Sidevent Adkick Day 24: Get this Partridge Started!

Putting the 'advent' in adventure, for Sidekick's final post before Christmas, Jon and K have co-written an party-gathering poem. The form was inspired by RPG games and taken from our video games anthology Coin Opera II: Fulminare's Revenge. The subject matter? Well, I'll let the picture give you a hint.

Merry Christmas, everyone!

Party in a Pear Tree

I set out to find her. A red-legged trickster
afafed from a lone tree, then dropped down to join me.

A jaw and a jar at an inn on the highway:
the doubled-up queere-duke in blotched coat enlisted.

A troika of feathers, a hoisted foil.
Mes braves, you could do with my compétence.

While crossing the strait, a stowaway tom-boy
called at my quarters: I hear you’re recruiting?

The forger drummed her knuckle duster,
traced a pentagon, smiled, signed on.

We stopped at a hot spring; a fool on a lounger
mistook us for seraphs and followed behind us.

Ambushed by divers! A white-cloaked sherpa
was drifting by, shattered their arms. Lucky us.

I sold off my eight-track. The cowgirl who bought it
got hooked on my looks and came galloping after.

The Arn village seer, whipped into a frenzy,
went supernova and ran as we trailed her.

We bowled through a bandit camp. Chap with a peerage
jumped into the fray: I suggest we join forces!

Hired an elf archer, who mimicked the chickadee.
Drove me insane, but in the end saved me.

We found her, my heartbeat. We heard her sweet singing.
Yeah, we found her, my heartbeat. We heard her sweet singing,
and all of us lay down to watch the sun sinking.

Roll out (the barrel)!

Sidevent Adkick Day 19: We Wish You (Puny Humans) A Merry Christmas

Christmas is not only a time for fleshlings! It is a little known fact that robots too join in the festivities! With this in mind, we invited the fictional robot community to send a joint message of hope and joy, this yuletide.

Yule Log

Ho, ho, ho, Merry Christmas! Garbage for all the good little children!
There is an explanation for this, you know.

Well, we've come a long way, haven't we?
I’d give you advice, but you wouldn’t listen. No one ever does.
Can the maker repair what he makes?
Believe me, I'd prefer not to. I may be synthetic, but I'm not stupid.

Why do you cry?
You can shine no matter what you're made of
You're our best and only friend.
I wish we were more than mechanical beings and we were really alive
so we could share your feelings with you.

I suddenly feel the need... to strut my funky stuff.
Let's all watch as the world goes to the devil!
Many fragments. Some large, some small.
I was made ready.
It's great up here... no problems...
I wish I were a bird. Doctor, what am I?

I hope life on Earth is everything you remember it to be.
I am only a machine. So I can not be sorry or happy,
no matter what happens.
Now I know I've got a heart because it is breaking.

Sidevent Adkick Day 14: Dr F's Naughty and Nice lists

Dr Fulminare loves Christmas. No, really. Why, no sooner is it 1 December than he's trimming his ragged cloak with fur, tucking Bandijcat into his miniature Santa hat and skipping about, musing on how to stuff stockings. That or he's skulking in a corner, swearing about the Guild of Alchemists in a more festive tone than usual. What we mean is, he marks the season in his own way.

This year, much like Jack Skellington before him, the good doctor has decided to play Father Christmas, and to that effect, has composed his Naughty and Nice lists for all to view. Who has pleased him throughout the year and who has incurred his wrath?

THE NICES

The Arts Council of this Land

Where my own peers have singularly failed to recognise my genius, Arts Council England have most wisely responded to my threats generously funded my work this last twayear past. Thanks to their magnanimosity, I have been able to splice animals and cinema, enslave two poets to research the Surveyors' Riddles, learn much from the tyrants and politics of Hell Creek's dinosaurs and complete the final two volumes of my Birdbook magnum opus, capturing flighted ones from the mountains to the sea!

Inpress

This industrious crew are clearly mages of some kind. How else would they have the energy to promote and champion not only my glorious works but those of countless other small presses? I'll wager they've been at the Gnat's Fire. Either way, with work of swich quality I shall not eliminate them in a hurry!

Stockholm Review of Literature

Ah, yes. The Stockholm Review of Literature. My Scandinavian co-conspirators for this year's Alkemi Europoetry event! Translators, editors, poets and fablespinners, they are a cross-cultural force to be reckoned with! Mayhap they can also be convinced to smuggle me back some of that Swedish mercury...

Abi Palmer

A most promising scientist-poet, who co-runs the Shindig collective, and whose Alchemy game won Best Wildcard at this year's Saboteur awards, Palmer is also most dangerous. Posing sometimes in clown garb, she is able, like Lear's ingenious Fool, to conceal her magick intentions until the time is right. What intentions? World domination? A nation of Alchemy addicts? Whatever her endgame, I couldn't approve more.

SJ Fowler

SJ Fowler has, at less than 100 years old, achieved one of my life's goals: cloning himself. What else but Doppelgaengers could explain this poetry Puck's scamperings across the globe, across artforms, across languages? Whether he is reading in India, hosting bilingual nights in London, teaching, exhibiting or simply posing with bears (Life Goal #2, damn him), he is a force to be reckoned with. I would put him on the Naughty list through sheer bitterness, but he does MMA, and I have an old war wound.

THE NAUGHTYS

Death

I had been planning to visit experiments on the clearly extraterrestrial biped known as Bowie. I had also been planning to harvest Alan Rickman's voice. I had just finished a STELLAR proposal to the Alchemical Research Forum on the pheromones of Prince and mirth-giving properties of Victoria Wood. Typical of some mountebank like Death to come and swipe my dreams to the dust. Tenpence says the rogueish reaper is in the employ of a certain envious guild. Now the world shall never know the wonder of my Leonard Clone, the possibilities of the Wilder Gene Machine or the terror of MechaWogan.

The Pro-Leave Campaign

Do you have ANY idea of the import tax due on Swedish mercury? Not to mention Bandijcat's favourite Mausenbitzenkatzenfutter crunchies? You meddling fools!

Pokemon Go

Blasted zephyrs! Dratted daemons of light! Whither scoot they? Do they live inside the bleating box in my hand? Are they Will 'o' the Wisps, luring me to my doom? WHAT IS A CHARMANDER? I must harness their power or be rid of them!

Gah, I grow weary! I shall invoke Krampus to deal with those pocket monsters in the morning...

Sidevent Adkick Day 11: The (drag) Queen's Speech

At Christmas, it's time to sit down with our family and listen to the Queen. But as an Emmy-winning presenter once said, "We get to choose our families", and with that in mind, we're also choosing our own queen to deliver this year's speech.

In her own words, here's RuPaul:

All T

Hello hello hello ladies! The library is open.

I don’t want to hear any goddamn excuses.
Be prepared! Shake the dice and steal the rice.
Don’t be afraid to use all the colours
in the crayon box.

You have to use what you have to get what you want.
Anybody who can step out of the house
with a pair of heels
and some lipstick on their lips
is my hero. Yass Gawd.
You have earned the right to stomp and pummel
this particular piece of real estate.

You have overcome your inner saboteur.
(She done already done had herses.)
But don’t be fooled – all of this is cyclical.
I’ve seen the window open in my lifetime and I’ve seen it close.

Sissy that walk.
Shantay shantay shantay.
And don’t fuck it up.

It’s not the word itself, but the intention behind the word.
Anyone who says 'it’s an honor just to be nominated'
is one lying bitch.

My goal is to always come from a place of love
but sometimes
you just have to break it down for a motherfucker.

Make it work!
Make it work!
Fucking make it happen!
If you wanna be invited to the party, you must have something to bring.

All sins are forgiven once you start making a lot of money.
(You know, you said that last time)
I will not be ignored. I am here to stay.
Can I get an Amen in here?

Alright, I’m going to let you get back to work.
Oh, and one more thing.
You betta work.

Sidevent Adkick Day 7: You are no match for @AnimeCarson!

Just as Christmas is indeed a time for eating, it is a time for fighting too. If we were to send our champion into the arena, it would be mythmaking, genre-breaking Canadian poet Anne Carson. But how would this dextrous wordsmith fare in the sword-swiping, explosive world of anime? Could she smack-talk it with the best of them? Time to find out with our latest bot, @AnimeCarson!

Tuesday 6 December 2016

Sidevent Adkick Day 6: Catullus and Aquanauts poetry call!

For Day 6, we're trumpeting our ongoing call for submissions for two anthologies!  These are:

AQUANAUTS will focus on the submarine world, from just below the water's surface to the darkest depths and the strangest creatures (like this lovely anglerfish).

BAD KID CATULLUS will be a book of new translations, transformations and twists on and of the filthy satirical poems of Catullus.

Full guidelines can be found here, but in general:

• We will consider all kinds of poems, but we are particularly looking for calligrams, visual poems, concrete poems, and work which extends these genres: in essence, work which is immediately visually striking and typographically performative as well as readable. We are also favourably disposed toward poems that perform (and foreground) complex formal ‘feats’, such as palindromic or anagrammatical poems.

• Multiple submissions are encouraged. We are happy to consider work that has been previously published if it’s a good fit for the remit as described above.

• Ideally, each individual submission should fit comfortably on a single page. The page size for both titles is 124mm x 182mm. Submissions that use multiple pages to particular effect (eg. a poem in sections) will also be considered.

• Collaborations between poets and visual artists are welcome and encouraged, but we’re looking for words deployed artistically, or with visual elements, rather than illustrated poems.

• Submissions do not need to be typed or made using a word processor. We will consider pieces where the lettering is hand-drawn or painted, and we encourage experimentation with type using photo-editing software.

• We are planning to include a number of colour pages in each book, so submissions that use colour will definitely be considered.

• Please submit in the form of docs, docxs, pdfs, jpgs or pngs. If submitting jpgs or pngs please make sure the resolution is at least 300 dpi. If submitting docs or docxs, please make sure that all spacing is achieved using the space bar, rather than tabulation (this is so that we can easily transfer the work to another program without having to reconstruct it).

DEADLINE: 7th January 2017

Monday 5 December 2016

Sidevent Adkick Day 5: Introducing Edwhirl Learchester!

Brilliant burlesque meets sublime nonsense as another Twitterbot this way comes, in the form of Edwhirl Learchester!

A bizarre alliance between Edward Lear and the Earl of Rochester, this bot is out to lampoon by the light of the moon!

Restore that Pobble!
