THE ZENITH COMPLEX

The Violent Whispers are a five-piece alternate rock band hailing from Dundee and this is their debut album. With four songwriters in the band all drawing from different influences, the musical mix is eclectic and original!

Record Store Day came into being in 2007 when over 700 independent stores in the USA came together to celebrate their unique culture. The UK followed suit and 2015 will see the eighth celebration of the UK's unique independent sector. This is the one-day that all of the independently owned record shops come together with artists to celebrate the art of music. Special vinyl and CD releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day and hundreds of artists across the globe make special appearances and performances. Festivities include performances, meet & greets with artists, DJ's, in store quizzes and many other events. There are over 550 releases exclusive to independent record shops and special events and performances taking place all across the country.

Number of independent record shops reaches a 5-year high Experiential shops and mixing old and new key to success The rate of independent record shop openings is on the rise as more than 40 new shops have opened in UK high streets in the last 5 years. The most dramatic increase came in 2014, with more than 50% of openings occurring in the last 12 months alone. The upsurge comes hand in hand with the recent revival of vinyl sales. For 2015, Q1 sales of vinyl albums are already up 74% on the previous year and are showing no sign of slowing down as this year’s Record Store Day is just around the corner.

Customer experience is Key www.thezenithcomplex.com

Anomaly features four high energy rock tracks that not only incorporate electronic elements but also showcase the band's penchant for heavy riffs, punchy drums and hooky choruses. Released on Razor Edge Records.

A key driving force behind the success of these new retailers stems from the innovative experiential factor that stores are able to offer both the dedicated music fan and the casual buyer. In recent years, stores have added pies, books, coffee shops and gig stages to the high street.

Sales up almost 800% in 5 years

BLUEFLINT

The revival of vinyl at retail has seen a huge jump in sales value since 2008. The total vinyl album market stood at just £3.3m in 2009 and by 2014 had increased to £25.9 million. Check out your local participating record shop @ www.recordstoreday.co.uk/participating-stores/

Aberdeen's 'Almost Blue Promotions' begin a new season of bringing top acts to the North East for 2015 Check out all the Almost Blue Promotions gig announcements @ www.almostbluepromotions.com/#!gigs/c1znh Buy tickets with no booking fee @ www.almostbluepromotions.com/#!buy-tickets/cq91 Almost Blue Promotions was set up in 2013 with the aim of bringing quality country music gigs to Aberdeen, ran by Martin Raitt they book all types from Alt Country, Americana, Bluegrass, Cajun, Folk, Rockabilly, Honky Tonk, Singer/ Songwriter and any twists inbetween! Their name comes from the 1981 Elvis Costello album 'Almost Blue' which was recorded by Elvis Costello and the Attractions in Nashville. It originally appeared with a warning label that read: "WARNING: This album contains country & western music and may cause offence to narrow minded listeners."

Country and Americana ever recorded but on his first solo album for five years, ‘Good-bye Lizelle,’ Olson strikes out in an altogether different direction, resulting in songs that prove both poetic and mystical. Supporting Mark is Colin Clyne - a native of Stonehaven, Clyne recently ended a 10 year stay in Southern California where he had a sizeable following to return home. Colin's latest album 'The Never Ending Pageant' garnered both critical and chart success. Following this on 6 May they have CAHALEN MORRISON & ELI

WEST. These are simply two of the most innovative and subtle roots musicians today. Their music draws from old folk sources, but it sounds vibrantly alive. Cahalen Morrison writes songs that sound like a Cormac McCarthy novel: simple, beautifully crafted, and seemingly formed from raw natural elements. Eli West brings jagged, angular arrangements based in bluegrass and old-time, but refracted through a 21st century lens. Like Ansel Adams’ photography, their music is instantly accessible and built from the simplest materials, but at the

same time seems to transcend its base fundamentals. Some other highlights coming up in the year are JP HARRIS & THE TOUGH CHOICES (23 May); THE RED DIRT SKINNERS (7th August); GREG TROOPER (22nd Sept); and BEN ROGERS (23 Oct). A fantastic new ticket offer is with the new Almost Blue Loyalty Card with which you can get 5 shows for only £30! Individual tickets are normally £10 each. Keep in touch with their sites below for the latest news.

Getting 2015 underway for Almost Blue Promotions on 26 April in Gallowgate's Blue Lamp is MARK OLSON with support from Stonehaven's COLIN CLYNE. Mark Olson was a founding member of the highly influential Americana / alt.country band The Jayhawks. With his recent work In the Wake of Neil Gunn garnering rave reviews, Mike Vass' ascending reputation as composer and arranger – in the The Guardian’s words, “a classy, thoughtful musician” with “a great ear for atmosphere” - is showcased through his contribution of original tunes and delicate orchestration underpinning the songs with characteristic charm and expression, both on fiddle and tenor guitar, introduced to the Malinky mix for the first time, alongside Hunter’s cello, Byrne’s bouzouki, guitars, harmonica and jew’s harp, and Dunlop’s flute, whistles and bodhrán. All the while a sense of place exudes, resonating with the individual and collective backgrounds of a band at home with itself, none more so than in Byrne’s rendition of the Angus classic The Wild Geese, from the pen of Violet Jacob and Jim Reid, rounding off a thoroughly modern take on the Scots song tradition - in rude health in Malinky’s hands. Since forming out of the Edinburgh session scene of the late '90s Malinky has, for the past 15 years, been the leading group focusing on traditional Scots song. With four acclaimed albums under their belt and an extensive tour roster across the globe, Malinky has become one of the most distinctive and accomplished bands on the Scottish folk scene. 2015 finds the band emerging refreshed and renewed from an enforced touring and recording hiatus in recent years with their highly anticipated new release, Far Better Days.

MICHELLE BURKE : album : 'Step Into My Parlour' release date - 27 April : www.michelleburkemusic.com One day while Michelle and her sister Laura were having biscuits, cakes, club orange and chatting a mile to the dozen, they came up with a beguiling idea triggered by their recent discovery of their great grandmother’s dusty old scrapbook. It blossomed - and 'Step into my Parlour' was born.

Michelle’s ‘Parlour’ is very much inspired by all the characters, music and family gatherings that surrounded her growing up. The album takes its audience back to her great-grandmother's era, with a quirky mix of traditional and music-hall songs, plus a song in similar spirit by Edinburgh's Sandy Wright, Dublin Diner. Step into my Parlour started out as a duo performance by Michelle and long-term musical partner James Ross during a run at the 2012 Edinburgh Fringe Festival in the iconic Royal Oak bar. It has grown arms and legs in the course of subsequent stagings. The show featured as part of The Made in Scotland and Summerhall programme at the 2014 Edinburgh Fringe. Most recently the show featured in The Old Fruitmarket at Celtic Connections festival 2015 in Glasgow which surely sets a new record as the world's biggest parlour.

(Carolina Chocolate Drops & The New Basement Tapes) and Heidi Talbot. Produced by Calum Malcolm (Blue Nile) the album also features James Ross (piano), Anna Massie (guitar, mandolin and banjo), Brendan Power (harmonica), John Kenny (trombone), Kathleen Boyle (accordion) and Martin O' Neill (bodhran).

Burke hails originally from rural East Cork and since 2002 she has been based in Scotland, honing her craft in the thick of today’s dynamic Scottish folk scene. In April 2008, she signed up as lead singer with the long-established and illustrious outfit, Cherish the Ladies and spent two years touring extensively with them, singing to crowds of thousands across North America, Cathal McConnell (Boys of the Lough) has been a Alaska, Canada and Europe performing in art great inspiration, mentor and friend to Michelle centres and folk festivals. and has been a huge influence on this project, indeed Cathal joins Michelle on two songs on this To view the promo video for STEP INTO MY album Dan O’Hara and So Here’s To You. "The EP captures Josephine’s quirky style beautifully; a refreshing debut that makes her stand out from the crowd, certainly in these Northern plains anyway. Her music has a direct approach with the lyrics taking centre stage, wrapped in her accomplished almost Ben Folds style with a nod to Regina Spektor (who she has stated as being an influence). Tracks like You (Are Not The Reason), is a crushingly simple yet charming address to a former flame. If she can continue to go from strength to strength she is capable of delivering greatness. EP / download Release Date: Out Now David Knowles is a distinctive vocalist and songwriter based in Edinburgh, with a growing international social media following. Lyrically, David draws inspiration from classic writers including William Blake, Oscar Wilde, Jack Kerouac and Hunter Thompson. Years spent travelling the world (including Latin America, Asia and Europe) have provided a rich vein of inspiration for his songwriting and familiarity with a range of exotic instruments including the Didjeridoo, African Djembe drum and far eastern Dulcimer. With a depth and range that bely his relatively tender years, David’s voice has drawn favourable comparisons to such iconic performers as Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder and Grammy award-winning country singer Ray Lamontagne. Gràs (Grace)

Wasting Time

Yesteryear

Famed Gaelic songstress Mairi MacInnes presents Gràs (Grace), her first new album in 13 years! Some of the songs have been written by Mairi; others have been adapted from ancient Gaelic songs and prayers. Some take the form of mouth music, waulking and clapping songs, and hymns. Mairi’s fans have been patiently waiting for Gràs for over ten years, but it will be worth the wait.

Based in West Lothian, Scotland, The Phantoms formed in May 2012, quickly winning an army of fans with their huge sound and infectious on-stage energy. Influenced by Kasabian, Royal Blood, Catfish and the Bottlemen and Arctic Monkeys, their new single 'Wasting Time' is a perfect example of the sound that has earned The Phantoms the reputation as one of Scotland's most exciting prospects.

Uplifting vocals, intricate guitars, weaving violin melodies, solid bass lines and foot-stomping drum beats to form a unique take on Scottish folk music. "Yesteryear" combines Little Kingdom's cheerful folk with darker, alternative roots, giving a small taste of the band's vast palette of sounds.
