Garry Spence

Garry Spence

Garry Spence is one of the best known voices in the country, pulling in record-breaking listening figures for his drive time slot on Capital FM. In addition to his radio work, he plays at some of Edinburgh and Glasgow’s biggest venues every month.

In recent times he has supported David Guetta on his world tour dates in Scotland and just last year he was selected by MTV Networks to be the live show voice-over for the MTV EMA 2014. The show was broadcast live to over one billion people worldwide from The SSE Hydro in Glasgow.


Mickey McMonagle - Music Journalist

Mickey McMonagle

He is currently editor of magazines at the Sunday Mail, where 7Nights is the nation’s favourite entertainment mag. Mickey has a keen focus on Scottish music, a dedication to helping break new talent and a history of giving acts their first mag covers, awards and so on. He is also closely involved in the Sunday Mail and Daily Record’s online music coverage, as well as securing acts to perform at their awards events.

Mickey created and runs the Sunday Mail 7Nights Sessions charity shows at King Tut’s, a series of concerts bringing huge acts back to the venue for one-off gigs - so far they have included Glasvegas, Paolo Nutini, Deacon Blue, Gun, Texas, Embrace and many more.

Previously Mickey was Editor of respected Scots dance music magazine M8, where again he was closely involved in Scottish music, promoting events.


Donald MacLeod

Donald MacLeod

Donald MacLeod is the Managing Director of the CPL Entertainment Group, proprietor of Scotland’s premier Rock Club and live venue The Cathouse, as well as The Tunnel and The Garage on Sauchiehall Street which over the years has hosted a variety of acts from Prince, Queens of the Stone Age, Fun Lovin Criminals, and Tinchy Stryder. Over the years Donald also controlled the hugely successful CPL Live which promoted many artists, including Oasis, Fall Out Boy and Marilyn Manson. Donald has also been a radio DJ and currently writes a column in The Sunday Post.

As Chairman of both the Management Board and Fundraising Committee Donald devotes much of his time to Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy in Scotland, a non state-funded charity during his time at the helm has seen it steadily grow in terms of clinical interests, fundraising activity and simply raising awareness of the valuable work the therapists carry out.


Fiona Crichton

Fiona Crichton

Fiona has been Head of Partnerships at The SSE Hydro since it opened in September 2013. She is responsible for helping to attract some of the most prestigious brands to the venue via commercial sponsorship and manages all Partner accounts. The SSE Hydro, working with Consultants AEG Global Partnerships provides these brands direct access to highly targeted audiences which benefits both brand and venue.

Prior to joining The SECC and The SSE Hydro in 2008, Fiona was Head of Strategic Partnerships at STV, responsible for developing funded content for a variety of organisations and businesses.

As a child of the 70’s, Fiona’s music listening heritage is rooted in David Bowie, Stevie Wonder and Fleetwood Mac: however she is no stranger to a current Spotify playlist and has a keen interest in emerging talent, loving small venues such as Nice N’Sleazy and The Hug and Pint.

  • What kind of music are you looking for?

    Original artist music is more than welcome but please be aware that only popular music genres relevant to Capital FM will be considered for entry.

  • When can I register myself/my band?

    Submissions open at 6am on Monday 10th October and close at 4pm on Sunday 6th November.

  • What format can my audio be?

    Any really! But we would prefer mp3, mp4 or wav. Just make sure it’s less than 10MB.

  • How do I submit videos?

    Send us up to two links using the entry form – these can be to any public video service such as Youtube/Vimeo.

  • When do I have to be available?

    You have to be available for sound-check and rehearsals from 8am on Saturday 26th November as well as the evening event itself.

    You should also be available for sound check and a two track stripped back/ acoustic set on the evening of Wednesday 16th November in Glasgow.

  • What do you mean by ‘unsigned’?

    You can’t be signed to a UK record label or major music management company.

  • How will I be judged?

    Your entry will be scored against others on voice, music, arrangement, writing, entertainment value, creativity and overall performance.

  • When can we vote?

    Voting begins at 10am on 8th November and runs until 12pm on 15th November. Votes outside these times will not be counted.

  • How do we vote?

    Voting will be done via Twitter and will only be accepted from ‘open’ Twitter accounts. If you’ve set your Twitter status as ‘private’, your vote will not count.

    All tweets have to use the hashtag #CapitalOneToWatch followed by the hashtag of their chosen performer. The exact hashtag for each performer will be confirmed on this website before voting opens and only votes with the correct spelling will be counted.

  • Competition Terms & Conditions

    Capital FM’s One to Watch on Capital FM Scotland, October 2016

    RULES

    1. The following rules (“Specific Rules”) together with the general competition terms and conditions (which can be found at capitalfm.com/terms-conditions (the “Competition Terms and Conditions”) of Communicorp UK (as defined in the Competition Terms and Conditions) apply to ‘[Capital FM’s One to Watch]’ radio competition (the “Competition") which will run from 10th October 2016 to 17th November 2016 on Capital FM Scotland (the “Radio Station”).
    2. Anyone who enters the Competition (an “Entrant”) will be deemed to have read and accepted the Specific Rules and the Competition Terms and Conditions and will be bound by them.
    3. Artist Entry Rules

    4. To enter the Competition an Entrant must
      Go online to CapitalFM.com/Scotland and register their details.
      Entrants should upload 1 x photograph of artist/performer(s); a biography of artist(s); 1 x audio file of artist performing a single song. Option to include up to 2 x online video links of performance(s) e.g Youtube.
      You confirm the grant by you to the Radio Station and to Communicorp UK of a worldwide, perpetual, royalty-free licence to publish online and broadcast (on any broadcast platform) any aspect of your participation in this competition (including, but not limited to, the submitted photo, biographical information, audio and video(s), any other material submitted or recorded for the competition and, for the winner, all performances undertaken as part of this competition). The Radio Station and Communicorp UK shall be entitled to use any audio or video material submitted for, or recorded in the course of, this competition in any and all media at no cost to the Radio Station or Communicorp UK and you warrant that such use shall not infringe on the rights of any third party. Such use is not intended to limit your rights to claim ownership of your creative work, nor your rights to perform, edit or exploit your work in any way. Publication or broadcast of any material will be appropriately and accurately attributed to the composer and/or performer of the material.
      Online entry will open at 06:00 on 10th October and close at 16:00 on 6th November 2016.
    5. A Capital FM panel headed by Heather Kane, Head of Programming will score the entries on voice, music, arrangement, writing, entertainment value, creativity, and overall performance. Each entry will be allocated points on each criteria ranging from 1 for the lowest and 10 as the highest possible score. The ten highest scoring artists (in the event of a tie, Heather Kane will have the final decision) will then be put to a public Twitter vote using the hashtag #CapitalOneToWatch and hashtag # and the name of the artist/band as spelled, formatted and defined on the website. Voting rules as per number 7 below. The judges’ decision will be final. Voting scores will not be published, feedback will not be provided to unsuccessful entrants and no correspondence will be entered into.
    6. The three most popular artist/bands voted for in the Twitter vote will then be put forward to an industry panel of judges, and will be judged by them on the same criteria as above (No.4), the highest scoring artist will become the winner. The judges’ decision will be final. Voting scores will not be published, feedback will not be provided to unsuccessful entrants and no correspondence will be entered into.
    7. Once the Twitter voting has closed, the three finalists will be contacted by telephone by a Capital representative by 6pm 15th November.
    8. Judging of the three most voted for artists/band will take place on 17th/18th of November 2016. The Judges’ decision is final and in the event of a tie, In the event of a tie, Heather Kane will make the final decision.
    9. Voting mechanic
    10. Three finalists will be chosen from the ten artists/bands selected by the Capital FM Panel by public votes via the social media site Twitter using #CapitalOneToWatch followed by a hashtag (#) and the name of the artist as spelled, formatted and defined on the website. The three artists/bands with the highest number of votes will become finalists.
    11. The only way to vote is via Twitter.
    12. Only voting from only Twitter accounts which are public will be counted.
    13. Only 1 vote per Twitter account will be counted. Retweets will not be counted.
    14. Entrants may undertake their own promotional activity in order to solicit or encourage public votes, but we will not allow behaviour that, in our sole judgement, we consider constitutes unfair manipulation or distortion of the vote. Such behaviour will include, but is not limited to, purchasing of votes, either directly or via third-party agents; or the creation or use, whether manually or via automated systems, of large numbers of new or 'fake' Twitter accounts solely for the purpose of voting in this competition. Where we believe unfair manipulation of the vote has taken place, whether or not conducted by the entrant, we may, at our sole discretion, choose to reduce the number of eligible votes for the relevant act or disqualify them from the competition altogether.
    15. Voting will begin at 10:00 on 8th November and close at 12:00 on 15th November 2016.
    16. The three finalists will be announced on-air on the 16th November 2016 and be informed by a telephone call on this date too.
    17.     18. Eligibility:
    19. Entrants must be age 16 or over and must reside or have their main place of work or are studying within the defined Service Area of Capital FM Scotland.

      The Radio Station’s decision on eligibility is final. Entrants may ask to confirm their eligibility before submitting their entry.
    20. Entrants must never have been signed to a recording label nor major music management company. Solos, Duet/Trios and Bands are all acceptable for entry and they will compete against each other within the specified judging criteria.
    21. Although original artist music is welcome please be aware that only popular music genres relevant and similar to the Capital brand mainstream playlist will be considered for entry to this competition. For details go to http://www.capitalfm.com/on-air/playlist/
      Songs should also be suitable for broadcast, with no or minimal editing, during daytime on a UK radio station. Songs should therefore avoid offensive language, overt political or religious messages, commercial references, or references to living or recently deceased individuals, or organisations.
    22. Entrants must be available on Saturday 26th November 2016 to fulfill prize element of performing at the The Nordoff Robbins Scottish Music Awards - Tartan Clef Awards at The Old Fruit Market, Glasgow. If under 18, must be accompanied by a parent/guardian to any event associated with this competition. No additional guests will be given entry to the event
    23. Entrants must be available for a sound check & rehearsals for the above event between 8am and 6pm on Saturday 26th November at The Old Fruitmarket, Glasgow. Final timings will be confirmed by event organiser. A full back-line will be provided by organisers. The winning act is responsible for all other requirements to be able to perform.
    24. Entrants must be available to perform at least a 2 track acoustic / stripped back set at a promotional event on the evening of Wednesday 16th November 2016 at Rox Store, at either Buchanan Street, Glasgow, or George St Edinburgh). Only a P.A will be provided here; artists are responsible for all other requirements to be able to perform. No additional guests will be given entry to the event.
    25. Entrants will be required to participate in relevant publicity, PR and marketing opportunities as deemed appropriate by Capital FM’s Head of Programming in relation to the One to Watch Competition for a period of up to 12 months after winning date.
    26. Entry is restricted to one entry per artist; duplicate entries will be excluded from the Competition.
    27. Winning Artist Prize:
    28. The overall winner shall take to the stage to perform 1 track at the Tartan Clef Awards on Saturday 26th November 2016 at The Old Fruitmarket, Glasgow.
      Perform an intimate gig at Capital FM’s Starsuite within the SSE Hydro within 12 months of winning date.
      Each member of winning act, up to a maximum of 5, will win a Raymond Weil watch to the value of £2,500 from the current collection.
    29. Public Vote/ Twitter Prize
    30. Entrants must be age 16 or over and be a UK resident.
    31. A winner will be randomly selected from those who participated in the hashtag voting mechanism and that person will win a Raymond Weil watch to the value of £1000 from the current collection. This will be dispatched within 30 days of being informed as winner.
    32. Communicorp UK reserves the right to substitute the prize with another prize at its absolute discretion.
