These are the pods being built for the new coronavirus ward at Wigan Infirmary.

The ward will provide 52 new beds for patients.

And 28 of these will be critical care beds, tripling the hospital's capacity during the pandemic.

Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust said building for the modular units is 'progressing well'.

The ward is being constructed in the car park of the hospital.

In a Facebook post, the trust said: "The modular units for our COVID-19 contingency ward are on their way.

Construction is underway

"The build is progressing well and we have secured a main contractor, sub-contractor and supplier chain.

"At the moment everything is on schedule.

"However, should this change and if we require additional support and volunteers, we will post this out via our communications channels."

The decision to commission the ward was made on Thursday, March 19.

In a previous statement, Chris Knights, Project Director at Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust, said: “This has been an amazing effort by everyone concerned.

"We made the decision to commission this ward on Thursday, March 19, and we now have a construction team on site working flat out to deliver this ward as soon as possible.

“I cannot thank everyone concerned enough for everything they have done to support the NHS at this difficult time.”

Sites across the country are being transformed into temporary hospitals to help ease the strain on existing facilities due to the coronavirus outbreak.

London's ExCeL centre has been transformed into the Nightingale hospital.

The G-MEX in Manchester will also be turned into a field hospital for up to 1,000 patients.

It is set to open on April 12.
