MUSIC FESTIVALS - MUSIC FESTIVALS - MUSIC FESTIVALS - MUSIC FESTIVALS Glasgow Film Festival:

Where You're Meant To Be starring Sheila Stewart and Aidan Moffat Glasgow Film Theatre : 24 February : www.glasgowfilm.org TICKETS @ www.glasgowfilm.org Glasgow’s legendary venue Barrowland Ballroom turns into a cinema for the premiere of a journey through music, place and time with two of Scotland's most distinctive voices.

Aidan Moffat as 'The Bruce' in 'Where You're Meant To Be'.

The film, accompanied by a live set from the former Arab Strap frontman Aidan Moffat and friends, will subsequently tour Scotland in Spring 2016. The premier on 19 February is sold out but tickets are still available for the second Glasgow Film Festival screening (with a Q&A with Aidan Moffat) on 24 February at 1.30pm at Glasgow Film Theatre. In the spring of 2014, Scottish cultpop raconteur Aidan Moffat and award-winning film-maker Paul Fegan made plans to tour the length of Scotland – to socialise with local characters, carouse into the early hours, and explore the country's music traditions as part of a folkloric pop voyage called Where You're Meant To Be. It was meant to be the basis for a film depicting Moffat's road trip. It was meant to be a film that celebrated Scotland's communities and lore, as the former Arab Strap frontman toured his modern reinterpretations of old folk songs. But just before they hit the road, Fegan and Moffat met Sheila Stewart: a 79-year-old force of nature, the last in a line of travelling folk royalty, and a balladeer whose life – and unexpected death in December last year – upturned Moffat's folk assumptions, and diverted the course of Fegan's film.

The ensuing film, Where You're Meant To Be, is a warm-hearted and open-armed journey through Scottish music, landscape and time. It's also a moving, wry and enlightening depiction of two of our country's most distinct and vital voices, as they cross paths (and words): Moffat believes Scotland's oldest songs are ripe for re-working against a contemporary urban backdrop. Stewart does not. Following Moffat's initial encounter with Stewart last spring, and with her wrath ringing in his ears, we see him embark on a trip around Scotland's remote parts with his band in tow, to immerse himself, and his bawdy muse, in folk clubs, gatherings, our oldest songs. He encounters myriad colourful myths and characters along the way: feuding monster hunters at Loch

Ness; a heartbroken crofter singing at his kitchen table on the Isle of Skye; a gaggle of chain-mail clad warriors, re-animating history in a village cemetery outside Oban; and many folk singers, folk tales, folk songs.

which is why I agreed to it. But somehow I ended up dressed in chainmail and dry-suits, lugging around a fake Nessie hump, and being scolded by a septuagenarian folk legend in an extremely confined space."

When Moffat's tour of Scotland comes full circle – back to Glasgow, where he lives, and where it all began – he finds himself cornered as Stewart takes her last stand at the Barrowland Ballroom. The world-famous venue is a fitting locale for their crowning face-off: a symbol of social gatherings past; the best-loved rock stage in the world; and a recurring character in a film – and love story – with a sense of community at its heart.

"It was meeting the formidable Sheila Stewart that set the new course for the film; but we met some other brilliant folk along the way, ending up with what I hope is a fun film on legacy and tradition in Scotland today. And, for a film about death, it’s pretty funny.”

Aidan Moffat said of the film: “Originally, I wasn’t even supposed to be in the film all that much,

BBC Alba Brings A Celebration Of Irish Music from Celtic Connections

BBC Alba : 30 January : www.bbc.co.uk/alba

The world’s biggest winter music festival, Celtic Connections, comes to our screens as Cuirm@Celtic returns to BBC ALBA.

Opening the a four week run of the series is one of the biggest and most lauded events of the festival, as Irish legends The Chieftains took to the stage at Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall. The event, curated by the irrepressible Paddy Moloney, brought together a cast of outstanding performers, and the concert hall audience responded with three standing ovations. Moloney, renowned for bringing top acts together, brought together singers from Ireland, Scotland and North America to celebrate Ireland’s cultural impact and legacy over the last 100 years. Special guest was none other than country music legend Mr Kris Kristofferson, with a rendition of his classic hit For the

Eddi Reader

Good Times. Alongside the Chieftains trademark high-energy instrumentals and Gaelic vocals from Alyth McCormack, Moloney had assembled a troop of Irish dancers, the Glasgow Gaelic Choir, an allstar pipe band and a concert orchestra. Staged to mark the 100th anniversary of Easter Rising, the concert featured many other musical luminaries. A highlight was without doubt Dublin song sorcerer Declan O’Rourke’s incredible rendition of his song Children of ’16, beautifully accompanied by fiddler John Sheahan of the Dubliners, while Eddi Reader backed by full concert orchestra, had the audience in the palm of her hands.

Declan O’Rourke

The concert climax was something to behold, as The Chieftains’ skillfully orchestrated an extended finale, inviting ceilidh-style solos from each performer – including Kris Kristofferson’s heart melting

performance of Me and Bobby McGhee. Paddy Moloney of The Chieftains said “It’s great to be back at Celtic Connections here in Glasgow, in a very special year. We have a huge show - it’s not just the old Chieftains; we’ve got lots of guests. Kris Kristofferson, whom I’ve known since the seventies. We’re delighted to have Karan Casey and one of your great singers, Alyth McCormack.” Cuirm@Celtic has been produced for BBC ALBA by Bees Nees Media in association with TG4 and will broadcast on Saturday 30 January at 8.55pm. BBC ALBA is available on the following platforms: Sky 143, Freeview/You View 8 (Scotland only), Virgin Media 161, Freesat 110, BBC iPlayer. She then travels to Mexico and Cape Breton before returning to Scotland to take up her bow in the traditional music scene. In the background is her love story with her husband and musical collaborator Dave Francis, who teaches her to play her first tune by ear.
