Earagail

All Roads Lead to Donegal as Earagail Arts Festival programme is launched Earagail, Ireland : 12-27 July : www.eaf.ie TICKETS! @ http://www.eaf.ie/booking-info/

There are well documented long-standing connections that link Scottish traditional music - and fiddle styles in particular - with that north west corner of Ireland known as Donegal. When renowned Co Donegal trio Fidil took part in a recent documentary that examined the subject and the film was televised by BBC Alba, they revealed that not long ago, many ordinary men and women in Co Donegal actually felt so strongly connected to Scotland that they considered Glasgow to be their capital city in place of Dublin.

Those links are still very much alive in 2014. Each day, for instance, a bus departs from Letterkenny with its destination board showing Glasgow, and of course, a similar service makes the same return journey. The busiest time of the year for that particular coach service is undoubtedly July when the hugely-popular Earagail Arts Festival stages a colourful and world class programme of music, theatre, arts, crafts - and exploration of the great outdoors - mounted throughout the community with events happening in a host of towns, villages and rural settings - including offshore attractions. This year's event, possibly the most adventurous yet, will run from July 12 to 27 and the promised "something to suit all tastes" variety doesn't disappoint. Heading the music programme is a stunning bill that features three of Ireland's most celebrated female performers, Sharon Shannon, Frances Black and Mary Coughlan alongside Co Donegal's hottest new roots music exports The Henry Girls, in concert in Letterkenny, on July 13. Another event that is certain to pull a capacity crowd is the closing Gala Night Donegal Master Fiddlers' performance that will showcase the talents of three of the region's greatest living

trad players - Vincent Campbell, Dinny McLaughlin and Danny Meehan - on stage with a cream-of-the-crop line-up of new generation talent, including the band, Fidil. Two self-contained mini festivals within the main programme will focus on both local and visiting attractions, with The Swell music and arts festival, set over three days (July 11 to 13) on the beautiful Isle of Arranmore, laying on a superb selection of events from trad music concerts and sessions to indigenous storytelling and poetry readings, craft workshops and Atlantic seascape walks. The west Donegal Gaeltacht village of Falcarragh, meanwhile, will host a weekend of singing, dancing and merriment with a host of local and visiting acts at various venues, the Fianna Phadraig Irish Pipe Band in attendance and a range of arts, crafts and sculpture workshops (July 18 to 20). Other musical highlights throughout the wider programme include performances by remarkable Tuareg guitarist and singer, "Bombino"; virtuoso guitarist and composer Eduardo Niebla, acclaimed as one of the most potent forces in flamenco jazz fusion; rising folk star Emily Portman with her trio and barnstorming Galway livewires, We Banjo 3.
