is the Founder & CEO of Gleam, a video-based dating app making it easier to meet your matches. Prior to Gleam, Lizz spent 6 years as a producer at BuzzFeed where she created the hit travel franchise Bring Me! She also worked with Snapchat and NBC as a video producer for the 2016 and 2018 Olympics, and more recently she served as an executive producer and digital content adviser for Biden for President.

In this episode, Lizz and I discuss how video chat is revolutionizing online dating. Given the difficulty with in-person meetups during the pandemic, singles are turning to video calls as a way to meet new matches. Perhaps this signals the next platform shift, after web-based dating sites disrupted traditional matchmakers, only to later be upended by mobile apps. Finally, Lizz predicts that social networks may ultimately become better matchmakers than dedicated dating apps, and we explore the rebellion against the so-called “Instagram aesthetic” as some influencers abandon the cult of perfection traditionally cultivated on social platforms.

TikTok Deep Dive: Why 2020 Was the Year of Short-Form Video -- Brendan Gahan (Chief Social Officer, Mekanism)

TikTok Deep Dive: Why 2020 Was the Year of Short-Form Video -- Brendan Gahan (Chief Social Officer, Mekanism)

Brendan Gahan is the Chief Social Officer of Mekanism, a full-service creative agency that specializes in social content. Prior to Mekanism, Brendan served as VP of Brand Strategy for Fullscreen and then founded social-first agency Epic Signal, which was acquired by Mekanism in 2015.

Brendan and I pack a lot into this episode, focusing on why 2020 was a breakout year for short-form video. TikTok is the poster child for the short-form video movement, though it’s facing increased competition from clones (e.g. Byte and Triller in the U.S., Roposo and Moj in India) as well as established social platforms like YouTube (Shorts), Snapchat (Spotlight), and Facebook (Lasso, Instagram Reels, and Collab).

So why the short-form video gold rush? Brendan argues the format’s popularity in China is a leading indicator for growth in the West. New platforms like TikTok offer creators a fun and easy approach to content creation and a chance to quickly grow their audience. And for tech companies, short-form video is the next battleground feature for both audience attention and monetization, given the opportunity to serve so many ad breaks between clips.

Finally, we explore how the social media landscape is becoming increasingly fragmented as people begin skewing toward private channels like Discord, Community, and OnlyFans. We also evaluate Reddit’s acquisition of Dubsmash (which Brendan calls a “head scratcher”), and Brendan shares his 2021 social media predictions, specifically (1) the rise of dark social, (2) continued growth of live streaming and ecommerce, and (3) creator-driven influencer products.

Leveraging AI to Supercharge Influencer Marketing -- Ricky Ray Butler (CEO, Branded Entertainment Network)

Ricky Ray Butler is the CEO of Branded Entertainment Network (BEN), a global entertainment marketing company that specializes in brand integrations across streaming, TV, film, music, and influencer programming. Prior to BEN, he founded Blue Frog Video Marketing, served as Director of Brand Integration at Familylink.com, and founded Plaid Social Labs, which was acquired by BEN in 2015.

In this episode, Ricky and I discuss the powerful applications of AI to influencer marketing. Ricky explains the difference between structured and unstructured data and suggests that unstructured data (particularly audio) holds the key to better branded content performance. We also touch on the DOJ’s anti-trust suit against Facebook, BEN’s recent acquisition of TubeBuddy, and Dave Chappelle’s public battle against Comedy Central. Finally, Ricky argues that YT Shorts – not IG Reels – are the true competitor to TikTok and reminds us that there are hundreds of emerging Chinese social platforms, many of which will ultimately make their way to the West.

We also examine the evolution of retail – not just the rise of online shopping but also how brands like Tesla and Nordstrom are reimagining the retail experience. How Social Media Has Revolutionized Sports & Politics -- Amir Zonozi (Co-Founder & President, Zoomph)

How Social Media Has Revolutionized Sports & Politics -- Amir Zonozi (Co-Founder & President, Zoomph)

Amir Zonozi is the Co-Founder & President of Zoomph, an audience intelligence and sponsorship measurement tool for sports teams, leagues, and agencies. Amir started his career in social media strategy and management before taking the entrepreneurial leap and launching Zoomph in 2014.

In this episode, we examine how social media has fundamentally changed sports and politics. Perhaps the most striking example from the sports world is the popularity of individual athletes over teams. Not only have fantasy sports emphasized individual over team performance, but social media has made all-star athletes more accessible to fans than ever before. And foreign viewers, who don’t share the team’s geographic affiliation, are more likely to care about their favorite star players. Major league athletes have become online influencers in their own right; for example, Juju Smith-Schuster augments his performance on the field with gaming streams on Twitch, lifestyle content on Instagram, and his own shoe line with Adidas.

The same phenomenon can be observed in politics. Social platforms like Twitter and Facebook have made politicians more accessible and accountable to their constituents. Donald Trump and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have become canonical examples of politicians who take to social media to engage directly with their supporters. And now that the genie is out of the bottle, the political arena – much like the world of sports – is forever changed by social media.

Superfandom, Content Distribution, and the Future of Kids Entertainment -- Patrick Reese (General Manager of CoComelon, Moonbug Entertainment)

Superfandom, Content Distribution, and the Future of Kids Entertainment -- Patrick Reese (General Manager of CoComelon, Moonbug Entertainment)

Patrick Reese is the General Manager of CoComelon, which creates 3D animation content for children. CoComelon is the world’s second most-viewed and third most-subscribed YouTube channel in the world and was acquired by Moonbug Entertainment earlier this year. Patrick started his career in independent film and worked as a Hollywood assistant to Lia Buman and later Peter Chernin. Prior to CoComelon, Patrick worked in strategy and business development at Fullscreen.

Patrick and I cover a lot of ground in this episode, starting with the power of niche content and superfandom exemplified by the Chernin Group’s portfolio companies like Rooster Teeth, Crunchyroll, and Barstool Sports. Patrick also shares his experience building distribution strategies for content partners, often extending audience and monetization beyond YouTube to platforms like Facebook and Twitter. CoComelon, for example, rose to success on YouTube by consistently releasing a single premium 3D animation video per week, which was contrary to most competing channels that focused more on quantity than quality at the time. But Cocomelon’s commitment to quality served it well long term, catapulting it to success not just on YouTube but also making it a top performing property on Netflix and best-selling kids toy brand. Finally, we touch on a number of recent news items, including the DOJ’s anti-trust suit against Google, Snap’s $50B valuation, and the downfall of Quibi.

She started her career in public relations, then transitioned to a full-time producer and performer before launching RushTix in March 2015.

In this episode, Jill explains how she pivoted her business this year amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. RushTix started as a subscription event membership for local arts and cultural events, so when live events were no longer practical, Jill refocused the company on live streaming interactive comedy shows. She encourages people to think of live streaming as an audience engagement tool and shares how RushTix decides when to host streams via social platforms like Twitch, Facebook, and Instagram versus creating private streams on its site. Finally, we discuss technical improvements like super low latency that are improving user experience and offer a few predictions for the future of live streaming.

But we also explore the potential dark sides of these new technologies, from deep fakes to Internet scams, and what safeguards can be put in place to keep us safe. Embracing the Age of Influence (Neal Schaffer -- Founder, PDCA Social)

Neal Schaffer is an international speaker, author, and consultant who focuses on digital and social marketing strategies. As Founder of PDCA Social, he helps businesses navigate digital transformations and grow their online audience. His latest book The Age of Influence explains the meteoric rise of influencer marketing and how brands can successfully work with social influencers.

In this episode, Neal explains that the early days of social media were similar to word-of-mouth marketing. Those days are long gone, however, as social platforms increasingly gate audiences and have become pay-to-play environments. He argues that now influencers are a way for brands to incite word of mouth and predicts that influencer marketing will soon be a dedicate line item in most advertisers’ budgets. Finally, he highlights examples of brands that have turned their customers into brand advocates, such as Disney Parks and Ritz Carlton, both of which have adopted a 100% UGC social strategy.

Greg Kampanis is the SVP of Global Digital Networks for Blue Ant Media, an international content producer, distributor, and channel operator. Blue Ant is also the parent company of Omnia Media, a gamer talent network that creates social content and podcast shows for digital and OTT platforms. Greg started his career in consulting then transitioned into entertainment after grad school, working in business development at Viacom. He later served as SVP of Business Development and Operations for South Park Digital Studios and most recently as SVP, Studio for izo.

In this episode, Greg and I examine the diminishing power of traditional network brands like MTV as IP value has shifted to individual shows and talent. Greg cites South Park as a prime example of this phenomenon – a series that has not only managed to constantly reinvent itself and stay relevant among young audiences but one that has also paved the way for other adult animation content. We also debate the outcome of the streaming wars, particularly the fate of new entrants like Quibi and Peacock. Finally, we take a look at the growth of advertising for online gaming content and evaluate solutions for better measurement between traditional and digital media platforms.

Live Episode! The Intersection of Journalism and Online Video -– Christian Bennett (Executive Editor of Video Journalism, The Guardian)

Live Episode! The Intersection of Journalism and Online Video -– Christian Bennett (Executive Editor of Video Journalism, The Guardian)

Christian Bennett is the Executive Editor of Video Journalism at The Guardian, one of the UK’s oldest and most trusted publications. Christian studied radio and television at Bournemouth University and began his career as a video editor for RDF Television. Since then, he has spent nearly 12 years helping to shape The Guardian’s video strategy.

This special live episode took place on February 21, 2020 at VidCon London. During our discussion, Christian explains how the Internet fundamentally changed The Guardian’s business, providing it with a global platform virtually overnight. Christian offers his take on digital-first news publishers, describes how The Guardian chooses which stories to cover, and shares how his team differentiates its content from broadcast news.

We also asses two structural issues at the intersection of social media and journalism: the first, that social platforms create echo chambers in which users surround themselves with friends and news coverage that reinforce their political preferences and biases. Secondly, social platforms are incentivized to reward controversy because content that generates high engagement creates more opportunities for ad monetization. Finally, we address the importance of building trust with one’s audience, especially given the prevalence of fake news and a higher degree of public skepticism of news media.

Redefining the Broadcast: The Future of Live Streaming -- Ari Evans (Founder & CEO, Maestro)

Ari Evans is the Founder & CEO of Maestro, an engagement and analytics platform for enterprise live streamers. Prior to launching Maestro, Ari worked as an analyst at Goldman Sachs, a product manager at Zynga, and a developer team lead for Ultra Music Festival. More recently, he served as Founder & CEO of LessThan3, which created virtual venues for live music events to be experienced online.

In this episode, Ari and I discuss the future of gaming, esports, and live streaming. Ari explains that he initially set out to build live streaming software for the music industry but ultimately pivoted to the gaming space because it offered a larger addressable market and more recurring revenue opportunities than one-off music festivals. He argues that game publishers capture the majority of value in esports today because they control the underlying IP. Meanwhile, platform aggregators Google and Facebook capture most of the value in the gaming space more broadly by controlling online advertising and taking a percentage of subscriptions and in-app purchases. As a result, he predicts more experimentation around pricing and monetization models, such as offering VIP streaming experiences and driving in-game transactions from within a live stream.

Jesse started her career in entertainment, landing a part as a series regular on a Nickelodeon show before launching her own program: “The Valley Girl Show.” The Emmy nominated talk show, which started on YouTube and later transitioned to television, featured interviews with legendary entrepreneurs like Mark Cuban, Sheryl Sandberg, Jessica Alba, and Eric Schmidt. Jesse also interviewed many aspiring female entrepreneurs and began angel investing before raising her first venture fund.

In this episode, Jesse shares her early experience in media as well as her frustration with the industry’s outdated business models. She calls for alternatives to sponsorship-based monetization, highlighting the success of her portfolio company The Skimm’s hybrid model of ads and paid subscriptions. Finally, Jesse explains how Halogen’s mission to invest in women-led startups is good for business, as female leaders typically raise half as much money, exit one year earlier, and double the average returns of their male counterparts.

The Evolution of Influencer Marketing -- Emily Fonda & Jay Kent-Hume (Co-Founders, The Sociable Society)

The Evolution of Influencer Marketing -- Emily Fonda & Jay Kent-Hume (Co-Founders, The Sociable Society)

Emily Fonda and Jay Kent-Hume are the Co-Founders of The Sociable Society, a talent management firm and influencer marketing agency that works with influencers across the U.S. and Canada. Prior to launching The Sociable Society, Emily worked in public relations and Jay worked in staffing and recruitment.

In this episode, Jay and Emily discuss the evolution of influencer marketing over the past decade and their predictions for the future. We explore how product reviews and recommendations shifted from word of mouth and celebrity endorsements to online ratings and influencer recommendations. We also evaluate the impact of social media and influencer marketing on politics, sports, and consumerism, particularly in a world of one-click shopping and next-day shipping. Finally, Emily and Jay describe the move away from microinfluencers and an emphasis on longer term partnerships between brands and high profile creators, and we predict more FTC regulation and more product placement coming to the world of influencer marketing.

Startups vs. Incumbents: Innovation in Media and Entertainment -- Eric Peckham (Media Columnist, TechCrunch)

Startups vs. Incumbents: Innovation in Media and Entertainment -- Eric Peckham (Media Columnist, TechCrunch)

Eric Peckham is an analyst for TechCrunch and the creator of the Monetizing Media newsletter. Earlier in his career, he worked in startups and venture capital in New York and Los Angeles.

In this episode, Eric and I discuss how media industry realignment favors incumbents over new entrants – a seemingly new phenomenon given platform shifts had historically offered greater opportunity for startups. According to Eric, there are a few elements at play. For one, many startups are staying private longer and opting for strategic exits rather than IPOs, which makes it easier for cash-rich tech giants to acquire would-be competitors. What’s more, the Internet often creates “winner take all” or at least “winner take most” dynamics, which can stifle competitive innovation once an incumbent becomes entrenched. And finally, our global anti-trust laws are incredibly outdated. Despite calls to update them for the Internet age, some politicians worry about hamstringing domestic companies in the face of foreign competitors.
