TV ratings: Heston Blumenthal serves up 3.2m viewers for Channel 4

Big Chef Takes on Little Chef, the opening salvo in Channel 4's second Great British Food Fight season, delivered an average audience of 3.2 million viewers at 9pm last night, Monday January 19.

The show, in which chef Heston Blumenthal tries to turn around the fortunes of roadside chain Little Chef achieved an average share of 13% over the hour, wedged between two episodes of Celebrity Big Brother, according to unofficial overnights. An extra 318,000 people tuned in to Big Chef Takes on Little Chef on digital catch-up Channel 4 +1 an hour later.

Celebrity Big Brother: Live Eviction attracted 1.7 million viewers and a 7% share from 8pm to 9pm on Channel 4, and continued with 3.3 million and 17% for a second instalment from 10pm to 10.50pm. The audience on Channel 4 +1 was 513,000 for the first episode at 9pm and 130,000 at 11pm.

Big Chef beat Million Dollar Traders on BBC2 and Warzone on Channel Five. Million Dollar Traders, part of BBC2's City season, pulled in 1.2 million viewers and a 5% share in the hour from 9pm, and Warzone drew 700,000 and 3% in the same time slot.

The second episode of ITV's three-part drama Unforgiven won the 9pm hour with 5.5 million viewers and a 23% share, beating the second and final episode of Hunter on BBC1. Crime drama Hunter, a follow-up to 2007's Five Days, shed 700,000 viewers compared with Sunday night's opener to deliver 4.7 million viewers and a 19% share.

Also at 9pm, the new series of 24 on Sky1 delivered an average of 474,000 viewers for a double bill until 10.50pm.

Coronation Street delivered 10.2 million viewers and a 43% share for ITV1 from 7.30pm to 8pm, then a further 9 million and 36% from 8.30pm to 9pm.

In the half-hour gap from 8pm to 8.30pm, ITV screened a Tonight episode on fighting repossession, which pulled in 3.8 million viewers and a 15% share up against EastEnders on BBC1.

EastEnders attracted9.1 million viewers and a 36% share at 8pm for BBC1, followed by a Panorama episode on the challenges facing incoming US president Barack Obama with 2.7 million and 11% from 8.30pm to 9pm.

On BBC2, University Challenge at 8pm and MasterChef at 8.30pm both drew audiences of 3.2 million, a 13% share.

Earlier in the evening, ITV1's Emmerdale attracted 7.6 million viewers and a 35% share in the half hour from 7pm.

Liverpool Capital of Culture - a Year in the Life picked up 600,000 viewers and a 3% share for BBC2 in the hour from 7pm, while Channel 4 News drew 900,000 and 4%. An extra 17,000 watched Channel 4 News on Channel 4 +1 at 8pm.

On BBC1, The One Show at 7pm had 5.2 million viewers and a 24% share, followed by consumer show Watchdog, with 4.7 million and 20% in the half hour from 7.30pm.

In a quiet night for Five, the channel's audience did not lift above 1 million after Neighbours and Home and Away at 5.30pm and 6pm respectively.
