Scarlett Johansson Cast in New John Carney Movie Musical 'Can a Song Save Your Life?'

John Carney, the writer/director behind 'Once,' has another movie musical in the works. Entitled 'Can a Song Save Your Life,' the new film will be produced by Judd Apatow (The Cable Guy, Bridesmaids) and will star at least one heavyweight Hollywood actress: Scarlett Johansson has signed onto the project according to Sunday Business Post.

Johansson's film credits include "The Horse Whisperer," "Lost in Translation," "Girl with a Pearl Earring," "The Black Dahlia," "The Other Boleyn Girl" and "Vicky Cristina Barcelona." Johansson appeared as Catherine in the 2010 Broadway revival of A VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE, for which she was awarded a Tony.

"I've been writing it for a year and a half," Carney told Sunday Business Post. "I went out to Los Angeles to meet Scarlett a couple of months ago. She was everything you could imagine - very hot, elegant and she's really smart."

Carney's 2006 film ONCE will receive a stage adaptation at New York Theater Workshop in November, and a Broadway run is still a possibility after the downtown production.

Musicians Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, who played the lead characters in the film as well as won an Academy Award for one of the films' original songs, "Falling Slowly," have written the music and lyrics for the musical. Playwright Enda Walsh wrote the book. The Off-Broadway production will be directed by John Tiffany and choreographed by Steven Hoggett.
