The Most Exciting Chemistry Discoveries are Happening in Denver!

The theme Chemistry of Air, Space & Water will be thoroughly explored during the national meeting in Denver. Below are not-to-be-missed presentations covering the compelling and prominent sub-topic of Climate Change.

Climate change—a complex phenomenon involving physical, chemical, and biological processes affecting the atmosphere, land and fresh water surfaces, and the oceans—is encompassed by the Denver thematic program of Chemistry of Air, Space, and Water. The Kavli Lecture (Monday) by Dr. Susan Solomon on the Enduring challenges of ozone depletion and climate change will review the key scientific questions and critical research areas regarding the phenomena involved in ozone depletion. Allen Townsend will examine the role of nitrogen in climate dynamics during his Plenary Lecture, Nitrogen and the human endeavor (Sunday), which also serves as a keynote for the full-length symposium, Nitrogen and the Human Endeavor: Chemistry, Effects, and Solutions (Monday).

The Environmental Chemistry and Small Chemical Businesses Divisions enhance the thematic program with several in-depth symposia related to climate change. Atmospheric Aerosols: Chemistry, Clouds, and Climate (Tuesday – Thursday, ENVR) profiles atmospheric aerosols, their influence on cloud formation, and their interaction with solar and terrestrial radiation. Global Climate Change (Sunday, SCHB) brings together students, chemical professionals and climate experts from NOAA, NCAR, PMEL, and NSIDC to articulate causes and effects using climate modeling. If you are hungry for more climate change discussions, then join the early-morning session, Breakfast and Conversation with Climate Experts (Sunday, SCHB) designed to bring these groups together in an informal poster/breakfast session. And if you would like to know more about on-going public concerns, attend A Critical Look at Global Warming Data: An Examination of Driving Factors in the Wickedly Complex System Called Climate (Sunday, SCHB).

Celebrate chemistry at the final ACS national meeting held during the International Year of Chemistry. Register today!
Access the technical program and attendee information at www.acs.org/denver2011.

Celebrate IYC 2011 and Join Your International Colleagues at the ACS International Activities Committee Reception

Tell ACS how you will celebrate IYC. At the Denver national meeting we invite you to speak simply about how chemistry is improving our lives, relative to the 5 themes of IYC: water, materials, health, energy and the environment. Please stop by the Office of Public Affairs booth #1027 in the EXPO and we will be happy to videotape you. We think it will work best if you are prepared to give a statement that is approximately 30 seconds long, mentions how many students or members of the public you plan to reach, and is delivered in a confident, compelling, and lively manner. Contact Nancy McCormick-Pickett (n_mccormick-pickett@acs.org) to ask questions.

Take this opportunity to meet colleagues from around the globe and celebrate IYC 2011 during the International Activities Committee Reception on Sunday, August 28, 5:30-7:30 p.m., at the Hyatt Regency Denver, Centennial Ballroom D. RSVP now to join this complimentary event. We look forward to seeing you there!  For more information on ACS contributions to the International Year of Chemistry celebrations, please visit www.acs.org/iyc2011.

Help Shape ACS Strategy

One thing that the ACS National Meeting will make clear is that the global practice of chemistry is changing. Emerging trends like globalization, technological advances, and volatile economic forces are affecting the chemistry enterprise and its practitioners. ACS is now designing a new set of goals for this changing time. Your ideas are requested to help shape the ACS strategy, ensuring that the Society continues to serve you today and into the future.

Visit the ACS Network at communities.acs.org/groups/acs-strategic-plan and contribute your thoughts on the goal areas that should be a part of the ACS Strategic Plan for 2012 and Beyond.
