The First Minister said: “Learning an instrument takes patience, perseverance and practise and being a band member needs teamwork, self-confidence and camaraderie. These are skills and core values that we encourage in schools; they help our young people to raise personal and shared attainment, and to reach their full potential in work and in life.” Organisers of The Scottish Schools Pipe Band Championships say they are delighted 17 schools have formed new bands since the outset of the competition, now in its fourth year. Championships convener David Johnston said: “We see this as proof of the great demand there is amongst young people to learn our traditional instruments. As they learn the music young people in bands also develop core life skills and friendships that will last them a lifetime.” The event takes place in Edinburgh's Broughton High School and will feature 85 individual performances by bands and quartets competing over eight categories. Mr Johnston said they were also delighted to see the growth of entries in the competition’s innovative freestyle class: “This sees schools moving away from traditional pipe band formats to play with other instrumentalists highlighting the versatility of the pipes and drums. Many bands taking part in the event face a gruelling day travelling to and from the event. Ullapool High School Pipe Band will be making an overnight trip to ensure they arrive in time. Gary Nimmo, Piping Instructor of Ullapool High School Pipe Band, said: I fully believe that there is a great benefit for our students to have interaction with other schools and to be able to see the level that they are playing at. This is why we are making an overnight trip to

King Kenny Honoured in Tribute Single from Glasgow's 'December' proceeds from the single will go to the Marina Dalglish Appeal

Glasgow band December will pay tribute to one of Scotland’s true football icons with their latest release. 'Kenneth Mathieson Dalglish' is out on 4 March, also the date of the sporting legend’s 65th birthday. The song is a charity recording and the proceeds from the single will go to the Marina Dalglish Appeal. December grew up together in the 1970s and 80s and have been fans of Dalglish since childhood. The song charts Kenny's career with Celtic and Liverpool FC and references his European Cup achievements with Liverpool and his goals for Scotland. The song also pays tribute to the 96 victims of the tragic events at Hillsborough. December guitarist Scott Pattison - “It is really impossible to properly put into words what Kenny Dalglish means to us. He transcends football. He’s not just the best player to ever play for Scotland and Liverpool; he was also (as Graeme Souness said) the best player in the world in his best days with Liverpool. He is the kind of person that songs should be written about. We wrote this about him because he is inspirational and also as our own thank you to him for the years of pure joy his playing brought to us – he made our lives better. He has all our respect and admiration.” Marina Dalglish said: "We are delighted that December has chosen to support the Marina Dalglish Appeal by donating all proceeds of their song. The Marina Dalglish Appeal was set-up 'to do something

to help' after Marina was successfully treated for Breast Cancer in 2003. The charity has one very simple aim - 'to make a difference' - and all money raised from the single will go directly towards improving cancer care for patients." 'Kenneth Mathieson Dalglish' is now available to download on iTunes and you can listen at https:// soundcloud.com/december-12/kenneth-mathiesondalglish and watch a video trailer at http://wi. st/1Q3D2lk The band will be donating the proceeds of the single to the Marina Dalglish Appeal and encourage additional donations to this great cause which has helped so many families. http:// marinadalglishappeal.org/. December’s forthcoming album ‘I Will Let You Have Your Say’ is out on 14 May.

Scary Biscuits Promotions presents .....

The Men From Leith: Dick Gaughan + Blue Rose Code + Dean Owens & the Whisky Hearts A night to celebrate the outstanding musical talents of three Men From Leith The Men From Leith, on 6 May in Edinburgh's Queen's Hall, is a night of celebration of the songwriting and musical talents of three men from Leith - outstanding musicians who all hail from the same small corner of Edinburgh. It promises to be a mix of original and traditional songwriting and compelling performances, with grit, fire, honesty and wry humour. DICK GAUGHAN is an international giant of compelling live performer. Scottish music – the only performer to hold the dual honours of a Lifetime Achievement award by BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and induction into the Scots Traditional Music Hall of Fame. He was brought up immersed in the musical traditions and culture of the Gaels, both Scots and Irish, which provide the foundation for everything he does. The Men From Leith is a rare live appearance for this Scottish legend. One of the five or six great voices of our time… John Peel How music from the gut really sounds… The Guardian In just a short few years, and two stellar albums, BLUE ROSE CODE (aka Ross Wilson), has gone from songwriting in the obscurity of an East London flat to being celebrated as a legacy artist, with beautifully bruised balladry amongst bolder brushstrokes of soul and jazz. His new album (his third) And Lo! The Bird is on the Wing – featuring a cameo voice over by Hollywood A-lister and Trainspotting star Ewan MacGregor - has been pulling 5 star reviews and is released 4 March 2016. He has a unique sound with comparisons drawn with Van Morrison’s Celtic soul and is a

A very important emerging singer songwriter… Bob Harris (BBC Radio 2) Imagine John Martyn meeting a young Van Morrison and being shipwrecked with a crate of Chet Baker records…. Time Out London

DEAN OWENS (Celtic Americana from Leith via Nashville) - is recognised as one of Scotland’s finest singer songwriters. The former Felsons front man filters his love of Americana through a gritty yet lyrical Scottish sensibility, armed with a searingly soulful voice and a neat line in memorable heart-twisting melodies. His recent Nashville-recorded Into the Sea album has received rave reviews and claims of “best yet”, appearing on several Best of 2015 lists, including at #5 in the Sunday Herald’s Top 50, with a number of live radio sessions including Bob Harris Country (BBC Radio 2). He was selected for a showcase spot at the recent Americana Music Association Awards in London. Dean’s Whisky Hearts band – a formidable lineup with former Silencers/Simple Minds drummer Jim McDermott, Brian McAlpine (keys and accordion), Amy Geddes (fiddle), Craig Ross

(elec gtr) and Mike McCann (bass guitar) – can rock up a storm, with flashes of folk and a touch of twang. One of Scotland’s best… Bob Harris (BBC Radio 2) Scotland’s most engaging and haunting singer-songwriter… Irvine Welsh The event was inspired by Owens’ classic song Man From Leith, and promises to be an unforgettable evening. As well as separate sets from each of these proud Leithers, there may also be some surprise collaborations. Thin Lizzy legend Eric Bell set to play Bathgate's 'Dreadnought Rock' venue Bathgate's Dreadnought Rock live music venue in the heart of West Lothian and handily for fans right on the revived Edinburgh to Glasgow railway through the town - is a bit of rock music history in its own right having been established in 1972, so what better venue could the founder of Thin Lizzy, Eric Bell, choose for his band's only Scottish gig on their new album 'Exile' promo tour on 5 March. Dreadnought's Alan Russell said: "It's an absolute pleasure not only to have another great band play at Dreadnoughtrock but to have an absolute legend play at Dreadnought Rock is something quite special indeed. As Scotland's longest running rock club we have always and continue to play Thin Lizzy tracks every week that young and old still enjoy listening and dancing to. Having the man who put that together many moons ago is an absolute pleasure and honour, where we will be able to see and hear a couple of classics along with his new material that is getting pretty good reviews of late." Alan continued: The chance for the people of West Lothian and the central belt of Scotland to also see, hear, talk to and no doubt have their photo taken in a very relaxed live music setting is a chance not to pass up and with a very modest ticket price is something not to let slip away!"

Two for the road on guitar’s international journey Internationally acclaimed guitarists GIORGIO SERCI and JONNY PHILLIPS bring their Guitar Journey Duet to Scotland for the first time in March.

format – it’s easily portable for one thing - and since the moment I heard Giorgio play I felt he would be the ideal partner. It just took us a while to organize time for us to work on it.”

Sardinia-born Serci, who has worked with orchestras including the Berlin Philharmonic and City of Birmingham Symphony as well as performers as diverse as Dr John and Shirley Bassey, met Phillips after a gig in South London in 2001 and after they struck up a conversation it became clear that they shared similar musical ideas, interests and enthusiasms.

“It’s really about communicating how we feel about the music rather than how much we know,” says Serci. “When I first heard Jonny play I was immediately struck by his ability to tell a story through his compositions. He also has a deep understanding of and respect for traditional music from different parts of the world and that comes across in his playing. It makes it fun for me to play with him and I hope a really enjoyable and entertaining experience for the audience when we play together.”

It wasn’t until 2015, however, that the two friends finally formed a musical partnership as Phillips became immersed in his group, the Latin American-influenced Oriole, and Serci kept busy as a player, composer, arranger, teacher, lecturer, and guitar magazine columnist. “For a long time I’d had this idea for a group that explores the history of the guitar from its origins in Spain and North Africa out across the Americas,” says Phillips, who regularly visits Spain and Portugal to play and soak up Iberian music. “Oriole does that to some degree but I like the two guitar

Although both players are serious students of the guitar and its influence around the world – Serci has a particular fascination for Brazilian and Cuban musical styles – they were keen to avoid a scholastic approach in presenting the music they put together to illustrate the guitar’s journey.

MAIREARAD AND ANNA :: 'Best Day' Tour tour dates - 14-29 April, more info @ www.mairearadandanna.com/tour/

After the stunning success of their November tour, two of Scotland’s most revered multiinstrumentalists, Mairearad Green and Anna Massie follow up their critically

acclaimed, third album, ‘Best Day’, with another tour!! This time, a 9-date UK Tour, in APRIL – taking in venues from London to Plockton and beyond!!!

‘Best Day’ was recorded at Gran’s House Studio in Lamington in the peaceful and picturesque Scottish Borders. Remaining true to their live sound, the album is performed entirely by Mairearad and Anna themselves. Their pairing combines Mairearad’s deft and lyrical accordion style, as well as her masterful piping, with Anna’s unparalleled versatility on guitar, fiddle and banjo. After over twelve years playing together, in the last few years, both have introduced songs to their live set, demonstrating the pair’s seemingly infinite abilities as musicians, but also the symbiotic synergy of performing together. ‘Best Day’ is the duo’s first album to include songs, and it will be available, for sale, on the tour!

(When I Try)’ by Dougie Maclean.

Nominated for Live Act of the Year at the Scots Trad Music Awards – alongside Lau, Breabach and The Outside Track Mairearad and Anna’s love of making music together evidently reflects in their performance. Leading world music and travel magazine Songlines proclaimed that “the camaraderie and sheer fun of musical Mairearad and Anna are renowned collaboration is plainly evident and for their formidable technical skill, infectious.”, whilst they have also alongside playful delivery and the sheer joy of making music together, garnered five-star reviews in “broadsheets” such as The which mirrors their cheerful album Scotsman, and a fan-base featuring title ‘Best Day’. The title comes KT Tunstall, who saw them by from one of the fiddle sets on the chance at Glasgow’s Celtic album including Aidan O’Rourkes Connections festival, and took to tune ‘Best Day of my Life’. Twitter to praise the duo; “You guys were killing it…amazing playing!” The album, as well as the tour, features many of Mairearad’s new compositions, Bottle Island, Julia & April Tour Dates Apr 15 - Downend Folk Club, London Simon’s and The Red Poppy Reel, Apr 20 - Plockton High School, and including, for the first time Plockton ever, a tune written together, ‘A Apr 21 - Eden Court Theatre, Lovely Bottle of Botanist’. Inverness Apr 23 - Finzean Hall, Banchory It would not be an Mairearad and Apr 26 - Perth Folk Club, Perth Anna album without a pipes and banjo set on three lively Reels, and on the perhaps more emotional end of the album scale, Anna sings a beautiful take on ‘She Loves Me,

Igor Stravinsky: The Rite of Spring Open Airs Album cd / download Release Date: Out Now

Album cd / download Release Date: Out Now

Down The Line is the new album from Glasgow-born singer/ songwriter Johny Corrigan. It is the much-anticipated follow-up to Johny’s acclaimed debut Inchfad Drive, released in 2013. The album consists entirely of self-penned songs and Johny has recruited an impressive line-up of artists for the recording.

This stunning reworking for jazz octet of Igor Stravinsky's masterwork retains all of the themes and most of the exquisite orchestration of the original composition. Improvisational sections appear organically out of Stravinsky's score, allowing band members to be featured as individual soloists as the piece unfolds. With personnel drawn from Scotland, England and Germany, this international group is a world-class ensemble, completely at ease with each other and this incredibly complex music.

Open Airs is a musical log book of travels in Norway, Ireland and Scotland. In 2011, Norwegian musician and composer Kyrre Slind quite his job, bought a banjo and hit the road on a Vespa 125 scooter, heading for Ireland. Four years later - rich in new experiences - he releases his first solo album, recorded in Scotland and Norway. The melodies describe landscapes, impressions and personalities encountered when travelling the great north and its islands.

Summerland are a hard-gigging band that are delighting ever larger live audiences with their songs of love and loss, longing and rejection. Sophie Armstrong, a shepherdess working in the wilds of Northumberland by day, has an extraordinary voice that soars, yet offers vulnerability and clarity too. At her side stands Gary Shearer, a guitarist of impressive ability whose musical tastes know no bounds. Together they’ve crafted a set list of original, heartfelt songs. This is music that is both contemporary and timeless.

David Altair releases his fourth album entitled ‘Movies’. This album is more beat driven than his last mainly instrumental albums. The album has an ambient and progressive feel to it drawing on inspiration from Boards of Canada. David has released the album for download on Bandcamp. The cover art is by James Abell with fonts by Douglas Mackay.
