member profile : Alastair Savage "The Scottish Music Centre's task is to champion the wealth of talent that abounds in Scotland's musical community"

Alastair Savage releases his long-awaited fourth album, 'Alone With History' on 23 May 2016. The LP signals his first completely unaccompanied fiddle recording with the first concert performances scheduled during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August this year. Captured in the magnificent setting of Crathie Kirk next to Balmoral Castle, featured highlights include Alastair's own Scenes from Gow in tribute to the lives of Niel and Nathaniel Gow, as well as Rabbie Burns. The music of James Scott Skinner is also included in recognition of Skinner's connection to Royal Deeside. A Scottish fiddle journey exploring the entrancing beauty of melody, ancient and modern. Alastair Savage performs 'Alone With History' during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe at the Arthur Conan Doyle Centre (Venue 290), 18, 19, 20 and 25 August 2016. Festival tickets @ https://tickets.edfringe.com/whats-on/alastair-savage-alone-with-history Alastair was born and raised in Ardrossan, on the Ayrshire coast. His early inspiration came at his Father's knee, where the sound of the accordian introduced Alastair to the traditional music of his homeland. He studied fiddle and guitar as a child, playing both traditional and classical music, before heading to Douglas Academy Music School in his mid teens to study classical violin more intensely. Alongside this, he was also the winner of The Land O'Burns Scots Fiddle Competition. He then went on to study at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and the Royal Academy of Music in London, before returning northwards to join the BBC Scottish Symhony Orchestra. Alastair always kept in touch with his trad roots whilst studying, playing regularly in ceilidh bands and other folk groups. Alastair is still a member of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, but also works regularly with other groups throughout the country, both as a chamber musician and as a traditional fiddle player. He was one of the principal players in the True North Orchestra for the 2010 Celtic Connections festival, and is also a familiar face to audiences of the Scottish Ensemble and chamber group Daniel's Beard. As a traditional player, he has broadcast on BBC Radio Scotland and BBC Radio 3 and as a composer, his music has been used by BBC Alba. Alastair and the band have 2 albums to their name already, featuring predominantly Alastair's music. Buy the album from 23 May @ www.birnamcdshop.com

THE MUSIC OF STEPS AHEAD

featuring MIKE MAINIERI

Presented by The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra directed by Tommy Smith

The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra (SNJO) leaps back to the future with visionary jazz pioneer and vibraphone master Mike Mainieri to play The Music of Steps Ahead. Music fans who are fascinated by the intersecting paths of rock, blues, funk, jazz and world music are invited on a unique journey into the creative mind of a quiet, modest and important musical iconoclast. Mainieri’s ground-breaking group Steps Ahead anticipated the enrichment of jazz forms through the assimilation of other genres by more than thirty years. They first made their mark as a must-see live band full of ferocious energy and boundless invention. Later, the ensemble took on the characteristics of an all-star collective that has at various times included Michael Brecker, Bob Berg, Bill Evans, Steve Gadd, Peter Erskine, Bendik Hofseth, Don Grolnick, Eddie Gomez and Mike Stern.

in rock music. He has lent his distinctive sound to the likes of Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell, Dire Straits and Laura Nyro, and he imbued their songs with sophisticated ideas that enhanced some of their finest recordings. Those qualities have circulated back into Mainieri’s collaborations and initiatives with others, and flowered with spectacular results on his American Diary albums and his Northern Lights project. He joins the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra for this special concert series to re-visit the music of Steps Ahead, and re-invent it in new arrangements (specially commissioned by the SNJO) from Christian Jacob, Geoffrey Keezer, Florian Ross and Christian Elsässer.

The first featured album will be C Duncan’s ‘Architect’. Music fans will also get their say with the 72-hour public vote which will run from 13th – 15th June. I felt very lucky of the most important dates in the Scottish musical calendar here in Paisley. The town already has close links with the award, having hosted and it’s nice to think that the music matters. Before, I didn’t really feel gigs by each of the four previous winners during the town's annual Spree that my music was good enough, or that I was the kind of person who would be able to do the things needed to get a record heard. We are delighted to be able to support the fifth year of the Awards and are looking forward to the 2016 ceremony hosted in Paisley Town Hall.” Sam Isles, Managing Director, TicketWeb: "We’re really excited to support the Scottish Album Of The Year Award in 2016. Last time the band was in the UK, they wowed a capacity crowd at the 1000-capacity Old Fruitmarket during Glasgow’s Celtic Connections festival. When they recently played the swankiest nightclub in Beverly Hills, where Hollywood’s A-list go to have themselves some fun, Tom Jones enjoyed the show much he offered some advice. Album - cd - Release Date: Out Now This CD is the culmination of a much earlier celebration, in music and song, of ‘The Wallace’ in 2005, by way of a commission from Alasdair Campbell who was then with The Tolbooth Music and Arts venue in Stirling. This was followed by another commission by Carolyn Paterson in 2014 to celebrate another icon of history of whom we know a good bit more than the former, Robert de Brus of Norman French stock, the 14th C warlord who became King, regaining Scotland’s place as an Independent nation. This orchestrated progression of music ranges from an arrangement of a classic traditional pibroch theme, in its most appropriate animated and rhythmic presentation, to specially composed and arranged pieces. Melodies are presented on a range of pipes in several different keys, overlaid and blended with percussion, clarsach, cello, soprano saxophone, violin, whistle and vocals. DAVID ALTAIR

Human Condition

Cold Weather Music

B-Sides

This is Doghouse Roses' guitarist Paul Tasker's first solo album. An all instrumental album peformed on fingerstyle guitar and clawhammer banjo with flute, flatpicked guitar, cello, pedal steel guitar and percussion. The 10 tracks are musical responses to both real life and imagined events and largely have a folk or old time Americana feel, but with 2 guitar duets adding a jazz tinge.

David Altair has just released his 6th album entitled ‘B-Sides’. This is some work that was previously never released and is quite rare. The album has quite a psychedelic feel to it especially ‘we can’t stop now (the Wall)’. The album flows into a journey of ambient sounds and experimentation.

Album cd Release Date: Out Now UP is a trio comprising guitar, double bass, drums and harmony vocals, based in East Lothian and Edinburgh. These are fine, experienced players, and the album (superbly engineered by Wayne Bell) gives a good crosssection of their eclectic live repertoire - early rock, jive, country, jazz, blues, traditional folk and skiffle pieces all come under a very broad umbrella - if it's fun they play it! Armed with swagger, a thumping singalong chorus and a fervent holler, the title track of the EP is the band at their rousing, anthemic best. Down The Line

Igor Stravinsky: The Rite of Spring Open Airs Album cd / download Release Date: Out Now

Album cd / download Release Date: Out Now

Down The Line is the new album from Glasgow-born singer/ songwriter Johny Corrigan. It is the much-anticipated follow-up to Johny’s acclaimed debut Inchfad Drive, released in 2013. The album consists entirely of self-penned songs and Johny has recruited an impressive line-up of artists for the recording.

This stunning reworking for jazz octet of Igor Stravinsky's masterwork retains all of the themes and most of the exquisite orchestration of the original composition. Improvisational sections appear organically out of Stravinsky's score, allowing band members to be featured as individual soloists as the piece unfolds. With personnel drawn from Scotland, England and Germany, this international group is a world-class ensemble, completely at ease with each other and this incredibly complex music.

Open Airs is a musical log book of travels in Norway, Ireland and Scotland. In 2011, Norwegian musician and composer Kyrre Slind quite his job, bought a banjo and hit the road on a Vespa 125 scooter, heading for Ireland. Four years later - rich in new experiences - he releases his first solo album, recorded in Scotland and Norway. The melodies describe landscapes, impressions and personalities encountered when travelling the great north and its islands.
