Edinburgh 'Sanctuary' night to help refugees in Calais Sanctuary is hosting a night of live music, poetry and unity to help raise vital funds for the refugees who are stuck in Calais. Musicians, spoken word artists and DJs have offered their time to deliver what is hoped to be the first of many community reactions to the current refugee crisis. The event will take place this Saturday 3 October at Studio 24 who have offered the venue and time of their staff for free. They will also be donating profits from the bar to the cause. Studio 24 is also the current drop off point for donations collected by CalAid Edinburgh. Working closely with the Edinburgh division of grassroots movement CalAid, Sonia and Amanda decided to launch Sanctuary - “We are proud to be taking action and are glad to see that others cannot stand idly by while witnessing such human suffering and take hope in the public response in our home-town and beyond.” Sonia said: "I was a child refugee in the 1970s from Chile and personally experienced the warmth from the Scottish people as they welcomed us here. I see the images of the families fleeing, of the drowned children, of the parent’s desperation - I cannot just sit and do nothing. Amanda and I decided take action and set up Sanctuary. All the artists are giving their time for free, and Studio 24 have offered their staff and venue for free. Just because the government refuses to respond does not mean that the Samba Sene : https://twitter.com/sambadiwan

people won't. They did for us in the 1970s and people are doing it again now.” Amanda added: "I am an ordinary Edinburgh mum, and am utterly ashamed by the way in which the UK government is treating people who desperately need help. Those are people, real people, small children, teenagers, mums, dads - ordinary people just like us. People who are escaping war, torture, and who have travelled thousands of miles to countries where many can't speak the language, all in the hope that someone will help. I think we all need to do our bit. Sonia and I set up Sanctuary as a fundraising event for refugees in Calais. Many inspiring people from all over Edinburgh have become involved and it we hope it is going to raise thousands, please join us.” Artists confirmed so far are: SAMBA SENE & DIWAN will get you all dancing with some Ska and Afrobeat music. DELIGHTED PEOPLES - this local band will be offering soulful sounds with a Scottish hip- hop twist- not to be missed. YOUTH AND THE YOUNG - folky, post-rock pop music from Edinburgh locals. MICHAEL PEDERSEN of NUE! REEKIE! those familiar with Neu! Reekie! will know what to expect; writer Pedersen is used to delivering a mix of music and poetry. BRAM - the 2015 Poetry Slam Champion hailing from Glasgow is a writer and performer. KATHERINE MCMAHON - performance poet and multiple slam-winner. TAM DEAN BURN - Leith born actor, raconteur extraordinaire, political wordsmith and member of The Bum Clocks will seamlessly weave the night together as our Sanctuary MC! Spinning sounds we will also be joined by RACHEL & CORNEILIUS (Rammed/ Bang Bang Club/Zoo Station). The night will kick off at 7.30pm until 3.00am. Canada's Ben Rogers arrives in Scotland for October tour One of Canada’s most popular singer-songwriters - Ben Rogers - arrives in the UK this month for a long-awaited string of tour dates to promote his brand new album, The Bloodred Yonder (Tonic Records). A powerful presence on stage, there is a careful balance of mystique, mischief and gentle kindness that emanates through all aspects of him. There’s a bright side to Ben as well; his sense of humour in writing and performance is as infectious as his songs. His self-produced debut, Lost Stories: Volume 1, was released in 2013 to critical acclaim. This year’s follow-up is sure to win him more attention. AmericanRootsUK predicted: "He could turn out to be one of the best singer-songwriters of a generation." R2 magazine said he produced “universal tales with all the authority of an Old Testament prophet.” Rogers is a folk artist and classic storyteller with a voice like smoke- damaged velvet, soaked in holler-distilled whiskey.

A “lived it” realness to his work, travel-worn acoustic guitar in hand and well-tramped boots stomping out a steady rhythm, he can hypnotise with his timeless tales of murder, betrayal, war, justice, love…and the human condition.

While here, he will be one of the main visiting attractions at the Musicport Festival in Whitby on 17 October. The tour kicks off in Nottingham and includes dates in London, Glasgow and

Having learnt from and worked with both Martin Simpson and Dick Gaughan over recent years, it’s evident in Ewan’s guitar playing and in his music more generally that he has absorbed and inherited a great deal, and at first hand, from the older generation of ‘folk greats’ before carving his own unique path. His latest album ‘Stories Still Untold’ was another milestone in this respect. More than ever this album cast Ewan in the role of storyteller, with each song pulling you in and spinning a new tale before giving way to the next – new songs and old songs, past and present, spanning several hundred years. Expect all of this and more in Ewan McLennan’s live performances. Delivered with a subtle yet powerful and earthy passion and a rare skill on the guitar, this troubadour will enthral audiences with folk music that is at the same time unique and timeless. Shattered Echoes

In Praha

‘Newly minted psychedelic’ band from Glasgow have their debut self-titled EP released on infamous student run record label Electric Honey. Brothers Kris and Pete have encapsulated all that is great about psychedelic, garage, rock and pop music into this record. A perfectly balanced EP.

Foxbeef: Powerful, melodic, hard rock with grunge sensibilities. Foxbeef released their début album Shattered Echoes on the 27 June, 2015. The drums were recorded at TPot Studios in Kinross with Robin Wynn Evans, whose credits include The Manic Street Preachers & The View. The band took on the responsibility to record and produce the rest of the album themselves, working as hard as they could over the course of a year to get the album to a place that reflected the bands personality and energy.

Paul Mellon (Guitars): This is our second single of our debut EP which we aim to release this autumn. In Praha is a song about 2 people falling in love in Prague. The main riff was inspired by Here Comes Your Man by Pixies and the solo is my own very poor imitation of / homage to Nels Cline's solo in Impossible Germany by Wilco. Some have called it catchy.

IAIN MORRISON

July Moon

Even Song

EAS

July Moon is the second studio album from singersongwriter Alistair Ogilvy - a strong collection of selfpenned material released on his own label and recorded at CHEM19 studios. Alistair was determined to push some genre boundaries while focusing on varying themes of love and loss, poetry and nostalgia. Louis Abbott from Admiral Fallow produced the album and it also features Karen Mathieson from Capercaillie on guest vocals. This new release is sure to gain him new admirers and open up exciting opportunities.

Electric guitarist, re-imagining jazz, folk, rock and choral music. Born in London, Steve Garrett has lived and traveled across the UK, Antartica, Canada and California, and now calls Scotland home. His music springs from a lifetime of influences from diverse sources and performances. Even Song include songs of loss, longing, inspiration by landscape, resolution and hope. The reflective mood mirrors the fading light at the end of the day. Composers range from the 16th Century through folk and the 1980s to contemporary European jazz, with some original compositions. Arrangements bring out the full resonance of the guitar, sometimes backed by loops recorded in real time.

It is never easy for a son to follow in the footsteps of a famous father, so Iain Jnr chose not to. He gave up the world of solo piping and went on his own musical journey. But what he was taught in his formative years is deep within him and this album is a definite attempt at some kind of filtering of the music of his hinterland. There is also a story present, sometimes a rocky one, of a father and son's relationship formed through a rich tradition and an art form that is deeply important to their culture and to both of them personally. There is a mixture of all these elements in this album and Iain Morrison is an artist who is following his own path, wherever that may take him.

Skyline are a Scottish band from Edinburgh looking to revolutionize the musical boundaries that lie in place today. We are searching for the balance between electronic music and live music to change musical opinions. We adopt melodic undertones to inflict emotion but will always embrace elements of contemporary music.

Glasgow sextet James Edwyn & The Borrowed Band were formed in 2013 and soon established a cult following that set up a ripple effect carrying their name far and wide. Their music is a mix of alt country and folky rock roots orientated Americana. They showcased at the 2014 Celtic Connections and realised they had enough material to start putting their debut album 'The Tower' together. Recorded in Scotland an additional session was recorded at Smecky studios in Prague where the strings for the track 'The Last Waltz' were played by the world renowned Prague Philharmonic Listen/Watch: Orchestra. Roddy Hart also guest vocals on the track.

RACHEL SERMANNI

DON'T SHOOT

Amateurs

Tied to the Moon

The Wonderkid

The debut album from Edinburgh’s orchestral noise-pop collective, 'Amateurs’ is a spectacular amalgamation of live and programmable instrumentation that creates an overwhelmingly powerful sound. “Pure, simplistic and beautiful” - Artrocker "It’s the kind of music that makes me want to type all day in an attempt to describe its beauty” - The 405 “Urvanovic have managed to create a sound that is both complex and enchanting” The Vinyl District

Tied To The Moon was conceived in an apartment above a pottery studio deep in the sticks of Nova Scotia where Rachel had four days of complete stillness with no means to communicate with the outside world - during silent afternoons of coffee and pistachios, Rachel would sit, in total solitude; writing; reading; playing music. In the space of these four days she unintentionally wrote six songs - four that would later become the core of Tied To The Moon: ‘Tractor’, ‘This Love’, ‘Banks Are Broken’ and ‘Old Lady's Lament’.

"This EP should come with a warning, one listen to this and you'll be hooked" - Michael Chapman Chordblossom. “For a band who are both relatively new and irritatingly young, it’s impressive this track (Panic) is very much the finished product. Catchy, welcoming and flawlessly presented, they’re ready for a big step forward.”- BBC Across The Line. Don't Shoot entered Glasgow's 'Soundwave Music Competition' and after storming through the heats, they played the final at Glasgow's O2 ABC on the 10th of January 2015 and were announced winners that very night.

"The EP captures Josephine’s quirky style beautifully; a refreshing debut that makes her stand out from the crowd, certainly in these Northern plains anyway. Her music has a direct approach with the lyrics taking centre stage, wrapped in her accomplished almost Ben Folds style with a nod to Regina Spektor (who she has stated as being an influence). Tracks like You (Are Not The Reason), is a crushingly simple yet charming address to a former flame. If she can continue to go from strength to strength she is capable of delivering greatness. Album : cd / download Release Date: Out Now

Album : cd / download Release Date: 1 May

Fragmentality is the eagerly-awaited debut album from Becci Wallace. The album showcases an artful blend of genres, blurring the boundaries between folk, pop, trip hop, jazz and blues. The album follows the journey of an escapist, yearning for beauty from the unknown, the untravelled, and inevitably the route back to where she started.

Eagerly awaited debut album, produced by the legendary John McSherry (At First Light, Lunasa, Tamalin) and Donal O’Connor (At First Light), it contains an eclectic mix of tunes and songs. There is a fine collection of musicians performing on the album including John McSherry, Donal O’Connor, Ross Martin (Daimh), David Foley (Rura) and Pauline Scanlon (Lumiere). Tunes from Ireland and Scotland (both traditional and contemporary), self-penned tunes, as well as songs and tunes that Susan collected on her travels in Sweden, can be expected.
