Tax tips 2011: Where to get forms & when to file them

First off, the federal filing deadline is again later than usual. Last year it was April 18. This year it's

April 17

. Oregon returns are due the same day. This is thanks

a holiday observed in the District of Columbia.

This might be the best news about your taxes that you receive this year.

Last year, you might recall, the Internal Revenue Service did not mail tax instructions and returns. The same holds true this year. It's a permanent cost-savings measure. If you're reading this, that's probably not a problem for you. But perhaps an elder you know could use some help getting their forms. They're not always easy to find.

Betty Charles, who doesn't own a computer, discovered Monday that the Lake Oswego Public Library has the forms she needs.

Oregon has mailed more than 100,000 paper forms to taxpayers who filed by mail last year, department spokesman Derrick Gasperini. If you filed electronically, you won't get Oregon forms in the mail.

Incidentally, the state has done away with its simple, abbreviated form; those filers will file

instead this year. "There is no 40S form this year," Gasperini said.
