Rashmi Kumar whose debut book Stilettos in the Newsroom was released recently has been kind enough to offer a copy of her book for readers of this blog. Hi Amit: Thanks for your question. What inspired me to write this book was the fact that a lot was being said and written about all sectors. Very little was known about what goes inside a newsroom — the struggle behind giving a headline — missing a deadline etc. Also the fact I had to just get out my observations/experiences and make an account of all that.

Hi Chinmayi… thanks for that interesting question, it’s a question that I love answering the most! Being a journalist, I am part of the fraternity and so I’d address this as OUR shortcoming rather than pointing fingers at my bretheren! Media was quick to point this out as a chick-lit without realising the fact that it had more elements of a dude-lit 🙂 The book is filled with male characters!! Just because the book’s protagonist is a female, doesn’t make it a chick-lit.
It upset me earlier, but, I guess with time, I have learnt to take the bouquets and brickbats with equal panache.

I am reading “A Case of Exploding Mangoes” by Mohammed Hanif which has an interesting title, much the same as “Stilettos in the Newsroom”.
Questions for Rashmi:
How did you come up with the book title? Who gave you the inspiration? and was it easy to arrive at a suitable title?

Hi there… The book title was the most challenging part. I wanted something that could immediately grab attention, so I thought of titles like Black and White, Printline and Deadline etc… but these titles were too staid and going with the nature of the book I really wanted something more catchy and glamorous, and since stilettos — a fashion staement defines me the best — since not every women can carry it, I came up with this title.
As for what inspired me to write the book, why don’t u scroll up just a bit more and see my answer to Amit’s query.
