Welcome to SHRED BOOTCAMP! I'll be your Drill Instructor! And I do mean DRILL! As in a large power tool used in slasher films and Paul Gilbert concerts. Here is were you EARN THE LIVING DEATH out of your fingers and break through any speed bumps/barriers to become a MASTER CHIEF of Shred!

Here is the DIRECT LINK to your own BOOTCAMP!

http://bitly.com/yashsbootcamp

MISSON #1

THE MISSION

1.)Your mission is to go all the way back to the very start. The base of the mountain.

LESSON 1. http://bitly.com/gmclesson1

Which you will play SLOWWWWWWLLY, very SLOWWWLLLLYYYY until you master it at a crawl (As You'll Do With Each Mission, and focus on left hand FORM! Make it SUPER PERFECT!). Speed it up bit by bit until you feel your ready to take it to WAR (Any speed, it's up to you) Shoot a video and post it as a reply to this post. I'll then offer a constructive and brutally honest critique.

THE AFTERMATH

Upon nailing the crap out of lesson one at a speed you didn't think possible, and playing it a clean as a freshly waxed floor, you will be given your first insignia of Rank in BOOTCAMP!

Practice!
Todd

Hey Todd,
What should be the angle of attack? Mine is not perfectly 90 degrees. I have the pick slightly tilted when I am picking.
Is this OK or does it have to be perfectly 90 degrees ?

Problem spotted Sargent - I sometimes go faster than the metronome, even at 180 bpm.

It should be comfortable above all else. It's tough to use exact degree determinations sometimes as it's more of a "Feel" thing. But please take a pic or video of your picking hand and let me see what's going on and I'd be happy to help soldier!

Always try to follow the metronome. That's sorta the whole point of playing to one Soldier! If you rush the metronome, you'll likely end up rushing the drummer in a band. Being able to lock in to the metronome groove is important and why we practice with them smile.gif Keep at it!

The links are fixed smile.gif Woohoo! The speed is up to you. I'll be able to tell by watching your vid if you are slacking on speed or i you are pushing it beyond your current ability, so just try to push it up to a comfy but brisk pace.

5 years too late. But, I've already improved a lot. Let's run through the stuff really really quickly. 200 bpm eighth notes alt picking, two notes. I'll get the video in 15-30 mins after this post.

Here we go. So, I've been wanting to tackle this for a long long time, but, the metronome with the boring clicks really gets me off my timing. I know I can play stuff, but it throws me off, I have no idea why. I can easily go quarter notes if the metronome is going quarter notes too, but, eighth notes, I get confused. Then, if I put like, a drum track or something behind me, I easily get it done right. So, basically, what I am saying is, I apparently can't, or don't know how to work with a basic metronome.

Here's the job done, 200 bpm, eighth notes

Hope it works. What's the next job?

Hey Todd.

Thanks for the compliment. It's my Jackson King V Pro, made in Indonesia in 2013-2014. I've had it since November 2014.

It has a neck-through construction, alder body wings, maple neck, ebony fingerboard. A Jackson "Speed" neck which is like 0.775" at 3rd fret and 0.835" at the 12th, could be thinner but it's nice and thin. It also has a compound fingerboard radius, 12"-16". And the neck is like, satin finish or no finish, kinda bare wood. And it's 3 piece.

Electronics wise, the pickups are EMG 81 in the bridge and 89 in the neck, and the 89 can be split into a single coil mode when you pull out the volume knob. It of course has a selector switch and a tone knob.

The bridge is a Floyd Rose 1000 series double locking trem, which uses the same components as the German version but is made in Korea.

I think that's about it. I'll make a thread in the Gear Forum where I'll tell more about it and my E-II Arrow 7 string, which is the black one.

The Arrow 7 is also mostly the same construction, Alder body wings, 3 piece maple neckthru, ebony fingerboard, but it's a 7 string and it's an E-II, so made in Japan, the neck is wider, a bit chunkier, the fingerboard radius is 12", it has an Original Floyd Rose, and EMG 57-7 and 66-7 pickups, and just a volume knob. As an added bonus, it has Gotoh locking tuners and a reverse headstock, which looks really rad. Pics coming soon smile.gif

Well fought Soldier!! And WELCOME BACK TO THE FIGHT!!! We have missed you the FoxHole of Shreddery
that is the BOOTCAMP!! Great to see you digging in! Let's debrief!!

MEDALS OF HONOR

*MUTE: Solid Palm Muting here. I'd suggest maybe pulling the guitar up a pinch so that your hand can cover
the entire bridge even if your not muting. It's handy for quick on / off mutes!

*STRIKES: Very clean picking strikes and good alternate picking. Looks like you have been spending time in the woodshed!!

*AGGRESSION: Points for sheer, outright Aggression. I appreciate an aggressive style!

These first few Missions are just to get your fet wet and get you accustomed to the process. You will tear through them like a hot knife through butter!

In other words you just killed it and ..

LEVELED UP!!!

Next up is MISSION 2!! Then 3 and so forth. Here is the link to the Master Thread!

As for the Metronome, it just takes some getting used to. You can set it to 8th notes and just play one note for each noise the metronome makes. Make sense?

Here's the job done, 200 bpm, eighth notes

Here it is. 180 bpm and 200 bpm

The finish was weird on this one. And a bit of sloppiness.

It gets a little difficult on the super high frets but it's fun.

Bonus - Here's a fail outtake. I kinda lost my way when I had to come down, it was clean though. haha

So, what do you think? smile.gif

And he's off to the races!!! Good stuff. You have the appropriate level of SHEER AGRESSION to be sure. Let's debrief!.

MEDALS OF HONOR
*TIMING: I can hear the metronome and I can tell you are trying to maintain synch with it. Keep that up. Being able to play "in time" is as important as playing "in key"!

*ALT PICKING: Good Alternate Picking here as well! Some folks down pick this, which is fine, but I do prefer seeing it alt picked. It's good prep for what's to come.

*MUTE: You will hear me say this a LOT, "MUTING IS IMPORTANT!". Good news is you mute quite well and there isn't any errant string noise.

Also, I can hear your guitar and I can hear the metronome at the same time. This is a good thing. Just being able to record yourself with both levels matched is a very important step. In addition, I can see both of your hands!! This too is a very important part of producing these vids and it takes some folks a few tries to get all the details down. You've got it in the first couple of lessons so you are in good shape!! In other words you just..

LEVELED UP!!!!

Welcome back to the fight Soldier!!!!! This drill is supposed to be about Alternate Picking, but you have plenty of Missions ahead to get in to that. I"m glad to see you finding your stride and not rushing / lagging the lick. That's progress!!!! Let's Debrief.

MEDALS OF HONOR
*PICKING TECHNIQUE: You did this one as all down strokes and that's fine for now. More Alternate picking ahead!! Solid picking technique.

*MUTING: As you know, Without a solid palm mute, all is lost. Your palm mute is spot on and no string noise is escaping. NICE!!!

*SYNCH: You had some synch issues but you worked through them. hand synch and being able to alternate pick while keeping synch takes time and practice and you are ready to dive in!!!

In other words you just.....
LEVELED UP!!!!
