HAMISH:

The story of folk music icon Hamish Henderson Many lives - Many Voices - One Man

the mns collection ….

Glasgow : 23 + 24 February : www.glasgowfilm.org 'GFF' TICKETS @ www.glasgowfilm.org Robbie Fraser's highlyanticipated documentary HAMISH tells the story of Hamish Henderson (19192002) - a colossal figure in Scottish culture, a man of boundless passion and curiosity whose poems continue to elevate and inspire a nation. HAMISH pays tribute to the many contrary forces and diverse facets of Henderson’s life as a poet, soldier, intellectual, activist, songwriter and leading force in the revival of Scottish folk music. The world premiere is on the 23 February as part of the Glasgow Film Festival at Glasgow Film Theatre at 6pm and will include a musical overture featuring two of Scotland’s most respected singers, Adam McNaughton and Siobhan Miller, in association with Celtic Connections - with another screening at GFT on the 24th. 14 years in the making, this heartfelt tribute to one of Scotland's proudest sons weaves golden archive footage with the loving testimony of Henderson's family and colleagues. While a student Hamish visited Germany and helped rufugees escape the Nazis. His experience of war was a catalyst for his poem 'Elegies For The Dead In Cyrenaica' for which he received the 'Somerset Maugham Award' in 1949. Hamish became an integral part of the folk movement when he accompanied the American folklorist Alan Lomax on a collection tour of Scotland. He then became a permanent member of staff at the School of Scottish Studies.

Hamish helped establish the Edinburgh People's Festival in 1951. It put traditional Scottish folk music on a public stage for the first time and arguably evolved into the renowned Edinburgh Fringe as we know it today.

Countdown begins to Dumfries and Galloway Arts Festival programme launch Dumfries and Galloway : 20-29 May : www.dgartsfestival.org.uk 'D&G ART FESTIVAL' TICKETS @ www.dgartsfestival.org.uk/how-to-book/

On Wednesday, 2 March, Scotland’s biggest and brightest rural performing arts festival will reveal its most ambitious and exciting programme to date. And then tickets go on sale on Tuesday, 15 March for the 85 events in 48 venues of the 37th Dumfries and Galloway Arts Festival which takes place from 20 to 29 May. Festival chair, Ken Gouge, said: “This year’s programme is the largest and most diverse in the festival’s history. We are building on our unparalleled success of last year, which saw ticket income soar by 60 per cent and audiences grow by 47 per cent on 2014. These increases can be put down to our strategy of working more closely with promoters, venue managers and performing artists across the region. Last year’s festival also involved around 500 young people who attended shows, masterclasses and workshops run by visiting performing artists. Youngsters also took the opportunity of planning and promoting their own events. We have the generosity of the Holywood Trust to thank for being able to offer these opportunities to the younger members of our communities and, owing to the trust’s on-going support, we can continue to roll out this programme for 2016 and involve young people in performing arts.”

Festival programme director, Peter Renwick, said: “We have some really extra special events booked for this year, some of which are unique to the festival. We are very excited by some of the contemporary folk music on offer, Highlights for 2016 include the notable Songs of Separation. The performance is the culmination of a project that brought together 10 female folk musicians from Scotland and England on the Isle of Eigg to create a programme inspired by 2014’s Scotland Referendum and reflecting on the issue of separation in all its forms. The musicians, amongst the most well-respected folk singers in the UK, are Eliza Carthy, Karine Polwart, Rowan Rheingans, Mary Macmaster, Hannah Read, Kate Young, Jenn Butterworth, Hazel Askew, Hannah James and Jenny Hill."
