A few moments ago I've received the promised HDMI monitor (DP6) from
SmallHD, in perfect condition.

It also have RCA inputs, so I'll be able to test ML in SD resolution
too. And the best part is that it can use the 60D battery!

So far I've just attached it to 550D and browsed the menus a bit. The
signal is much worse than I thought; there are black bars even in VGA
mode. It would take quite a bit of work to understand how it works and
to fix it. I'd also like to try Trammell's 1080i code (chances of
success are very small, but at least I've started to understand how it
works and hopefully it will open other doors).

Help is welcome (at least to cover my expenses). The monitor was free,
but I had to pay some taxes (it was me who told SmallHD not to worry
about them). So if you'd like to help, please use this link:
http://goo.gl/t7CCS

Thanks in advance and stay tuned!

Can't believe the moment has arrived!! my beloved Smallhd DP6 will be soon join the ML thing. Yuppi Yuppi, thanks Alex again. I did a donation as I've never done it before. It isn't a huge help but I hope it will help anyway!! thanks again and finger crossed to see a proper ML on our DP6. take care

Thanks, I knew you will be the first one interested in this :)

Hopefully it will start working soon.

Great news. I know you'll have seen this, but just in case not, the DP6 has a special overscan mode to deal with the bars:

http://videos.smallhd.com/the-truth-about-canon-dslr-output-signals/

Also, just to register that a working ML in SD mode will be very useful here, along with the HDMI mode.

Big news: the new graphics engine for external displays is almost ready.

Screenshots (from Lucas Pfaff):
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/748408/ML/Foto%2030.10.11%2016%2028%2026.jpg
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/748408/ML/Foto%2030.10.11%2016%2029%2002.jpg

Working:
- zebra, focus peaking, false color, cropmarks, spotmeter,
histogram/waveform in all HDMI and SD modes
- magic zoom in HDMI-VGA mode

Not working yet (work in progress):
- live defish and ghost image
- screen layout still has some problems
- screen layout in 500D and 50D may not be right (but easy to fix)
- menu flickers in HDMI VGA mode (needs double buffering)

Very difficult to fix (and not a priority):
- magic zoom and RGB tools (rgb zebra, rgb histogram, auto WB) on SD
monitors (image format is not yuv422).
- magic zoom in HDMI 1080i (not enough CPU power; is it really needed?)

Only tested on 550D and very little on 60D (as far as I know, they are
identical on HDMI). I expect 600D to be similar.

Technical: inside it has two homogeneous transformations, one between
BMP overlay and LiveView image and another between LV image and
recording (HD) buffer. This means proper math, not hacks :)

Not related to HDMI, but to audio meters. Here's a message from one
user, regarding http://bit.ly/ml-oct27 version:
"""
Hi Alex,

just finished testing the new audio peak levels. A -12dB tone recorded
with my 60D (only the tip of the meters was yellow) resulted in a
perfect -12dB tone. I checked all signals on our calibrated system.
Really nice work!
[...]
"""

So it seems you can now rely on ML audio meters :)

If you find it helpful, please help me continue ML development by

Enjoy!

Second round of HDMI fixes:

- Custom screen layouts (16:9, 16:10, 3:2). Select them from menu (they are not changed automatically).
- Ghost image almost working. You may have to create the overlay without the monitor attached.
- A few redraw fixes.

Is there any interest in fixing the remaining (non-essential) issues? (live defish, menu flicker, ghost image creation)

This version is not recommended for 500D/50D (screen layout may not be correct).

Alex, you are a star. I had the previous one and everything worked correctly, the only thing would be the ghost image that in my case it is very useful. I'll try this one here tomorrow mornign and let you know. My god What a progress!!! Thanks again

I have a question Alex.
A couple of years ago Trammel gave us hope by releasing this: http://magiclantern.wikia.com/wiki/Relocation
He claimed he can get 1080i on the 5d while recording.
Of course this was never in any version since he said there was some flashing issue on the monitor.

Since now ML is a lot more mature and you can turn off almost everything to reduce CPU usage, you think there is a possibility you can add this as an optional item?
I wouldn't mind some weird screen artifacts every now and then (as long as it's not recorded) only to get sharper view out of my 550D (for focusing of course).

Thanks

It's here, but so far nobody was interested:
http://magiclantern.wikia.com/wiki/Unified/Vote_for_Features#Full_HD_output_when_recording

I've tried to switch the camera to full HDMI with current method of changing HDMI resolution (force HDMI-VGA); it works in standby, but not while recording.

Also Magic Zoom doesn't work on 1080i due to lack of CPU power (you can see the image freezing).

These are the reasons why I'm reluctant to try. The programming effort is significant and the chances of success are very small.

Technical: my current hypothesis is that there are two "tasks" reading data from sensor. One fills the LV buffer (triple-buffered, used for display) and another fills the HD buffer (double-buffered, used for recording). I don't think one buffer is created by resizing the other (because either one can be larger than the other, or they may have different formats; HD is always YUV422).

Hi ALex, This is the best ever for HDMI. The very last thing; the image ghost works perfectly I like the transparency the fact that you can move it and everything on it. the only thing is when you make a comparison from the image that you took from play mode and the one from the LV they differ, the ghost image it is bigger or actually wider, so it wont match on allignments. If that fixable I'll be very happy but if not That's ok it is no usable 100 per cent.
thanks again for the amazing and huge amount of work you put into it

If you first create the ghost image without the HDMI monitor attached, it matches well (works both for photos and videos).

With the monitor attached it only matches for photos.

Hey Alex,

Had an ultra quick play with Nov 1 on 600d and dp6 last night, very
tidy, the flash shortcut bug is back, is it worth a video of the
600d's performace with the monitor?

Yes, a video with the external monitor will be very helpful.

For the flash shortcut... I have no idea what's causing it, so I think
I'll disable it on 600D.

Some more HDMI fixes:

- fixed possible crash in HDMI-VGA mode
- double-buffered graphics for menu => 0% flicker :)
- new screen layout for HDMI-VGA, with meters and bottom bar just under the 16:9 area
- 600D uses DISP button instead of flash
- fixed shutter count display (it was almost double than real value)
- a few minor redraw tweaks

Warning: the new graphics engine is not yet mature, there may be stability problems. I did not test this codebase in real-world usage yet.

May not work well on 4:3 cameras (50D and 500D).

I tried as you said to ghost image with the monitor off and put it back on and it works perfect, but is there any way can be done from the monitor itself? thanks again for the amazing work

I know this is about HDMI fixes, but I have tried this on an SD monitor via the USB output too on my 550d.  Focus peaking works great, the various screen layouts work, and generally, it's very usable.

There are two issues to report.

One, the small font used for info at the bottom when in the 4:3 layout mode is too small on SD, but I guess this is unavoidable.  In fact, it looks like some pixels are skipped, which must mean that you don't get the full resolution of the LCD over USB.  My SD monitor is 840x480 native, and I believe the 550d's LCD is 720x480 native.  Composite should support 480p easily in theory, so perhaps the SD output isn't that great.

Two, the top and bottom of the screen are cut off.  This is especially visible on the ML menu:

http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-HY0jD075mZc/TrKwg3khM4I/AAAAAAAACgE/hnuL0FaS39I/s800/2011-11-03%25252015.06.52.jpg

Thanks for all the work.

Actually the title says "HDMI and SD", so it's fine. The only things that don't work on SD are magic zoom and RGB tools, because the image buffer has a different format (it's no longer YUV422).

So... today's ("historic") changes:
- made the menu a bit smaller on SD monitors (let me know if it fits on yours; my monitor does not crop anything in SD mode)
- fixed some more redraw issues
- 600D DISP button enabled in photo mode too
- ran stress tests for several hours. So far, the only stability problem I've been able to find is on HDMI with aggressive power saving (turning off sensor in LiveView).

As with other versions from this thread, it's only recommended for 550D, 60D and 600D, since these 3 share the same screen layout.

Some more feedback.  I don't know if any of this is fixable, or worth fixing.  Everyone serious has an HDMI monitor, but I'm too cheap!

The menu is still a tiny bit cropped, although less so (not an issue for me):

http://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-pp8BCElZXMY/TrMerp_yXsI/AAAAAAAACgY/CpzAalZb10o/s800/2011-11-03%25252023.04.34.jpg

There is vertically uneven letterboxing depending on what you're doing.

In live view the image is not centred vertically, but slightly low of centre.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-f18O6Zuu1_g/TrMfN_FNqII/AAAAAAAACgo/wbj_pWAYnfM/s800/2011-11-03%25252023.06.18.jpg

In playback mode, the black space is at the top.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-a7QXVsFLefo/TrMfdA8XKoI/AAAAAAAACgw/RHP-RFF74tg/s800/2011-11-03%25252023.09.05.jpg

Very minor, but when not in live view, the extreme left column or two of pixels is missing:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-QperyruClS0/TrMgV2IcIBI/AAAAAAAACg8/8Vp5cEcqVpk/s800/2011-11-03%25252023.12.50.jpg

Turns out my monitor is in 16:9 mode and is stretching the width of the image to fit the 16:9 screen.  If I switch to 4:3 mode, the image is no longer squashed, but obviously there is pillarboxing.

Do you think it might be possible to have the 16:9 video image fill the 16:9 screen?  If the camera is outputting a 4:3 image as I suspect, it seems this would mean vertically centering and stretching the image and putting the screen in 16:9 mode.

Some more small fixes (mostly flicker fixes in menu), and a new feature: no more clutter in the menu :)

Advanced options are only available if you read the help text ;)

Warning: It's known to cause problems on 500D and 50D. When those two will be fixed, I'll return to the main thread :)

Hi Alex, i havent try this version yet, but something that give some problem is the fact that the white focus square box takes a while to disappear especially when not centered, sometime it leave some part of itself stuck on the screen that goes away if you refresh with the half shutter. And sometime I see a strange white box left over inside the red circle that indicate the standby mode, not alWays but often nothing major anyway.
Thanks again

Ok got it...you wanted to scare us right :) Anyway you've already addressed what I was asking in my last post...you're a genius!!! Any way we can make that menu to our own use? As you did from easy to advance but choosing our own easy one to get rid of whatever we never use?

Great addition the easy menu, but i didn't find the help txt so I searched in the code how to enable the advanced mode. Really cool and quick, good idea.

I've posted some issue on the tracker, I'll re test them with this build as soon as my batteries are charged.

Sorry Alex something else I noticed is that when you set the white balance by Kelvin there is a lot of flickering, a bit annoying but works anyway so fine for me, just wanted to let you know about it. While you change the kelvin parameters they flick a lot.Take care

What other settings do you have?
I have no flicker from movie mode or LiveView, changing kelvin from ML menu or DISP shortcut.
Instead using Q for auto K, ISO, shutter or G/M in ML menu don't works good.
There is no LiveView image like before, the menu stay black.
And the value are not changed anymore, if pressed again the value change only once each press.

ML is a fantastic thing for me.
Maybe not something I read. But I have two questions.
Dear Alex my director likes monitor Liliput. And I like the LCD on
the camera. Is the LCD of the camera and Liliput can work together?
The second question. Zebra. Difficult for me are the values zebra.
In my old camera had a 70% or 100%. This solution is better for me.
Thank you for all the work.

There is no way to have LCD and HDMI monitors at the same time.

You could daisychain two hdmi monitors, not a cheap solution however.
