…says Rachel, from Stanford. I had told them to expect many emails from me that day, as I intended to keep all involved parties in the loop. There was too much going on to be able to micro-blog photos, so here they are in this blogpost. In the pre-email, we setup the schedule for the filming. (Ambitious, they tell me I was.) Monday, December 3rd, was the day we went to UC Santa Cruz, Stanford, and Berkeley to film. UC San Francisco grad students were all busy, and we wouldn’t have had time to fit in all 4 schools anyhow.

So, we’ve got all we need for now..

Probably, tomorrow, we will make the call to not visit UCSF… and reschedule for another time..

This means we might make it earlier to Berkeley…

There will be many email updates, so stay tuned.

Filming started about an hour later than anticipated. I was thinking of not being in the Kickstarter video, because I hardly had any sleep. With the spare hour in the morning, I printed out cue cards for people to read.

Here’s the update…

• i got 2 hrs of sleep.. lol
• we’re running a little late, but may still stay on schedule (I’ll let you all know)…
• it’s a beautiful day in santa cruz..
• i just made a bunch of cue cards on 8.5×11 sheets of papers (9 pages).
• i’m eating almond joys and kettle corn for breakfast
• you might be getting more emails than normal from me today.. 🙂

Don’t everyone worry, I am in the video. Apparently, the cue cards reflect in my glasses. I only learned today, that you should print things on blue paper when filming. There was a question of whether we’d go by the script or not. I, personally, don’t think it would’ve worked otherwise, but then again, what do I know?

I forgot to tell them that we had McDonalds for lunch, but if you are detective enough, you could learn that from the photos. Stanford, of all the schools, was the most apprehensive, but we ended up with 4 people who showed up to the shoot (compared to 3 at UCSC and 2 at Cal Berkeley).

OMG, that was amazing… Things are going unbelievably well.

12:00 – Oval at STANFORD, but might relocate
2:00 – Wrap up at STANFORD
3:15 – Sproul Plaza, BERKELEY

We are skipping UCSF….

Beyond cool, indeed. People, for sure, needed to warm up to the camera a bit, except Margaret, from Berkeley (she’s a natural). Some people would read verbatim; others tried to memorize and interpret. Apparently, the cameras pick up eye movement, so it’s better to have it memorized, or be able to wing things.

We got AMAZING Stanford footage.. thanks to derek, chris, Kimmy, and kassa…

They are doing b-roll now and we are headed to berkeley.

Things are on schedule. And amazing.

The script was co-written by a number of us; so, we’d all seen the content before. The speech inflections were to be expected. I was surprised that, regardless of the final edits on the script, people would still speak from their particular revision. While for others, I found myself wondering, “how did they manage that interpretation?”

Made it to Sproul plaza. Getting dim sum at food truck. Waiting for margaret to arrive and shooting b roll.

Berkeley has amazing food everywhere. If you know me, you’d be surprised if I didn’t post pictures of food. It was a beautiful day, right after a week of heavy rain. It only started to get dark after our last person from Berkeley.

We are done… its just getting dark now….

Margaret and marquise did great….

Ucsf and UCSD are gonna have to Skype into the video…

More on that later…

I gradually felt better as we finished with each person. In addition to PhD students from the three universities, we had filmed those who studied: computer science, bioinformatics, electrical engineering, physics, economics, and environmental engineering. The group, overall, except for being heavy in the sciences, is quite diverse.

Quick, someone think of a name to call this project..!

I’m pretty sure we will set our goal at $32,767 (nerd-LOL). It was mentioned that we could probably get $150,000. I mean, the sort production we are getting for the Kickstarter is as good as it gets. As far as project names go, there’s definitely the whole #blank-University or University-of-#blank. Derek suggested, “Academics and humanities: immersing student-oriented minds in novel environments… (only shorter).” I think we’re gonna use Academic Bridges, Africa 2013 (thanks Chris, Chris, Derek, and Kassa).

Auto-tune the whole thing, or just Derek’s part?

Things went incredibly well. The only thing left to do is to figure out how to get UCSD and UCSF in the video. MasterWerks (the media company) had suggested Skyping them in. I might take a trip to SF on Friday to catch some Med students. Gotta catch’em all!

Planning to launch Kickstarter on 12/12/12…. exciting!
