SBBA receives £125k youth funding award The Scottish Brass Band Association (SBBA) has been awarded more than £125,000 of funding from the Scottish Government's Youth Music Initiative (YMI) as one of the recipients of the £1.1 million of funding recently announced.

“Participation in arts and culture can help young people realise their ambitions, wherever they lie. This can have huge benefits, and must be a priority, even in difficult financial times.

Carrie Boax, SBBA president, commented: "I'm delighted that the Scottish Brass Band Association has been awarded the maximum amount of funding, highlighting the confidence that exists in our youth development strategy.

Raymond Black, youth music manager at Creative Scotland, said: “Creative learning underpins Creative Scotland’s commitment to ensuring that everyone can access and enjoy artistic creative experiences whoever they are, wherever they are from and at any stage in their life. YMI has given thousands of young people across Scotland the opportunity to learn about and enjoy music making activities.

DROPKICK

"The funding award will enable us to widen the opportunities which are available to young brass and percussion players. It will help establish new youth brass bands throughout Scotland and in doing so, give young people an opportunity to learn skills which will stand them in good stead for the rest of their lives."

Other recipients of £1.1 million YMI funding include Sistema Scotland, the National Piping Centre, Reeltime Music, Sound Waves and Hazelwood Vision. Confirmation of the award came as representatives from a wide variety of arts organisations gathered at The Platform in Easterhouse, Glasgow, where a speech was made by culture secretary, Fiona Hyslop. Fiona Hyslop said: “I want culture to be for all young people because all young people deserve to experience the joy and happiness that experience and performance in the arts can bring.

“This government supports young people and recognises the role youth arts play both as a platform to develop skills for the future and to tackle inequalities."

"Taking part in musical activities can make a real difference to the lives of children and young people, as well as being fun and enjoyable, communications skills, confidence and self-esteem are developed and enhanced whilst also creating career pathways for Scotland’s young talent. "Our continued strong partnership with all thirty two of Scotland’s local authorities enables the YMI to have a truly national reach. This partnership working ensures more children from all backgrounds, in all parts of Scotland, have an equal chance to develop and achieve their potential.

CLAIRE HASTINGS

Musicians' Union declares support for staying in Europe The Musicians’ Union (MU) has reaffirmed its support for Britain remaining part of the European Union. For musicians, the benefits of Britain staying in the EU are numerous. Open borders make touring both easier and less expensive, EU health and safety legislation has meant that the job of being a musician has become safer and workers’ rights legislation in general has improved the working life of musicians in the UK. The Working Time Directive, for instance, redefined the definition of a worker for the purposes of working time and meant that for

the first time we were able to claim holiday pay for part-time instrumental teachers. Perhaps most importantly, at least three European Copyright Directives have been responsible for protecting the intellectual property rights of our members and ensuring that they receive remuneration for the use of their work. Whilst the copyright regime in this country is far from perfect, and further adjustments are urgently needed, the MU is confident that the situation for musicians would be far worse were it not for the EU Directives. The effect that Brexit would have on musicians in Britain is not entirely clear and would depend on the terms negotiated. We could expect touring to become more difficult and potentially see British musicians having to apply for visas in order to travel within Europe. Given the cost and difficulty many musicians face in obtaining visas for work in countries such as the U.S, this would be very unwelcome. It is also likely that European legislation which has protected musicians in the areas of copyright, health and safety and workers’ rights would be watered down or removed entirely if Britain were to leave the EU.

DROPKICK :: album :: 'Balance The Light' release date - out now @ www.dropkickmusic.co.uk

Hailing from the east of Scotland, Dropkick have drawn on influences such as Wilco, Tom Petty and The Everly Brothers to produce their own blend of harmony-driven altcounty powerpop.

critically acclaimed album ‘Patchwork’. This was followed by a further 3 albums and 1 EP over the next four years. In 2013, Dropkick released the ‘Homeward’ which was well received and was also been licensed for release in Spain on the Discos Bobo Integral label. The album saw Dropkick expand to a 5 piece line up for the first time, allowing the band to explore new sounds, showcasing organ and synths, creating a richer production with more sonic depth than previous releases. In 2014, Dropkick revived their relationship with Spanish label, Rock Indiana Records, to release a compilation of tracks from their earlier, hard to find, albums. The compilation, ‘Good Vibes: The Dropkick Songbook Vol.1’ was released specifically to coincide with a highly successful, headline tour of Spain.

‘Balance The Light’ is Dropkick’s most accomplished and creative collection of songs to date, demonstrating a growing maturity and confidence in their songwriting and arrangements. ‘Balance The Light’ showcases the ear for melody and harmony that has helped Dropkick’s music appeal to a growing band of fans around the world and is their most varied album of material to date. PAUL TASKER

DAVID ALTAIR

Human Condition

Cold Weather Music

B-Sides

This is Doghouse Roses' guitarist Paul Tasker's first solo album. An all instrumental album peformed on fingerstyle guitar and clawhammer banjo with flute, flatpicked guitar, cello, pedal steel guitar and percussion. The 10 tracks are musical responses to both real life and imagined events and largely have a folk or old time Americana feel, but with 2 guitar duets adding a jazz tinge.

David Altair has just released his 6th album entitled ‘B-Sides’. This is some work that was previously never released and is quite rare. The album has quite a psychedelic feel to it especially ‘we can’t stop now (the Wall)’. The album flows into a journey of ambient sounds and experimentation.

Down The Line

Igor Stravinsky: The Rite of Spring Open Airs Album cd / download Release Date: Out Now

Album cd / download Release Date: Out Now

Down The Line is the new album from Glasgow-born singer/ songwriter Johny Corrigan. It is the much-anticipated follow-up to Johny’s acclaimed debut Inchfad Drive, released in 2013. The album consists entirely of self-penned songs and Johny has recruited an impressive line-up of artists for the recording.

This stunning reworking for jazz octet of Igor Stravinsky's masterwork retains all of the themes and most of the exquisite orchestration of the original composition. Improvisational sections appear organically out of Stravinsky's score, allowing band members to be featured as individual soloists as the piece unfolds. With personnel drawn from Scotland, England and Germany, this international group is a world-class ensemble, completely at ease with each other and this incredibly complex music.

Open Airs is a musical log book of travels in Norway, Ireland and Scotland. In 2011, Norwegian musician and composer Kyrre Slind quite his job, bought a banjo and hit the road on a Vespa 125 scooter, heading for Ireland. Four years later - rich in new experiences - he releases his first solo album, recorded in Scotland and Norway. The melodies describe landscapes, impressions and personalities encountered when travelling the great north and its islands.
