CoMA’s [Contemporary Music for All’s] celebration weekend in Edinburgh on Sunday 6 March takes place at the Tom Fleming Centre in Stewart’s Melville College from 5-6pm

Guest speakers, Alasdair Nicolson (composer and Artistic Director of St Magnus International Festival) and Jennifer Martin (composer and Chief Executive of the Hebrides Ensemble), will lead a discussion while sharing their experience of working with new music, as composers, educators, commissioners and programmers. Royal Conservatoire of Scotland welcomes launch of ‘Classical 100’, a free online resource bringing classical music to primary schools across Scotland Teachers in primary schools in Scotland will soon be able to ignite their pupils’ enthusiasm for classical music with a free online resource, Classical 100, which will be available for use in Scottish schools from 22 February. Complementing existing teaching resources, Classical 100 has been developed by ABRSM in partnership with Classic FM and Decca Classics. Scottish schools can gain full, unlimited access to Classical 100 by registering at www.abrsm.org/classical100 Classical 100 is built around 100 recordings of classical music pieces which teachers can draw upon in lessons, school assemblies and other school activities. Alongside a recording of each of the works taken from Decca’s world-renowned catalogue, there is information about the composer and the story behind the music. ABRSM will also draw on its network of primary school experts to create and publish a range of downloadable materials on the resource throughout the academic year, thereby helping teachers to bring the music to life in the classroom. To encourage pupils to explore, discover and listen to music – and ultimately to develop their own personal interests, tastes and talents – the 100 pieces embrace a rich diversity of styles ranging over ten centuries, (from Hildegard of Bingen to Graham Fitkin via JS Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Mozart, Tchaikovsky and more) and can be sorted according to a variety of criteria, such as mood, genre, country of origin or even when they

were written. Teachers can use the flexible resource to raise the energy levels by selecting Bernstein’s ‘Mambo’ from West Side Story, or encourage a moment of quiet reflection with Beethoven’s ‘Moonlight’ Sonata; if a class was, for example, exploring ‘story-telling’, the teacher could draw together learning across the curriculum around Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf. Classical 100 can also be used to meet some of the First level outcomes of Curriculum for Excellence being an appropriate resource particularly for EXA 1-19a, ‘I have listened to a range of music and can respond by discussing my thoughts and feelings’. For example, if a teacher wanted to exemplify music of a gentle, calm mood, Classical 100 would lead them to a list including Grieg’s ‘Morning Mood’ from Peer Gynt Suite, or if they were exploring energetic, dramatic music they could discover ‘O Fortuna’ from Orff’s Carmina Burana.

I love the selection of pieces, they’re really well thought out! There are some well-known pieces as well as some that aren’t as well-known. It can help children build their understanding of what was going on at different times in history.” The pieces of music were selected using Adaptive Comparative Judgement (ACJ) technology working in partnership with education tech provider, Digital Assess. The use of ACJ allowed the music to be judged and ranked according to its suitability for classroom scenarios using iteration and an adaptive algorithm. Classical 100 was developed by industry experts with a wealth of primary teaching knowledge and professional experience compiling syllabuses and other education materials and has been rigorously tested by a broad community of teachers, music services, and educational musical experts.

The UK’s largest ferry network operator, Caledonian MacBrayne, has picked up the inaugural Creative Business Award at the Arts and Business Scotland Awards - partly for its work supporting music in Scotland.

SILVER COAST

At a glittering ceremony in Edinburgh International Conference Centre, the ferry company’s CalMac Culture programme was recognised for its innovative stable of competitions – which includes CalMac Culture Music and Screen, and will add CalMac Culture Art this year.

“We did, however, work very closely with them throughout and received great support in return. They have since trusted us to deliver and we are pleased that we have, indeed, done that.” By 2015, another three festivals were on board as the competition grew in both reach and stature.

The 2016 edition of CalMac Culture is now open for entries, details at

www.calmac.co.uk/music As well as providing an exceptional opportunity for those who enter the competitions, CalMac Culture has highlighted the sheer diversity of the arts scene across the west Highlands and islands and this has brought with it an often new and younger audience. “We are delighted to have been given this award,” continued Peter. “It is recognition not just for our team which works so hard on it, but also for the faith event organisers have had in us and for all those who enter the competition.”

This EP has been a long time coming. There were a lot of different emotions present when it was written and the songs can relate to a number of different situations in people's life's. Silver Coast say "We are so proud of this!"

Each strand in this cultural stable works on a simple premise – offer talented newcomers an opportunity which, for most, would be out of reach. In the case of CalMac Culture Music, would-be singer/songwriters or bands are given the chance of winning a half hour slot at one of a number of major festivals across Scotland’s west coast. In the case of CalMac Culture Screen, the winner is able to work with a top-flight film studio to broaden their skills.

“We had been a sponsor for both Tiree Music Festival and Hebridean Celtic Festival for a number of years,” explained Marketing Manager Peter Griffiths. “So we did know the organisers reasonably well. But that doesn’t mean that it was all plain sailing when we went to them in 2014 with the CalMac Culture Music idea.

Stirling's 'Strange Behaviours' presents…

Hector Bizerk The Tolbooth’s monthly new music night ‘Strange Behaviours’ returns for 2016 on 27 February, bringing through one of Scottish indie’s most compelling and thrilling live acts ..... Hector Bizerk After the buzz and mayhem of ‘Strange Behaviours Festival’ at the tail end of 2015 (20+ live acts and secret sets spread over 3 stages and 2 days at the Tolbooth), the monthly ‘Strange Behaviours’ night returns with one of Scotland’s most talked about emerging acts. Hector Bizerk are a hip hop band and creative juggernaut. Led by founding members Louie (emcee) and Audrey (drummer/producer), they

burn through bucket-lists at an alarming rate, opening for the likes of Public Enemy / Wu Tang Clan / Jurassic 5 / Alt-J / Immortal Technique without losing a bit of momentum. A Scottish Album Of The Year award nomination for ‘Nobody Seen Nothin’ was followed by 4 themed EPs in 12 months, a short film, and a place at this year’s South By South-West Festival in Austin, Texas.

founding principle of hip hop’s ‘4 Elements’ (rap, dance, graffiti and turntablism) sees their electrifying live show take a multi-discipline arts slant, where band members are flanked by bboy dancer Ibby and live graffiti artist Pearl Kinnear.

As a group of artists passionate about the positive force of true hip hop culture, the band are also hosting a special 2-day workshop at the They don’t stop there however, their belief in the Tolbooth on Thursday 11th and Friday 12th of February, introducing you to lyric writing, rap, dance, graffiti art and digital music making. Titled ‘The 4 Elements’ , this is an opportunity to try your hand at a range of skills. Music Development Officer at the Tolbooth, Kenny Bates: “Unpredictable and literally breath-taking, they blew the roof off of 2014’s Strange Behaviours Festival, so we’re really excited to see them coming back through to Stirling. Their songwriting and witty, profound lyricism sends shivers down your spine, and their live show creates a totally effortless party atmosphere it’s hard not to get caught up in. I’m really excited about the ‘4 Elements’ hip hop workshop too – this is the first time we’ve extended our songwriting and music making activities into the world of hip hop, so I can’t wait to meet those keen to follow their passion for this style of music.” GIGnotes:

An Aberdeen woman whose career was kick started by playing the bagpipes has said the launch of the 'Bagpipe Amnesty' to provide pipes for school children is music to her ears – and she has donated three sets to the cause. Lyndsey Spiers, born and bred in Aberdeen, was offered the job of typist at the age of just 16, after her future employer learned she was part of a pipe band. The company believed the hobby taught discipline and integrity and now she wants to give children the opportunity to learn the same skills. After hearing about the Scottish Schools Pipes and Drums Trust’s Bagpipe Amnesty on social media, the 42 year old, who is now a Secretary at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, arranged for her beloved pipes to be handed over. Ashton Lane is set to wow music fans as they head to London next month to grace the stage of The 02. The Glasgow band will be performing at the famous 'Country 2 Country' Festival after the release of their latest single One Kiss Later.

The talented duo are no strangers to the country music scene, having played in Nashville and their most recent album Nashville Heart was well received on both sides of the Atlantic. “I really like their sound…very Lady Antebellum. A Scottish counterpart who can do it just as good” - Brian Clough Smooth Radio/American Connection The band has a romantic back story, being husband and wife and also come from fine musical stock. Esther O’Connor’s musical heritage however spans right back to her childhood. She remembers being out on tour at only five years of age with Elton John on his US tour accompanying her Dad’s band Wet Wet Wet. “The excitement of the live shows and a love of travelling got under my skin very early” says O’Connor. “I loved everything from the hotels, to turning up at the venues for sound checks …and the catering. It was all great fun from start to finish, and I definitely got bitten by the bug!” Esther O’Connor, Ashton Lane Ashton Lane are part of a new wave of homegrown modern country music originating in the UK and are sure to expand their growing fan base this year. The single One Kiss Later is out on 29 February 2016 Ashton Lane consist of Esther O’Connor and Tim O’Connor. The band performs as a duo but at times as a three piece when Graeme Duffin (Wet Wet Wet) joins them as guest guitarist. GIGnotes: 12 March, Country 2 Country, Brooklyn Bowl, The 02, London / 13

A NIGHT WITH ..... Glasgow’s newest music series, with a twist @ The Hug and Pint on 12 April and 10 May - www.thenightwith.co.uk

The Night With… is a new series of salon style concerts presenting classical and new music in an informal environment with performances by some of Scotland’s top musicians.

Featuring Red Note and Electric Clarinet this new series of concerts will move music out of the concert hall and into a relaxed environment. Programmed by composer Matthew Whiteside the concerts will feature an eclectic mix of old and new. Opening with Red Note performing music for solo brass, trio and electronics (trumpet - Mark O’Keeffe, trombone - Simon Johnson, horn – Chris Gogh, electronics – Timothy Cooper). This concert will feature music by Handel, Messiaen, John Cage and Harvey. The second concert will feature Electric Clarinet performing music for clarinet and electronics by composers including Eddie McGuire, Monty Adkins and Matthew Whiteside. Electric Clarinet, formed in 2014, is a collaboration between Joanna Nicholson (clarinets) and Matthew Whiteside (composer and electronics) to perform new music for clarinets with electronics. Supported by the National Lottery through Creative Scotland’s Open Project Fund, the concerts promise to be an intriguing evening of

music. Matthew Whiteside, Composer and Head of Programming, The Night With said: ‘I want people to experience and enjoy all music as music rather than have a separate series for new and old. In these concerts I’ve programmed a mix that will be in four short 15 minute sections giving the audience a chance to chat to the players, each other and any of the composers that are there. I want to establish this as a monthly series and commission some new works as well’. Clare Hewitt, Music Officer at Creative Scotland said: “Creative Scotland is delighted to support Matthew Whiteside’s initiative to present high quality new music in a new environment. We hope that the project will give members of the public the opportunity to hear and experience music and musicians that are new to them, and to get closer to the richness of Scotland’s contemporary musical culture.” Tickets available on the door, from the Hug and Pint and from www.thenightwith.co.uk Two concerts - £15 / Full price - £8 / Student/ Disabled/Unwaged/Senior/NMS Member - £5 GIGnotes: 12 April: The Night With… Red Note

Summerland are a hard-gigging band that are delighting ever larger live audiences with their songs of love and loss, longing and rejection. Sophie Armstrong, a shepherdess working in the wilds of Northumberland by day, has an extraordinary voice that soars, yet offers vulnerability and clarity too. At her side stands Gary Shearer, a guitarist of impressive ability whose musical tastes know no bounds. Together they’ve crafted a set list of original, heartfelt songs. This is music that is both contemporary and timeless.

David Altair releases his fourth album entitled ‘Movies’. This album is more beat driven than his last mainly instrumental albums. The album has an ambient and progressive feel to it drawing on inspiration from Boards of Canada. David has released the album for download on Bandcamp. Shattered Echoes

Glasgow Jazz singer Eddie Toal has released a CD as a tribute to his wife Irene who always wanted him to make a recording. Sadly, Irene will never hear it. She died from Breast Cancer four years ago aged just 48. Irene’s dying wish was to help other patients at the Beatson Cancer Centre where she was treated. So Eddie (66) is donating all the proceeds from his recording to the Beatson Cancer Charity and hopes to raise thousands of pounds. “It’s not exactly the Taj Mahal but it’s the best I can do to remember her” says Eddie, an exrailwayman and semi-professional singer. “Irene used to nag me about making a recording of old songs that we both loved but I just never got around to it. Well, now I have and it’s for a great cause.”

‘Newly minted psychedelic’ band from Glasgow have their debut self-titled EP released on infamous student run record label Electric Honey. Brothers Kris and Pete have encapsulated all that is great about psychedelic, garage, rock and pop music into this record. A perfectly balanced EP.

Foxbeef: Powerful, melodic, hard rock with grunge sensibilities. Foxbeef released their début album Shattered Echoes on the 27 June, 2015. The drums were recorded at TPot Studios in Kinross with Robin Wynn Evans, whose credits include The Manic Street Preachers & The View. The band took on the responsibility to record and produce the rest of the album themselves, working as hard as they could over the course of a year to get the album to a place that reflected the bands personality and energy.
