A must read for everyone who thinks they are great at communication and who are not so. Important topic, juicy information with just right amount of personal examples.
The art of communication is such a vast topic. Dr. Neha succeeded to putting together the basics, the fundamentals to get you off to a great start. Even if it will be your first and last book on communications, it will forever change how you related to people, listen them, interpret your thoughts, etc.
Summaries and exercises at the end of each chapter are very important. It will be a good idea to read the book first and then go back Chapter by Chapter and do the exercises, write in the journal. I take this book as one of those that you have to study because it makes you to study yourself. And studying yourself is a life-long process, in my opinion. I have had several a-ha! moments.
I like the part when she speaks about emotions and how we try to separate them in our lives. It makes so much sense to be in tune with emotions and being able to process them in the right way.Society has to understand and accept the fact that we can't be whole and healthy if we don't let out emotions show because of social, religious, ethnic values. If we suppress them for too long, they lead to serious health issues.
I work in the corporate environment where there is still the stereotype of "leaving your emotions behind the office door" holds true. I hope things will start changing in the opposite direction soon. Love, LOVE, Love this book.

TalkRx: Five Steps to Honest Conversations That Create Connection, Health, and Happiness Hardcover – May 5, 2015
by
Neha Sangwan M.D.
(Author)
Do you say yes when you really mean no? Do you avoid conflict at all costs? Are you waiting for someone in your life to change in order to get what you want? If so, you’re not alone. Most people will do anything to avoid the unpleasant sensations that accompany having an honest exchange—even if it’s as simple as declining an invitation. But not speaking directly in the short term results in a much bigger problem long-term: hurt feelings and passive-aggressive patterns that stress us out, keep us up at night, and literally make us sick. You might be thinking, Communication? I know how to communicate. Don’t be fooled. Communication is simple, but it’s not always easy. Many of us learn from an early age to be guarded about what and how we share with others. Few of us know how to pay attention to our body, thoughts, emotions, and values in order to speak from the heart. In this book, Neha Sangwan, M.D., reveals practical yet profound communication tools that will strengthen your relationships, reduce your stress, improve your health, and even save you time. Having treated thousands of patients in one of the nation’s largest hospital systems, Doctor Neha discovered a theme: her patients’ inability to communicate often played an underlying role in their illness and how well they were able to recover. Once she understood this correlation, she was inspired to create the simple five-step process you’ll learn in this book. TalkRx will lead you step-by-step to listen to your body’s signals to better manage stress, create new outcomes with even the most challenging personalities in your life, articulate your frustration and disappointment effectively, talk to people instead of about them; make agreements that stick; and more.

I discovered Neha on the internet, her style resonated with me so I purchased her book. It’s not an easy read if you are truly trying to change for the better and is worth the time. What a difference learning to be curious has made. What a difference simply reframing questions has made. Really wish it was available on Kindle for highlighting passages and taking notes. Neha has more compassion than many of her contemporaries which is evident in her book. This should be required reading for anyone in Medicine or Management and translates to personal relationships as well.

Talk RX has changed my perspective on communication. Dr. Neha explores not only how we communicate with one another but also how our body, mind, and emotions are trying to to communicate with ourselves. Additionally, she explores how (at times) we just don’t listen to ourselves and thus cause enormous amounts of stress to our own ecosystem, which lead to health problems.
This book helped me realize that communication is more about observing and listening (the right way) then it is about speaking. The best part is that Dr. Neha has outlined practical tools to improve one’s communication rather than just speaking in theory. I have taken quite a few corporate communication training courses but the tools in Talk Rx surpass anything that I have ever been taught before. I have enjoyed reading Talk RX and it has helped me improve my communication and health, I only wish someone had given me this knowledge before.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking to improve their quality of life.

The author's basic concepts were easy to understand, and she gave multiple examples of how to apply her suggestions in different situations. Though she often used her own experiences as examples of how (and how not) to practice these ideas, it didn't come across as boastful. There were a lot of good suggestions on how to improve your communication. It's not just a communication book, though. It's also about paying attention to yourself. For example, what do you value and how might that affect your perception of the other person's actions? What physical reactions does your body have that will clue you into the fact you're upset or going to use a coping mechanism that isn't helpful? The book also contained links to online videos that gave further application examples and a downloadable journal that helps you to think out the points in each chapter. I've already applied some of the things she suggests (and I already knew others, like the 5 love languages).
My only problem with the book is that I still don't understand some of the questions you're supposed to ask yourself. She strongly feels that physically illness has an emotional link. So she asks a heart attack patient, for example, Why this illness? Why now? etc. For example, a heart attack patient might realize she was holding on to anger over a past wrong. I have a few chronic health problems, but can't figure out how to answer those questions. It wasn't clear to me if those questions only applied to certain types of illnesses or if I have a big blind spot when it comes to seeing the answers. Anyway, it does get you thinking. That's a good thing.

The Art of Medicine often involves de-stressing but a lot of stress comes from putting off important communications that are close to our heart and spirit maybe even soul. We also need to see where we are inventing stories thar may not be true and inquire within what our values are and be willing to stand and hold ourselves accountable for the fact that our values matter to us.
Also we can't always get what we want, and we can't control others but we can let them know the terms of discussion. Or if 1) your condo neighbor won't move her car and 2) you're late for the third time(there are scofflaws or folks who don't even know what laws they agreed to follow) and 3) you have warned him/her and cautioned sufficiently & you were heard, do call to have the car towed.

Dr Sangwan teaches us new skills to communicate with each other in a way that massively improves our health.I highly recommend.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 4, 2017
Doctor Sangwan makes a clear connection between the way we communicate to get our needs met and the effect of this on our health. She teaches how to set boundaries and say "No" and explains that the health consequences of not communicating in this way "literally makes us sick". She also explains how the body sends signals (emotions and symptoms) to guide us to communicate to ourselves and others in a way that allows us to reduce stress and maintain good health. The book is full of "aha" moments, the science is clear and the book provides examples to illustrate the points that Dr Sangwan makes. I would recommend this book to anyone who gets stressed about relationships with friends, family , partners, children , mothers-in-law etc and feels that this affects their health and wellbeing. She provides clear strategies to practise until you get confident in this new way to communicate. When you notice that your health improves at the same time this will spur you on to use these communication skills for the rest of your life.
