Darren Gallagher was born and currently lives in Co. Donegal, Ireland. Having dropped out of school at fourteen, he decided in 2008 to finally pluck up the courage and follow a dream that had been haunting him since childhood. Receiving a Diploma in Creative Writing from Kilroy's College in Dublin was the first step in re-learning the English that he'd forgotten, and that he never knew. A natural night owl, when everyone else is sleeping, he hears the bumps and creaks, captures them, and turns them into stories to make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.

Strings is a collection of short stories like no other. 33 roller coasting, spin chilling tales that will leave you both shaking in your boots and asking for more. The characters are original, well written and so believable you'll sleep with the lights on from now on. If horror, tension, fantasy and fiction are your life's little pleasures then you wont be dissapointed.
Firstly, I will start my review by saying that I’m not the world’s biggest fan of short stories and secondly, I've fallen off the ‘fiction band wagon’ these past few years due to a busy work schedule and study. Also, the surge of so called ‘popular’ fiction books has not reignited my fire. However, I was a big horror book fan and Stephen King fan in my late teens so I was keen to dip my toes back into it and this book afforded me an excellent opportunity to do so. For that opportunity alone, it gets an immediate thumbs up!
The key core strength of Strings as I see it, is the authors ability to write interesting, imaginative, yet completely earthed stories across a wide plethora of genres with the category of fiction writing i.e. Supernatural, horror, fantasy etc. The book is a complete mixed bag of tricks which I loved and if your imagination is a fertile as mine, then the hamster within will well and truly run off his trundle wheel! There is everything from vampires, werewolves, ghosts, fairies etc. If you’ve jumped off the ‘fiction ship’ recently or become disillusioned with the ‘popular fiction bus’ then this really is the book to whet your appetite back into the different genres of fiction. The author’s ability to conjure up such imaginative and vivid stories from simple, basic everyday life events is very skilful e.g. walking a dog, hiking up a hill etc. His ability to move from such earthed simplicity to ingenious writing is very compelling.
On the con side of Strings, I would argue that some of the stories are far too short and they ended far too abruptly in my opinion which left me reeling in that halfway house of combined pleasure and pain but that’s not necessarily a bad thing, is it?
I feel that Strings is the start of a great journey for the author. The book clearly shows the huge potential that lies within the author to write across such a wide variety of genres under the ‘fiction umbrella’ in such an imaginative, fearless yet earthed way. I think there’s a lot more to come here and I look forward to reading more unconstrained work from the author, in particular some longer stories or a novel!
This was a fun, fast paced read. It was impossible to read just one short story in one sitting. The Author has a great imagination and ability to describe things. I was able to visualize each setting perfectly. I recommend this book to anyone
